The reliability-redundancy allocation problem can be approached as a mixed-integer programming problem. It has been solved by using optimization techniques such as dynamic programming, integer programming, and mixed-integer non linear programming. On the other hand, a broad class of meta heuristics has been developed for reliability-redundancy optimization. Recently, a new meta-heuristics called firefly algorithm (FA) algorithm has emerged. The FA is a stochastic metaheuristic approach based on the idealized behavior of the flashing characteristics of fireflies. In FA, the flashing light can be formulated in such a way that it is associated with the objective function to be optimized, which makes it possible to formulate the firefly algorithm. This paper introduces a modified FA approach combined with chaotic sequences (FAC) applied to reliability-redundancy optimization. In this context, an example of mixed integer programming in reliability-redundancy design of an overspeed protection system for a gas turbine is evaluated. In this application domain, FAC was found to outperform the previously best-known solutions available.

Among the existing meta-heuristic optimization algorithms, a well-known branch is the differential evolution (DE). DE is a powerful population-based algorithm of evolutionary computation field designed for solving global optimization problems which only has a few control parameters. With an eye to improve the performance of DE, in this paper, a DE approach combined with a cultural algorithm technique based on normative knowledge (NDE) is investigated to estimate the heat transfer coefficient during freezing treatment by inverse analysis. Numerical results for inverse heat transfer problem demonstrate the applicability and efficiency of the NDE algorithm. In this application, NDE approach outperforms a classical DE approach in terms of quality of solution.

Optimization of cut-off values for diagnostic parameters in determining stenosis severity depends on coupling functional (hemodynamic) and anatomical data. In this study, we sought to investigate the functional diagnostic parameter (CDP;the ratio of trans-stenotic pressure drop to distal dynamic pressure) by correlating with FFR (ratio of distal to proximal pressure of a stenotic section) and CFR (ratio of hyperemic blood flow velocity to that of resting condition). A 0.014-inch dual sensor (pressure and Doppler velocity) guidewire was used in 9 patients to obtain pressure drop and velocity at hyperemia. Functional index CDP was assessed from measured hyperemic pressure drop and velocity. CDP correlated linearly and significantly with FFR and CFR. Indicating that, measurements of CDP can provide a better assessment of stenosis severity. Copyright © 2011 by ASME.

We describe the reconstruction of a gene regulatory network involved with the Toll-like Receptor signaling pathways. By applying our recent identification algorithm to a time series gene expression dataset, we identify regulatory interactions between genes and construct discrete-time piecewise affine regulatory functions. Our validation shows that our model predicts the expression levels of the genes involved in the network with good accuracy.

As cyber-physical systems become more prevalent, specifications for these systems must be formulated in a more nuanced manner. This paper presents a particular instantiation of such specification by proposing a framework that endows robotic motions with a sense of aesthetic style. Drawing inspiration from classical ballet, poses are cast as discrete states and movements as the transitions between these states. Thus, a given movement style is encoded in the availability of transitions at each state, and the dynamics of a complex physical trajectory are abstracted as a system which moves between these states. Using Linear Temporal Logic (LTL), we are able to further constrain the set of possible sequences through the transition system and thus prevent it from evolving through a sequence of states that is physically impossible or aesthetically undesirable. Our overarching objective is to facilitate subtle degrees of control over systems as such subtleties are required, more and more, to interact in a social and aesthetically driven world.

We report on how to increase transmittance of a 0.2 mm thick polycarbonate (PC) film by periodic subwavelength anti-reflection structures in the visible spectral range. Subwavelength anti-reflection structures like moth-eyes are fabricated into the polycarbonate substrate itself by thermal nanoimprinting lithography (TH-NIL), which uses silicon stamps that have periodic structures such as gratings (lines and spaces) and pillared dots, and are fabricated by laser interference lithography (LIL) and transformer coupled plasma etching. To increase transmittance of a polycarbonate film, we control the periods and shapes of patterns, the number of patterned surfaces, and the overlapping direction of patterns that are fabricated into its surfaces. As a result of this, we show that average transmittance improves as the pattern period gets shorter and as both surfaces of the film are patterned. We also show that the spectrum range gets larger as the pattern period gets shorter and is determined by the longer pattern period in the case of designing a film to have different pattern period on its surfaces. The maximum average transmittance of a polycarbonate film increases up to approximately 6% compared to a bare sample in the 470-800 nm spectral range. Achieving high performance optimization algorithms for embedded applications can be very challenging, particularly when several requirements such as high accuracy computations, short elapsed time, area cost, low power consumption and portability must be accomplished. This paper proposes a hardware implementation of the Particle Swarm Optimization algorithm with passive congregation (HPPSOpc), which was developed using several floating-point arithmetic libraries. The passive congregation is a biological behavior which allows the swarm to preserve its integrity, balancing between global and local search. The HPPSOpc architecture was implemented on a Virtex5 FPGA device and validated using two multimodal benchmark problems. Synthesis, simulation and execution time results demonstrates that the passive congregation approach is a low cost solution for solving embedded optimization problems with a high performance.

SUGV(Small Unmanned Ground Vehicle) used for human rescue and military operation is need to overcome the environment that tough terrains such as a hole or high obstacles. As far as the survival of the vehicle and the preserving ability of the information in the vehicle are concerned, it is essential to have an approach for recognizing unattainable driving states. However, despite the fact that the study of obstacle avoidance and stabilization of SUGV is focused on, it is hardly found out ways of classifying unattainable driving states with the sensors mounted on the SUGV unit. In order to overcome the problem, this paper proposes a practical way for classifying SUGV Failure State(SFS) with the meaningful parameters by statistical method, response surface methodology(RSM).

Synthesis of musical instruments or human voice is a time consuming process which requires theoretical and experimental knowledge about the synthesis engine. Commonly, performers need to deal with synthesizer interfaces and a process of trial and error for creating musical sounds similar to a target sound. This drawback can be overcome by adjusting automatically the synthesizer parameters using optimization algorithms. In this paper a hybrid particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm is proposed to solve the frequency modulation (FM) matching synthesis problem. The proposed algorithm takes advantage of a shuffle process for exchanging information between particles and applies the selective passive congregation and the opposition-based learning approaches to preserve swarm diversity. Both approaches for injecting diversity are based on simple operators, preserving the easy implementation philosophy of the particle swarm optimization. The proposed hybrid particle swarm optimization algorithm was validated for a three-nested FM synthesizer, which represents a 6-dimensional multimodal optimization problem with strong epistasis. Simulation results revealed that the proposed algorithm presented promising results in terms of quality of solutions.

Invasive guide wire methods to assess functional severity of coronary stenosis are affected by dynamic variables like heart rate (HR), contractility, epicardial stenosis (AS) and blood pressure. The interdependence of these factors is also influenced by the presence of concomitant microvascular disease (CMVD). The purpose of this study is to assess the variation in contractility under varying HR and AS in the presence of CMVD. In vivo experiments were performed on seven Yorkshire pigs. It was found that, in the presence of concomitant microvascular disease (CMVD), for lower AS (120 bpm. However, for higher AS (>50%), contractility decreases for both HR120 bpm.
