The long-term reliability of surface mount (SM) interconnections remains an important issue in many electronics packaging technologies. Strain-reliefs with sufficient compliance can minimize the cyclic loads impressed on SM solder connections during operational temperature excursions, appreciably increasing the margin for long-term attachment reliability. Compliance evaluation was performed for an inter-board strain-relief, or bond-strap, in a commercial Low-Noise Amplifier (LNA) used in various AT&T wireless transmission systems. The bond-strap compliance was optimized, within practical forming and assembly constraints, to provide robust SM interconnection during the expected product service life.

We describe the reconstruction of a gene regulatory network involved with the Toll-like Receptor signaling pathways. By applying our recent identification algorithm to a time series gene expression dataset, we identify regulatory interactions between genes and construct discrete-time piecewise affine regulatory functions. Our validation shows that our model predicts the expression levels of the genes involved in the network with good accuracy.

Traditional modeling for sound propagation in porous media has been done knowing the macroscopic physical parameters intrinsic to the material. Using Bayesian model-based analysis the uncertainties of these parameters and their effect on the accuracy of the selected model can be studied. The Horoshenkov Model [Horoshenkov, et al., JASA vol 139 (2016)], or similarly Miki Model [Miki, JASJ, vol 11, pp.25-28 (1990)], can be used to estimate the mean pore size and porosity of the material under test from measurements of surface impedance or absorption coefficient using glass beads of known diameter and layer thickness as an experimental model. The accuracy of these models can be compared using quantitative measures such as mean, variance and the interdependence of the estimated parameters. This paper discusses the error and likelihood of several models using the experimentally measured data sets. © INTER-NOISE 2019 MADRID - 48th International Congress and Exhibition on Noise Control engineering. With the adoption of the damage tolerance design principle, the health monitoring system has become an integral part of the operation of engineering structures. For the system to work, a damage indicator that describes the structural integrity level should be established and monitored. The damage indicator is usually derived from structural responses. Many quantities have been proposed for damage indicator including natural frequency, mode shape, curvature, strain energy, and t-, F-, and z-statistics. In this paper, we propose a new damage indicator in the time and frequency domains derived from the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory. We evaluate the method by using data obtained from a numerical simulation of a cracked beam. The beam deformation is nonlinear due to the contact between the crack faces during vibration. The proposed damage index is estimated in the domains for various observation points on the beam. Besides, the existence of the crack is also predicted by the widely used traditional method based on the change of the natural frequency and mode shape. A comparison is made between the present method and the existing ones. We conclude the present proposal is more sensitive to detect the crack.

Energy Dissipation of Ship Structures subjected to Impact Loading: A Study Case in Side Collision

The main goal of the present paper is to study the energy dissipation characteristic as the influence of parameters in the event of ship collisions. The review is conducted on accident case between Roll on-Roll off (Ro-Ro) Marisa Nusantara with Reefer Qi Hang at Sunda Strait, Indonesia May 3rd, 2014, as reference. It was later modeled and analyzed by nonlinear simulations finite element (FE) method was presented to be used as a reference to get the verified model. This collaboration study is considered as a good reference because it used real accident damage to compare the numerical results. The result in collision energy from the virtual simulation was later verified with the calculation result of the empirical formula. In the extended study, the collision region and material model are selected as influenced parameters to design collision scenarios. The characteristic of collision energy from these scenarios will be discussed. In the same section, the damage pattern is observed and reviewed to find the relation between several parameters to calculation results. It was shown that the influence of region and location of target points contributed significantly to energy dissipation. In contrast, the key finding in material properties is that when Young’s modulus between materials was the same and the difference of yield strength of materials was not significant, then other material properties contributed to the result.

This research paper examined the connectedness of STEM faculty to others both within and across academic departments who might be potential resources for diffusion of Learner-centered practices, and the impact of participants' social networks on their Learner-centered beliefs and practices. The research question under investigation was: To what extent is the degree of social connectedness among faculty within and among STEM departments related to the degree of implementation of Learner-centered practices? Participants were recruited from Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics departments, and from departments in the College of engineering. The sample began with 21 randomly-selected faculty from each department engaged in the STEM instruction of first and second year engineering students. The second level consisted of the colleagues identified by the first level as people they utilize as resources for improving their instruction. The connectedness of faculty in the network was examined using network analysis, focusing on both number of connections, and depth of connections. Attitude and Observation Protocol measures were used as outcomes. Results show that faculty classified as Learner-Centered had deeper and more extensive social networks. Results are discussed in terms of the need for intra- and inter-departmental faculty professional development experiences that both introduce and encourage faculty to trial new tools and techniques, but that also run for the longterm, supporting collaborative organizations of faculty working together to transform early engineering experiences. © American Society for engineering Education, 2016.

In an attempt to increase the accuracy in modelling nonlinear systems, a wide variety of mathematical models were developed, such as the Volterra series, Wiener models, bilinear models, Hammerstein-Wiener models, among others. Recently, artificial neural networks (ANNs) have generated considerable interest as alternative nonlinear system identification technique and regression tool. Unlike other models, ANNs are easy to adapt and to apply to different engineering problems. One example is the B-spline neural network (BSNN), which consists in a variation of the basis function artificial neural network, which is usually trained by gradient-based methods. However, gradient-based methods have the characteristic of frequently fall into local minimum during learning procedures. To overcome this problem found in conventional learning methods, Harmony Search (HS), a stochastic metaheuristic approach, can be adopted. This optimization technique was originally conceptualized using musical improvisation process of searching for a perfect state of harmony, and can be considered to adjust the control parameters of BSNNs. In the same way, this paper proposes uses a Chaotic Harmony Search (CHS) approach, based on Chaotic Logistic Map, to train BSNNs to reproduce the dynamic of a nonlinear yo-yo system. Numerical results indicate that the proposed CHS approach is effective in building a reasonable BSNN model for nonlinear identification.

The coupling and possible nonequilibrium between magnons and other energy carriers have been used to explain several recently discovered thermally driven spin transport and energy conversion phenomena. Here, we report experiments in which local nonequilibrium between magnons and phonons in a single crystalline bulk magnetic insulator, Y3Fe5O12, has been created optically within a focused laser spot and probed directly via micro-Brillouin light scattering. Through analyzing the deviation in the magnon number density from the local equilibrium value, we obtain the diffusion length of thermal magnons. By explicitly establishing and observing local nonequilibrium between magnons and phonons, our studies represent an important step toward a quantitative understanding of various spin-heat coupling phenomena.
