Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is a non-invasive neuroimaging technique that recently has been used to measure changes in cerebral blood oxygenation associated with brain activity. Numbers of research groups have applied general linear model (GLM) based method to analyze the NIRS data. However, classical GLM based method cannot provide on-line analysis. Therefore, its usage is constrained in processing NIRS data where real-time feedback is required. In the present paper, we are proposing a framework for NIRS based on-line brain activation mapping. The framework employs an extended GLM with coefficients updated by an extended Kalman particle filter for on-line brain activation mapping. A set of data recorded in a finger tapping experiment was studied using the proposed framework. The results so obtained, suggested that the method can effectively locate brain activation areas on-line with the noisy NIRS signal, thereby demonstrating its potential for real-time NIRS-based brain imaging applications.

This paper introduces a novel approach for measuring low pressures based on MEMS technology. In this technique the mechanism of squeeze film damping is used. A voltage is applied to a fixed-fixed MEMS beam and its step response is obtained; for each pressure there is a different response. Then the settling time is measured and we can relate each settling time with a defined pressure. Here, first we use some equations to relate pressure with the squeeze film damping effect; after that we use a micro beam model and relate its parameters with pressure. Then we use numerical analysis and simulation to show the procedure of pressure measuring. All simulation results are shown and discussed.

In large induction machines (such as cage large induction motor pumps in the petro-chemical industry and cage or wound-rotor induction generators in wind turbines) reliability and longevity is advantageous. This is particularly relevant to wind turbine generators which can be inaccessible. There will be some degree of tolerance and wear that will lead to low-level rotor eccentricity. For a p_(m)-pole pair machine there will be p_(m)+-1 pole pair flux waves set up by the eccentricity which will generate unbalanced magnetic pull (UMP), as well as additional higher space harmonics. This paper addresses the use of stator damper windings to reduce the side-band flux waves and hence attenuate the UMP. Examples are put forward in terms of a 10 pole cage-rotor machine with static or dynamic rotor eccentricity and then extended to use a 4 pole machine wound-rotor machine. A tested analytical model is developed to include these damper windings and the wound rotor;they are shown to reduce the UMP, particularly in a wound-rotor machine. The simulations here are in terms of a wound-rotor machine but this can be extended for DFIG operation.

Mixture of Experts (ME) is a modular neural network architecture for supervised learning. In this paper, we propose an evidence-based ME to deal with the classification problem. In the basic form of ME the problem space is automatically divided into several subspaces for the experts and the outputs of experts are combined by a gating network. Satisfactory performance of the basic ME depends on the diversity among experts. In conventional ME, different initialization of experts and supervision of the gating network during the learning procedure, provide the diversity. The main idea of our proposed method is to employ the Dempster-Shafer (D-S) theory of evidence to improve determination of learning parameters (which results more diverse experts) and the way of combining experts' decisions. Experimental results with some data sets from UCI repository show that our proposed method yields better classification rates as compared to basic ME and static combining of neural network based on D-S theory.

Security of an information system depends to a large extent on its ability to authenticate legitimate users as well as to withstand attacks of various kinds. Confidence in its ability to provide adequate authentication is, however, waning. This is largely due to the wrongful use of passwords by many users. In this paper, the design and development of keystroke pressure-based typing biometrics for individual user's verification which based on the analysis of habitual typing of individuals is discussed. The paper examines the use of maximum pressure exerted on the keyboard and time latency between keystrokes as features to create typing patterns for individual users. Combining both an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) and Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) are adopted as classifiers to verify the authorized and unauthorized users based on extracted features of typing biometric. The effectiveness of the proposed system is evaluated based upon False Reject Rate (FRR) and False Accept Rate (FAR). A series of experiment shows that the proposed system that used combined classifiers produces promising result for both FAR and FRR.

