Organizational models of production systems that focus on services and servitization are experiencing an increase in an application. These models emphasize the value proposition for the customer and a better understanding of the value creation process. Additionally, the emergence of new technologies such as those associated with Industry 4.0 also requires well-structured and results-oriented processes. In this perspective, although there are several tools for measuring both operations and organizational performance, the literature still lacks tools that integrate and align these two perspectives, accounting for activities at the operational level that reflect objectives at the strategic level, and vice-versa. Therefore, a procedure for aligning process performance (operations' performance) and strategic performance (organizational performance) in a service context is proposed. This procedure is based on three main components identified through a literature review: (1) guidelines associated with enterprise engineering that focus on processes, developed by Deschamps (2013);(2) a set of critical success factors for implementation of performance measurement systems that focus on organizational performance, developed by Keathley (2016);and (3) ten determinants of service quality, proposed by Parasuraman (1985). The alignment procedure is presented as being mediated by Parasuraman's model, relating enterprise engineering guidelines and critical success factors. © 2018 Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE). The gravitational search algorithm (GSA) is a stochastic population-based metaheuristic inspired by the interaction of masses via Newtonian gravity law. In this paper, we propose a modified GSA (MGSA) based on logarithm and Gaussian signals for enhancing the performance of standard GSA. To evaluate the performance of the proposed MGSA, well-known benchmark functions in the literature are optimized using the proposed MGSA, and provides comparisons with the standard GSA.

The intake air control system of a gasoline engine is a typical nonlinear system, and included among the adverse fac-tors that always induce poor idle-speed control stability are dead time and disturbances in the intake air control process. In this paper, to improve the responsiveness when idling with regard to disturbances, a mean-value engine model (MVEM) with dead time was constructed as the control object, and the two servo structures of sliding mode control (SMC) were studied for better idle control performance, especially in transient process of speed change. The simulation results confirmed that under the constraint condition of control input, the robustness of idle speed control that is being subjected to torque disturbances and noise disturbances can be greatly improved by use of the servo structure II.

The motivating principle of the BESTEAMS (Building engineering Student Team Effectiveness and Management systems) project is to create a modular student team training program that can be integrated into any existing engineering undergraduate curriculum. Funded by a three-year NSF-Course, Curriculum, Laboratory Improvement (CCLI) grant, the BESTEAMS curriculum is comprehensive and developmental, offering three levels of instruction (introductory, intermediate, advanced) in three key areas of team functioning (personal awareness, interpersonal dynamics, and project management). The purpose of this paper is to describe the results of student evaluation of the introductory level curriculum that has been introduced into the Clark School of engineering's - Introduction to engineering Design course (ENES 100). Students completed three team work modules presented by faculty trained in the module delivery during the 2001-2002 academic year. The first Introductory module related to personal effectiveness and increasing self awareness. Using the widely recognized Kolb Learning Style Inventory (LSI), the module shows students how knowing their own preferred learning style can give them insight into themselves as well as their teammates' view of educational and team tasks (N = 379 students). The second Introductory module (interpersonal dynamics) addressed basic communication issues including giving and receiving feedback, typical stages of team development, and brainstorming activities (N = 125 students). The final module on project management, covered personal time management in the context of team projects and included project definition, scoping and the creation of Gantt charts (N = 144 students).

In this paper, the results of a study on microstructural influences on cyclic strain response, deformation and fracture behavior of an alloy steel is presented Cyclic strain resistance exhibited a linear trend for the variation of both elastic strain amplitude with reversals-to-failure, and plastic strain amplitude with reversals-to-failure. Fracture morphology was observed to be the same at the macroscopic level over the entire range of cyclic strain amplitudes examined. However, at the fine microscopic level this alloy steel revealed fracture to be mixed-mode with features reminiscent of "locally" ductile and brittle failure mechanisms. The mechanisms governing strain response at the fine microscopic level, resultant fatigue life, and final fracture behavior are presented and discussed in light of the mutually interactive influences of intrinsic microstructural effects, deformation characteristics of the microstructural constituents during fully-reversed strain cycling, magnitude of cyclic strain amplitude, and resultant fatigue life.

The success of organizations operating in complex environments depends on how well its supply chain could adapt to disruptions caused by unanticipated events. Building this resilience requires the capability to identify risks and uncertainties and modeling the impact of them on operations. Both of these have proven to be very difficult to do effectively. With the emerging interest in promoting sustainability companies are now forced to not only consider factors that affect economic performance but also those relating to environmental and societal responsibilities. Thus, increasing resilience in sustainable supply chains (SSCs) calls for a more holistic approach to address risk;it is necessary to consider the risks originating within and outside the company and those affecting all supply chain partners;also, the risks due to and impacting all stakeholder groups must be incorporated. This paper presents a comprehensive review of risks in SSCs and a potential approach to model their impact. © 2010 IEEE.

Solar tracking systems which can track the Sun movement can increase the power generation rate by maximizing the surface area of the solar panels that are exposed to the sunlight. By utilizing a solar tracker, the number of solar panels needed to generate the same amount of electrical energy will be significantly lower. In general, solar tracking systems are classified as single-axis solar tracking systems and dual-axis solar tracking systems. Several researchers had conducted both simulation and experimental work to compare and evaluate the performance of solar tracking systems against static solar panels systems, as well as between different solar tracking system mechanisms. General agreements among the researchers are that the performance of solar tracking systems is always exceeding that of static solar panels. Some researchers also conducted studies on how the weather conditions affect the performance of solar panels, and they concluded that the systems with tracking mechanisms are more resilient toward a variation of weather conditions. © 2021 Institute of Physics Publishing. Water hyacinth has become widespread in freshwater bodies in several countries, leading to various issues, particularly its substantial water consumption and the resulting need to control its growth. Among the different methods of controlling water hyacinth, mechanical control stands out as the most effective and environmentally friendly approach. A proposed harvester robot has been developed, capable of efficiently cutting and collecting water hyacinth from the water's surface. The robot boasts several advantages, including its ability to operate in narrow water paths and lakes, use clean energy sources to preserve the water ecology, employ a GPS module for safety and error detection, and generate maps for evaluating work and predicting annual growth. When compared to other technologies dealing with water hyacinth, this innovative water hyacinth harvesting robot presents a significantly lower cost of 0.01 /kg, making it an optimal solution for addressing water hyacinth problems. © 2023 IEEE.

Particle swarm optimization (PSO) is a population-based swarm intelligence algorithm driven by the simulation of a social psychological metaphor instead of the survival of the fittest individual. Based on the swarm intelligence theory, this paper discusses the use of PSO approaches using an operator and based on the Gaussian probability distribution function as a population space of a cultural algorithm, called cultural Gaussian PSO (GPSO-CA). Cultural algorithms are mechanisms that incorporate domain knowledge obtained during the evolutionary process, which increase the efficiency of the search process. These approaches are employed in a well-studied continuous optimization problem of mechanical engineering design. © 2006 IEEE.
