Identification of multiple notches in an aluminium plate was investigated with the aid of probability-based imaging evaluation of Lamb wave signals activated and captured by a piezoelectric sensor network. A signal processing algorithm featuring signal synchronization and correlation is proposed to facilitate the extraction of damage-scattered waves, by the means of which the corresponding arrival times of the scattered waves are obtained. Using a virtually-meshed grid in the plate, an image with respect to the probability of the arrival time at individual nodes is achieved, indicating the location of damage as perceived by individual actuator-sensor paths. Compromised and conjunctive data fusion techniques are applied to aggregate the images for all engaged actuator-sensor paths, to provide a complete appraisal of the location of damage. The diagnostic results demonstrate that the proposed approach is capable of identifying multiple notches with good accuracy in terms of their position.

This paper presents the binding characteristics study of dengue non-structural protein 1 (NS1) antigen and its antibody using circular dichroism technique in far UV region. Circular dichroism (CD) is a spectroscopic technique which measures differences in the absorption of left-handed and right handed circularly polarized light. The CD spectrum can determine conformation of the NS1 antigen and its antibody, conformational changes of the antigen-antibody interaction and estimates the secondary structure of these proteins in far UV region. Firstly, CD spectrum of individual solutions of the antigen and the antibody were measured. Then, the solutions were mixed to produce a solution of complex dengue NS1 antigen and its antibody for measurement. The findings show that the antibody has the highest positive band of CD intensity follow by the complex antigen-antibody and antigen. The antibody is a chiral structure, has high helical conformation and more ordered epitope structure. Meanwhile, the NS1 antigen shows the negative and the lowest CD spectrum. The antigen is low chirality and has more random-like conformation. The complex (binding of the antigen and antibody) has the CD spectrum's shape similar to the antibody but in lower intensity. So, it has helical and beta conformations lower than the antibody. The binding characteristics of the complex solutions were also studied with increased in incubation time and with varied rotation applied. It is found that the immunoreactions between the antigen and its antibody are rapid processes which do not require too long incubation time. Besides, the applied rotation can increased the immunoreaction process.

Curtin University of Technology’s engineering faculty addresses its students as ‘student engineers’. There is a subtle but important distinction between an engineering student and a student engineer. It is a challenge to have our students make that distinction and to engage with the processes of professional engineering *** paper reports on an innovative first year ‘engineering Foundations: Principles and Communications (EFPC)’ unit that embeds the acquisition of communication skills in a technically based project. The project revolves around two engineering constructs: a popsicle stick bridge and a mousetrap-powered car. The design and construction of each construct is conducted by different teams of students — each team designs a bridge and constructs a car, or vice versa. Each team follows recognised procedures of process and communication for the design, tendering and production of the *** students to work both as designers and constructors introduces them to the different communication requirements of each role. More powerfully, they also assume the role of client for each others’ engineering project, providing a valuable alternative perspective. Within this technical context the unit also teaches students to write engineering case study reports, give professional presentations on their project and work in teams. These are all principal skills that are essential in the real engineering *** project has led to significant improvements in students’ communication skills, as well as their perceived learning outcomes. It has introduced students to essential lifelong learning skills and has challenged them to become effective communicators, better team players and more professional in their approach to engineering projects.
