This paper proposes a method to estimate the posture of an athlete moving on a vast field in a sporting event using a pan-tilt-zoom camera. In order to estimate the posture of an athlete on a sports field from a dynamic video sequence, our method extracts image features to search correspondence points among successive frames and computes the homography transformation matrix that compensates for changes the camera parameters (e.g., angle of view and posture). The effectiveness of this method is qualitatively verified using MLB TV broadcast video. The accuracy and error factors are also quantitatively verified by CG simulation. Several types of multirotor unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are widely used in various industrial activities. UAVs with electric ducted fans (EDFs) have been developed to mitigate the risks associated with rotary blades, which are installed on the exterior structure of conventional UAVs and exposed to the ambient environment. Particularly, vertical EDFs have become a focus in the field of UAV design because they require less space for the flow channel compared with horizontal EDFs. In this study, a vertical EDF UAV model was developed. Structural and flow field analysis was performed in Ansys software to determine the optimal design configuration. The results confirmed that the designed model facilitated smooth air flow with favorable inlet and outlet velocity. The vehicle structure required minor adjustment to reduce the frequency of occurrence of vortices. Overall, this study made two research contributions. First, an EDF UAV model was developed to mitigate the risk of rotary blades being exposed to the ambient environment. Second, a vertical EDF system was proposed to reduce the flow channel space and maintain the outlet velocity, thereby improving the takeoff, landing, and thrust performance of UAVs. © 2023 Institute of Physics Publishing. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are widely applied in various industries and fields. Because they use a variety of rotor types, from single rotors to multi-rotors, UAVs offer a wide array of functions. However, continuously rotating rotors can be dangerous if they accidentally encounter foreign objects or bare hands. Therefore, non-rotor UAVs are the focus of discussion and modification in the present study. Non-rotor UAVs do not contain visible rotor mechanical components. Compared with the development of popularized multirotor UAVs, that of non-rotor UAVs is challenging in terms of structure and flight control. To address this challenge, wind tunnel structure models were developed in this study for different levels of aerodynamic force, and computer-aided engineering was used to conduct structural and flow field analyses to determine the key elements that reinforce non-rotor UAV structures. The research results revealed that the thickness and fillet design at the joint of the non-rotor UAV aerodynamic wind tunnel system were crucial factors influencing the system's performance. Motor rotors can be embedded inside support structures to reduce airflow turbulence in the wind tunnel. © 2021 Institute of Physics Publishing. All rights reserved.

Impellers are extensively employed across various industrial sectors and in different industrial systems, such as ducted-fan modules. The configuration of ducted-fan modules can be optimized to achieve high impeller performance, safe and stable operation, and high operational efficiency. This study designed two ducted-fan modules with axial impellers composed of airfoil cascades by using the Fan Calculator software program to analyze their performance and efficiency. The study discovered that the module efficiency varied with the internal impeller diameter, external impeller diameter, and rotational speed. An increase in the outlet angle of the blade tip caused increases in the power generated by, pressure change produced in, and flow rate of the modules, thereby enhancing fan efficiency and module performance. The study makes two contributions. First, it constructed two ducted-fan modules with axial impellers by using the duct to isolate the blades, thus increasing the safety and stability of the fan. Second, it explored the performance and efficiency of impellers with airfoil cascades to enhance fan efficiency and optimize the design of a ducted-fan module. © 2024 SPIE.

Multi-rotor unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have become common in recent years, but non-rotor UAVs are still relatively rare. This study used an aerodynamic model to replace the multi-rotor design concept and examine load bearing capabilities, specifically for delivery of medical goods by non-rotor UAV. We use static structural simulations for static analysis and fatigue analysis to investigate the capabilities of different structural materials. The simulation results combined fatigue strength verifications, structural safety factor calculations, and finite element analyses to calculate parameters like total deformation, stress ratios, and strain magnitudes to analyze structural fatigue life. The analyses indicated that the factors of safety and fatigue lifetimes of two structural materials far exceeded standard values. They can be used to optimize designs that prevent plastic deformation and breakage. Time and money are saved in the research and development process by carrying out these calculations and static analyses of physical properties before prototypes are actually built. © The Authors, published by EDP Sciences, 2017.

