Ecological Determinants of Forest to the Abundance of Lutzomyia longiflocosa in Tello, Colombia

Lutzomyia longiflocosa is considered the most likely vector of cutaneous leishmaniasis in the sub-Andean region of the upper valley of the Magdalena River between 1,000 and 2,000 meters in the Department of Huila, Colombia. L. longiflocosa is anthropophilic, has endophagic behavior, and is especially important since its dominance in epidemics recorded in the last decade in the departments of Huila, Tolima, and the outbreak in Norte de Santander. The aim of our work is to identify ecological determinants in forest microhabitat level defining the abundance of L. longiflocosa. We use sampling;this was performed in 56 microhabitats of 28 forests with CDC traps for two consecutive nights from 18:00 to 06:00 hours. Each microhabitat (favorable and unfavorable) was located 10 m from the ecotone, with an approximate area of 10 m². Thirty-five variables were examined as potential explanatory variables which were recorded in each microhabitat. Regression models were used to identify ecological determinants. Our results confirm that there are favorable microhabitats in the forest with specific ecological determinants that define the aggregated distribution of the species and provide the conditions necessary for survival and abundance of L. longiflocosa. © 2015 Ruthber Rodríguez Serrezuela and Luis Alexander Carvajal Pinilla.

This paper shows the design of an electronic device which was developed to suit a white cane or Hoover cane in order to provide an intelligent assistant for blind people. This device has a haptic interface, which establishes communication with blind people through the touch by the use of vibrations of a motor. To get data from the environment to the microcontroller, an array of proximity sensors is used. The device is designed to be an embedded ergonomic module. The designed device exhibited a high efficiency at detecting obstacles, which offers reliability and confidence to blind people. © 2014 IEEE.

This paper presents a strategy for controlling the terminal voltage of a three phase switched rectifier. The novelty of the proposed method is that we use model reference adaptive control (MRAC) along with a custom designed switching mechanism. The switching mechanism is inspired by quantized control techniques. In this paper we do not focus on controlling the individual line currents but only on controlling the terminal voltage. The mathematical formulation of this problem is presented following the MRAC framework. Further we also validate the mathematical model by comparing its output with a Simulink based model which uses pre-existing blocks from the appropriate Simulink toolbox. Finally we also present simulation results of the proposed control scheme to show that using MRAC with the proposed quantization technique achieves desired *** work can be extended in future for extracting maximum power from wind generators in a microgrid system.

Navigation is an important topic in mobile robots. In this paper, an Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) is used to localize a mobile robot equipped with an encoder, compass, IMU and GPS utilizing three different approaches. Subsequently, an input output state feedback linearization (I-O SFL) method is used to control the robot along the desired robot trajectory. The presented algorithms are verified when the robot was steered along two different track shapes. Additionally, the performance of the method is demonstrated when a faultwas simulated on the sensors.

Low‐cost, single‐step synthesis of hollow nanotubes of N‐doped carbon deposited on CoS is enabled by the simultaneous use of three functionalities of polyacrylonitrite (PAN) nanofibers: 1) a substrate for loading active materials, 2) a sacrificial template for creating hollow tubular structures, and 3) a precursor for in situ nitrogen doping. The N‐doped carbon in hollow tubes of CoS provides a high‐capacity anode of long cycle life for a rechargeable Li‐ion or Na‐ion battery cell that undergoes the conversion reaction 2 A + +2 e − +CoS →Co+A 2 S with A=Li or Na.