Performance analysis and optimized design of backward-curved airfoil centrifugal blowers

In this study, backward-curved airfoil centrifugal blowers were numerically simulated and compared with experimentally measured data. Simulation settings and boundary conditions are stated, and the measurements follow ANSI/AMCA Standard 210-07/ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 51-07, Laboratory Methods of Testing Fans for Certified Aerodynamic Performance Rating (AMCA/ASHRAE 2007). Comparing simulation results with measured data, it was found that the deviation of the static pressure curve at each specified flow rate was within 4.8% and the deviation of the efficiency curve was within 15.1%. After the simulation scheme was proven valid, the effects of blade angle, blade number, tongue length, and scroll contour were discussed. Several parameter changes are suggested based on these simulations. An optimized design is presented with a 7.9% improvement in static pressure and a 1.5% improvement in efficiency. Overall, the whole process simulates backward-curved airfoil centrifugal blowers effectively and is a powerful design tool for blower development and improvement. © 2009, American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers, Inc.

Vehicle suspension systems have been extensively explored in the past decades, contributing to ride comfort, handling and safety improvements. The new generation of power-train and propulsion systems, as a new trend in modern vehicles, poses significant challenges to suspension system design. Consequently, novel suspension concepts are required, not only to improve the vehicle's dynamic performance, but also to enhance the fuel economy by utilizing regeneration functions. However, the development of new-generation suspension systems necessitates advanced suspension components, such as springs and dampers. This paper presents the concept, design, and modeling of a novel hybrid electromagnetic/hydraulic damper for automotive suspension applications. This study indicates that the coupling of active/passive systems benefits the power consumption issue in active systems, while saving cost and weight. A potential hybrid damper design is proposed, where hydraulic damping effect is employed as a source of passive damping. The active part of the damper is designed to satisfy the required active force. The designed damper is analyzed under the steady-state conditions to determine the correlation between the passive damper performance and design parameters. It is demonstrated that a passive damping of ~1700 Ns/m can be achieved, by the addition of the viscous fluid to the active damper, which guaranties a failsafe damper in case of power failure.

Effect on the output voltages and output currents of proton exchange membrane fuel cell used as power sources for autonomous underwater vehicles during load change

This paper uses a 5kW Ballard PEMFC (proton exchange membrane fuel cell) Mark V manufactured by Canadian company as power sources for autonomous underwater vehicles. The PEMFC works with pure H2 and O2 as the reactant gases. Moreover, the effect of the operating temperature and operating pressure on the polarization curve of PEMFC is analyzed in this paper. Since the output voltage of PEMFC can be easily affected by load variations and polarization losses, its output voltage is not stable. Thus, a DC/DC power converter with a voltage mode control is designed to automatically regulate the output voltage of PEMFC in this paper. Based on the output voltage of Ballard PEMFC, the output voltages of 5V, 12V, 24V and 48V DC can be obtained to supply for autonomous underwater vehicles. Additionally, the effects of load change on the voltages and currents at the source and load terminals are investigated in this paper.

For the purpose of design, manufacture and verification, a consistent geometrical model for the product function is required. In the product life circle, full implementation of the GPS standard is to effectively analyze, optimize and control the factors related to the quality of product geometrical dimension. It's very difficult for the designer to manage them. This paper first analyzed GPS's role in product's quality control, then typical CAx data format and interface are studied to realize data bidirectional transform. The method is proposed to integrate GPS standards in typical CAx by using TOOLKIT interface provided by Pro/ENGINEER. Associate GPS modules are embedded. Finally, integrated platform is developed. The integrated platform can reduce the application costs of GPS standards;moreover, it can achieve the automatic control and optimization of product's geometric quality. © 2008 SPIE.

Bearing prognosis based on chaotic indicators, wavelet index, and adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System

This paper presents a scheme for estimating future state of bearing's condition over a range of speed and load. The proposed prognosis method consists of three main components: monitoring indices, a forecasting algorithm, and decision-making rules. Three monitoring indices extracted from measured vibration signals are employed as input to the forecasting algorithm. Two of the proposed indicators are shown to be insensitive to speed-and-load. The third indicator shows some dependency on speed, yet there is a marked difference in its values between normal and damaged bearings. An Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System, ANFIS, is utilized in the current work for forecasting. A comparison is conducted between ANFIS and the Recurrent Neural Network, RNN, and found ANFIS to be more effective as a forecasting algorithm. Finally, a set of logical rules is defined to combine the prognosis results of the ANFIS based scheme. It is found that a well-trained ANFIS is capable of accurately forecasting the condition of the bearing under different speeds and loads. © 2008 COMADEM International.