Industry 4.0 has recently become an ubiquitous topic of study both by academics and practitioners. Beyond the technology application domain, one major issue that most organizations have to face when structuring their efforts towards Industry 4.0 is the identification of viable opportunities for the deployment of Industry 4.0-related technologies. Proof of concept projects are usually developed to address this, as they are an exploratory means to quickly assess the application of a given technology to a specific context. If results are positive, these projects may grow into larger projects that will be used to deploy the considered technologies in a wider scale. This work aims to propose a framework that helps facilitate the assessment of proof of concept projects and their transition into wider scale projects. This framework is based both in the existing literature on Industry 4.0 technologies and in case studies of proof of concept projects that were used to assess such technologies. The framework is composed of three main components: the technologies being evaluated, the design objectives that they meet and the outcomes that are expected. The relationships among these components is also considered, and a process that mediates their use is proposed. © 2018 Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE). All rights reserved.

For an organization to develop a sustainable position in today's competitive and volatile market, efforts in increasing its maturity of Industry 4.0 thinking and implementation need to be performed. Inside the context of Industry 4.0, the Internet of Things (IoT) and Big Data/Analytics are concepts that are receiving an increased attention of both academics and industry practitioners. However, their implementation is challenging and requires a high level of competences, both in skilled labor and financial resources related to technology selection and implementation. There is a diversity of scenarios in which those two concepts can be applied, especially in large manufacturing enterprises, where large amounts of data are generated, and need to be interpreted, helping managers make better decisions. Hence, it is necessary to organize and better structure projects that conceive, manage, develop and implement IoT and Big Data/Analytics technologies. The objective of this study is to develop a case study presenting the architecture of a small IoT and Big Data/Analytics project in an automotive company. Results suggest that to promote such projects in a larger scale, organizations need to greatly enhance their infrastructure to develop the necessary integration between IoT components and Big Data/Analytics tools.

The manufacturing strategy design process is crucial for an organization's competitiveness because of its role in bridging the gap between strategy and operations. The dynamic and ever-changing nature of today's businesses makes this a difficult task, extremely influenced by internal and external factors. There is a need for a method that can provide the manufacturing function new attributes for its strategy development as a dynamic model that operates in a complex environment. This work addresses this concern by analyzing a well-established framework for manufacturing strategy design composed of six parts and based on a process approach. The analysis is carried out by considering the alignment of the aims of each of the parts of this framework to a set of enterprise engineering guidelines, that determine how well-structured the process from this framework is. Guidelines verify process formalization, process organizational structure, process synchronization, explicit considerations of performance expectations, exception handling, and incorporation of change and improvement mechanisms. The study reveals that there are some gaps in the process regarding the guidelines and further, suggests improvements in it to fill these gaps. The paper develops new aims to the analyzed manufacturing strategy design framework and shows its relevance to the process. This represents advancement to operations management by proposing a reviewed view of the manufacturing strategy design process through an enterprise engineering perspective. Moreover, it presents a process that can contribute to organizations that intend to develop a customized model, adapted to its reality that conciliates external and internal visions, the dynamics of its environment, and the consideration of quanti-qualitatively activities that recognizes all involved stakeholders.

Manganese-boron steels are widely used in hot stamping, resulting in 1500 MPa (PHS 1500) or even 2000 MPa (PHS 2000) tensile strength after the hot stamping process. These steels are most commonly used in industry in the form of AlSi-coated sheets. However, recent developments are being made to enable the application of uncoated steels, resulting in cost reduction, but bringing technological challenges to be overcome. The coefficient of friction (µ) is a fundamental parameter in sheet metal forming and is influenced by several factors, such as: surface roughness, working temperature, lubrication, contact pressure and sliding speed. In hot stamping, it is known that the temperature can have a great influence on µ values for coated plates, but there is little information about uncoated steels. This work aims to investigate the tribological behavior of uncoated PHS 2000 steel plates using the pin-on-disk test. Tests were carried out under three temperatures (800 °C, 600 °C and 400 °C) and contact pressures of 5 and 10 MPa. Results showed that the friction coefficient tends to reduce with increasing temperature at a pressure of 5 MPa, as result of oxide formation on the steel’s surface. However, at a pressure of 10 MPa, this reduction was not observed. © 2024, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

This paper presents an integrated damper and pressure reset (IDPR) method for variable air volume (VAV) system fan control. The IDPR method controls the static pressure at a minimum required level while maintaining at least one terminal box damper at full open position. When the entire system is flawless, the fan speed is controlled in a way similar to the terminal regulated air volume (TRAV) method to maintain at least one terminal box damper full open. When system faults exist, however, this control strategy uses less fan power than the TRAV method. The IDPR method can be implemented in both full DDC (direct digital control) systems and hybrid systems, where only the space temperature readings are communicated to the DDC controller at the air-handler level and the terminal boxes are controlled by pneumatic controllers. ©2004 ASHRAE.
