Studies for enhancing network speed and capacity to handle the rapid increases in traffic are being conducted. Even in optical access, which is the backbone network, studies on next generation modulation schemes that utilize phase and amplitude, rather than modulation by conventional light intensity, are being conducted. However, it is difficult to update all the terminals at once, and there is a possibility that signals with old and new modulation schemes coexist on one optical fiber. Such situations are known to yield high error rates. Therefore, this study evaluates the effectiveness of TCM (Trellis Coded Modulation), which is an error correcting scheme. © 2019 IEEE.

Recent research into raising the speed and capacity of optical access networks has focused on converting RF (Radio Frequency) signals into optical signals. One approach to efficient transmission, combining wide spread OOK (ON-OFF Keying) systems with phase modulation, is being actively researched. However, studies to date have considered only the downlink. This paper focuses on the uplink of optical access networks and proposes a method for demodulating superimposed OOK and phase modulation signals. © 2019 IEEE.

Amateur radio stations, which use greater radiation power than smartphones, are expected to have a high specific absorption rate (SAR). However, few studies have explored the electromagnetic wave exposure in amateur stations. In this paper, we propose mounting a reflector on a 1.2-GHz-band monopole antenna that is mounted on a transceiver-simulating metallic case. Numerical analysis was performed through the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method using a simple brain-equivalent model and a numerical model of the human body. The results demonstrated that the SAR can be reduced through the proposed method without greatly altering the antenna characteristics. © 2019 IEEE.

When mobile communication terminals are used, miniaturized antennas interact with the human body. For example, a planar inverted-F antenna, which is a typical small antenna, is the result of the application of various miniaturization techniques. In previous research, a multiple folded planer inverted-F antenna working at a 429 MHz band was proposed to be mounted on a housing. However, the evaluation of the performance of this equipment has not been established near the human body. Therefore, in this paper, its behavior is evaluated through simulation and measurement. The specific absorption rate is also evaluated through this simulation.

This paper presents a radiopropagation algorithm based on a Ray Tracing (RT) technique that combines a modified multipath model for constant refractivity gradient profiles and the Uniform Theory of Diffraction (UTD). A novel formulation is proposed by the authors for calculation and ground-reflection analysis of ray paths depending on atmospheric refractivity. The algorithm introduced herein was evaluated in a mixed scenario and in two more realistic case studies, under conditions of constant refractivity gradient and lossy terrain profiles. Pathloss results are obtained and compared with Parabolic Equation (PE) numerical solution results at 2.0 GHz, 3.5 GHz and 5.4 GHz. In such conditions, the modified radiopropagation multipath algorithm with atmospheric refractivity introduced herein showed satisfactory results. © 2023 SBMO/SBMag.

Control of an autonomous robot moving in cluttered environments guided by a single CCD camera is described in this paper. The objective is to guide the mobile robot to arrive at a goal pose (position and orientation) started from an initial pose in the environment where there may be static obstacles that can be observed by the camera. The control scheme consists in three modules: the control module which ensures the exponential tracking to a desired trajectory; the on-line path/trajectory planning module which plans the desired path using LOS (Light-of-Sight) strategy and then parametrizes it into a trajectory; and the depth-estimation module which takes a sequence of target image along the path in the CCD camera mounted in the mobile robot to estimate the target Cartesian coordinate in the inertial frame and passes it to the path/trajectory module. The trajectory tracking controller and the depth observer are devised relying on the contraction analysis ensuring the exponential convergence in both designs. Simulations are included to illustrate the control scheme.

This paper presents new conditions to design linear parameter-varying (LPV) state-feedback controllers for systems under saturating actuators. The proposed design ensures a minimal rate of contractivity of an associated Lyapunov function. A proportional-integral (PI) like structure is employed to ensure null tracking error for piecewise constant reference signals. Therefore, this proposal fits the design requirements of LPV and quasi-LPV real systems under saturating actuators. Experimental essays conducted on a second-order nonlinear level control illustrate the potential of the proposed approach. Additionally, the tests indicate how the contractivity rate affects the size of the estimate of the region of attraction.

Self-supervised approach for facial movement based optical flow

Computing optical flow is a fundamental problem in computer vision. However, deep learning-based optical flow techniques do not perform well for non-rigid movements such as those found in faces, primarily due to lack of the training data representing the fine facial motion. We hypothesize that learning optical flow on face motion data will improve the quality of predicted flow on faces. The aim of this work is threefold: (1) exploring self-supervised techniques to generate optical flow ground truth for face images;(2) computing baseline results on the effects of using face data to train Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) for predicting optical flow;and (3) using the learned optical flow in micro-expression recognition to demonstrate its effectiveness. We generate optical flow ground truth using facial key-points in the BP4D-Spontaneous dataset. The generated optical flow is used to train the FlowNetS architecture to test its performance on the generated dataset. The performance of FlowNetS trained on face images surpassed that of other optical flow CNN architectures, demonstrating its usefulness. Our optical flow features are further compared with other methods using the STSTNet micro-expression classifier, and the results indicate that the optical flow obtained using this work has promising applications in facial expression analysis. © 2021, CC BY.

Indoor Localization has been a challenging task in robotics for years, due to the obstruction of the GPS signals. Although multiple techniques have been proposed, determining the best among them is still highly dependent on applications and no best solution is agreed on. One technique, researchers and developers are adopting -especially in the robotics field-, is the visual/inertial sensor fusion. However, the high number of these systems and their diversity, makes selecting the adequate one for an application a challenging task. This paper aims at presenting an exhaustive list indoor positioning techniques with more emphasis on visual/depth sensors, along with some recommendations for selected applications. © 2019 IEEE.
