Mining automation began in the 1960s to increase safety in underground mines. Today, robotic and autonomous systems perform specific mining activities, creating new oppor-tunities and a more efficient and safe industry. This paper proposes a novel solution for instrumentation for autonomous trucks working in open-pit mines, specifically during the parking maneuver to load ore. In this case, new hardware and firmware are developed to compute the future coordinates of the excavator bucket using two Global Positioning Systems (GPS) receivers. In this approach, employing the concept of geometry and information from the GPS receivers, the future coordinates of the excavator bucket are calculated and made available to control the system, parking the autonomous truck in the desired position. The results demonstrate the accurate positioning of the off-highway truck during the ore-loading process, allowing for the correct execution of the truck's autonomous positioning maneuver.

The urgent need for sustainable energy sources has fuelled research into alternative power generation technologies. Among these, hydrogen fuel cells have emerged as promising candidates due to their high energy efficiency and zero-emission profile. This study presents a review on hydrogen energy and fuel cell. The design principles for fuel cells, hydrogen production methods, hydrogen storage technologies and the integration of fuel cells into power systems have been discussed. The review concludes with a discussion on technological advances in fuel cell materials and environmental impacts/sustainability of hydrogen fuel cells.

The worldwide need for sustainable energy solutions has continued to attract the attention of researchers. One vital means for such provision is the harvesting of energy using various methods. This study therefore reviews the recent trends in energy harvesting. Methods such as vibration energy harvesting as well as electrostatic energy harvesting and their applications have been thoroughly discussed. The study also reviewed the challenges with this energy harvesting methods and finally concludes with the future directions of this topic. It is believed that the generation of energy if greatly boosted will drive the economy of any state and ultimately result in wealth generation for the economy. © 2024 IEEE.

Biodiesel is gaining popularity due to its environmental benefits and renewable nature. Biomass has the potential to replace fossil fuels that release carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, it might as well make a significant contribution to reducing the greenhouse effect. It has, nevertheless, some setbacks including its demanding land and water use, the risk of losing arable lands to it and the impact of cutting and processing biofuel products. This study therefore reviews the production techniques and merits associated with biodiesel. This review projects the production and use of high-quality biodiesel, thereby paving the way for a more sustainable transportation future with reduced reliance on fossil fuels.

Accurate parameter estimation is of increasing importance in system modeling and control of highperformance motor drive systems. The inaccurate calculation or assumption of the system modal parameters may cause instability and/or bias control performance. This work presents the mathematical modeling, simulation, and experimental study to estimate the mechanical parameters of a two-mass-model system in DC motor drives using Artificial Swarm Intelligence. The electrical parameters such as resistance and inductance are usually provided by the DC motor manufacturer. However, the mechanical parameters such as the moment of inertia, and viscous friction will vary when the motor is connected to a mechanical load for a given application. Computer modeling and parameter estimation of the system were carried out using MATLAB/Simulink software. The parameters estimation of the mechanical side of a DC Motor drive system will be converted into an optimization problem using an objective function. The standard PSO algorithm is compared to the proposed modified PSO algorithms in the literature.

The use of non-intrusive acoustic flow meters for residential applications has been little explored. This work presents the development of a non-intrusive acoustic instrument for low water flow rates measured at a PVC pipe knee. A chest piece of stethoscope with an electret microphone was used, and 10 collection cycles were performed, in a range of 16 to 488 liters/hour (lph). The results show that there is a quadratic relationship between the standard deviation of the acoustic signal and the water flow, and the existence of a transition region is predicted. Furthermore, there was an exponential relationship between the standard deviation of the detail coefficients of the Wavelet Transform and the energy of the approximation coefficients with the fluidic flow. Thus, as far as we know, this is the first time that a correlation between the acoustic noise generated by a low flow of water on a residential scale is presented. This approach represents a potential alternative for monitoring water consumption at specific points in a residence, which, in turn, enables the identification of user patterns and contributes to the management of the distribution of water resources in a given location. © 2022, The Authors. This work presents the benefits of using an adaptive model predictive control approach for controlling an ESP-lifted oil well system. The idea behind the proposed scheme is the successive linearization of the plant nonlinear model and incorporate it into an infinite-horizon MPC formulation, which handles feasibility issues by considering slacked terminal constraints. Also, suitable use of a zone control strategy to deal with time-varying ESP operating envelope constraints (downthrust and upthrust) becomes the approach implementable in practice. Nonlinear plant-model mismatch scenarios, including simulation of unmeasured disturbances and the tracking of ESP operation economic targets, show the effectiveness of the proposed controller concerning different operating conditions of the oil production process equipped with ESP.

Automatic crop classification using new technologies is recognized as one of the most important assets in today’s smart farming improvement. Investments in technology and innovation are key issues for shaping agricultural productivity as well as the inclusiveness and sustainability of the global agricultural transformation. Digital image processing (DIP) has been widely adopted in this field, by merging Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) based remote sensing and deep learning (DL) as a powerful tool for crop classification. Despite the wide range of alternatives, the proper selection of a DL approach is still an open and challenging issue. In this work, we carry out an exhaustive performance evaluation of three remarkable and lightweight DL approaches, namely: Visual Geometry Group (VGG), Residual Neural Network (ResNet) and Inception V3, tested on high resolution agriculture crop images dataset. Experimental results show that InceptionV3 outperforms VGG and ResNet in terms of precision (0,92), accuracy (0,97), recall (0,91), AUC (0,98), PCR (0,97), and F1 (0,91). © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

LiDAR detection of long-range vehicles is challenging because very few and sparse points are measured in long distances and vehicles with similar shapes of targets could lead to false positives easily. To tackle these challenges, taking the environment information (HD maps) into account could be beneficial to predetermine where targets are more or less likely to appear. Compared with semantic maps, HD maps formed by point clouds provide much richer information from surrounding static objects and scenes. In this work, we construct a GNN-based feature extraction of point cloud maps to increase the receptive fields of learning map features. Our work is based on PVRCNN, the state-of-the-art LiDAR object detection method. With point-wise and voxel-wise features obtained from PVRCNN, residual feature fusion is proposed to fuse the features from PVRCNN and the map features from GNN. Our approach is evaluated on NuScenes dataset. It achieves a 24.78% average precision improvement for long-range objects at 40–50 meters, the farthest areas with ground truth annotation. Our approach also has a 4.22% reduction of false positives in the entire sensing areas.