A wide range of applications in Micro-Electro-Mechanical systems (MEMS) has attracted many investigators in fluid flow and heat transfer in micro scale. As a continuation of ongoing research on this field, in the current study, thermal analysis of steady-state fully developed laminar gaseous flow in a parallel plate macro- and microchannel with two different constant heat fluxes at walls (asymmetrically heated walls) was considered. The rarefaction and viscous heating effects were also taken into consideration. The radiative heat transfer effect was examined through the inclusion of Rosseland approximation term in the energy equation. The first order slip velocity and temperature jump boundary conditions were implemented at the wall. Closed-form expressions were analytically obtained for temperature distributions and Nusselt number. The results indicate that increasing either Brinkman number or radiation parameter causes a decrease in heat transfer rate for the symmetrical wall heating case. Furthermore, when the wall is exposed to asymmetric wall heating, in contrast to heat fluxes ratio, increasing the radiation parameter decreases Nusselt number of lower wall. Also, increasing either the radiation parameter or heat fluxes ratio results in a reduction in Nusselt number of upper wall beyond singularity points existing in this case, whereas the opposite behavior is observed for Nusselt number of upper wall prior to these points.

A nonlinear control algorithm is given for a class of quadrotors operating in small angles. The control of 6-DOF moving platform using only four actuators results in an under-actuated control system. In order to transform the dynamics in affine form, an additional constraint is applied on the actuation mechanism that reduces the independent control signals even further. In this paper, the system is decomposed in to three fully actuated subsystems;in pitch, roll and yaw domains. Local subcontrollers are designed using partial feedback linearization. The proposed multi Lyapunov function based switching control algorithm is employed to achieve tracking of Cartesian space motion and the heading angle of the quadrotor. Local stability of the closed-loop system is shown in the flight region of interest. The performance of the proposed controller is illustrated to follow a desired position, velocity and the heading angle of quadrotor. © 2014 American Automatic Control Council.

Correct discrimination of essential tremor from Parkinson's tremor is a major problem in clinical neurology as minor differences in the tremor patterns are hard to distinguish. Mathematical analysis of tremor signals recorded non-invasively has been widely accepted for tremor differentiation. However, classification of tremor signals collected from electromyograph or accelerometer, based on time and frequency domain techniques has limited accuracy because of overlapping frequency range and non-stationary nature of those signals. This paper describes a simple, non-invasive decision making logic method for discrimination of tremor. Wavelet transform based feature extraction technique in combination with feed forward type artificial neural network is proposed. Fractal dimensions of wavelet features of the decomposed detailed coefficients are used as the feature matrix. The neural network classified the tremor sEMG signals with 91.66% accuracy and 100% in case of accelerometer signals. Although, the classification accuracy of sEMG signal is comparable to that of accelerometer but the localized involuntary vibratory nature of tremor at the extremities of human body puts accelerometer as a better option in cases where tremor fails to excite the muscle. This proposed classification algorithm adds strength to the non-invasive signal detection methods at reduced cost and higher sensitivity.

This paper describes the mathematical model of the suspension of a robot traction of crawler type, in order to reduce mechanical vibrations caused by operation of the motors and overcoming obstacles in a path. The analysis in reference becomes relevant to the extent that the mechanical vibrations generated damage to the structure and electronic elements in this when the natural frequency of them is reached. The mathematical model of the suspension is based on the Newton-Euler method, which allows to obtain the differential equations conformed by forces and torques acting on the robot in motion. The robot in question, has an additional degree of freedom because the caterpillars are not fixed to 90 degrees, but can have a different angle of opening. As a result of analysis and mathematical model, the constants of elasticity and damping are adjusted so that the system acquires a response, such that the sprung mass has a minor impact on the vibrations generated in the distance covered. © 2014 IEEE.

The Use of voice-controlled remote and automatic systems, is currently being implemented more frequently in the industrial sector in the management of variables in production processes and in the domestic sector for controlling of home automatic systems. This is because it allows more efficient processes, and substantially reduces execution times. The purpose of this work is to implement a voice commanded and remote control to manage a production system, in which routines are controlled without having to type parameters or physical modifications of the actuators, this also has a constant monitoring system of the processes that are running in real time, allowing continuous control of variables, the data is displayed on a mobile device, which provides versatility in handling and does not limit the user to be present to verify process. The electronic control is performed by an Arduino board due to its multiple applications and easy programming, data transfer between the mobile device and the physical control system was performed using a Wi-Fi module built in the Arduino board, and the process of Voice commands was performed with an application adapted to work with the whole integrated system such as actuators and sensors.
