The Cu-15Ni-8Sn alloy ingot was prepared in the medium-frequency induction melting furnace. The hot extruded alloy was treated by solid solution at 840 °C for 60 min and aging at 400 °C for different times (0 min~480 min). The effect of aging time on the evolution of the nanophase of Cu-15Ni-8Sn alloy and the strengthening-toughening mechanism were studied. The results show that at the beginning of aging, the alloy undergoes spinodal decomposition, the wavelength of the modulated structure is approximately 3~7 nm, the ordered phase transformation of D022 and L12 occurs simultaneously, and the ordered phase size is approximately 5 nm. With the extension of aging time, the modulated structure became coarser, and the wavelength of the modulated structure increased to 5~9 nm. At the same time, the D022 ordered phase changed to the L12 ordered phase, and a continuous distribution of elliptical discontinuous precipitation appeared at the grain boundary. The ratio of the long and short axes of the discontinuous precipitation was approximately 4.7. In the late aging period, the D022 ordered phase was basically transformed into the L12 ordered phase, and discontinuous precipitation, which is incompatible with the matrix, extended into the crystal. After 120 min of aging at 400°C, the hardness, strength, and elongation of the alloy are 105.4 HRB, 839.8 MPa and 9.6%, respectively. The peak-aging states D022 and L12 coexist in an orderly phase at the nanoscale, and this nanoscale strengthening phase is completely integrated with the matrix, which improves the strength and toughness of the alloy. The kinematics of humanoid robots are strongly inspired by the human archetype. A close analysis of the kinematics of the human musculoskeletal system reveals that the human joint axes are oriented within certain inclinations. This is in contrast to the most popular humanoid design with a configuration based on perpendicular joint axes. This paper reviews the oblique joint axes of the mainly involved joints for locomotion of the human musculoskeletal system. We elaborate on how the oblique axes affect the performance of walking and running. The mechanisms are put into perspective for the locomotion types of walking and running. In particular, walking robots can highly benefit from using oblique joint axes. For running, the primary goal is to align the axis of motion to the mainly active sagittal plane. The results of this analysis can serve as a guideline for the kinematic design of a humanoid robot and a prior for optimization-based approaches.

This paper proposes matrix-scaled consensus algorithm, which generalizes the scaled consensus algorithm in [1]. In (scalar) scaled consensus algorithms, the agents’ states do not converge to a common value, but to different points along a straight line in the state space, which depends on the scaling factors and the initial states of the agents. In the matrix-scaled consensus algorithm, a positive/negative definite matrix weight is assigned to each agent. Each agent updates its state based on the product of the sum of relative matrix scaled states and the sign of the matrix weight. Under the proposed algorithm, each agent asymptotically converges to a final point differing with a common consensus point by the inverse of its own scaling matrix. Thus, the final states of the agents are not restricted to a straight line but are extended to an open subspace of the state-space. Convergence analysis of matrix-scaled consensus for single and double-integrator agents are studied in detail. Simulation results are given to support the analysis.

Leukemia detection using computer vision algorithms is a significant step in computer-assisted diagnosis for a pathologist. In order to extract the blood cells, many color space models are used for image enhancement and as the preprocessing steps. The present work compares the effect of the green, saturation, Cb and M component of RGB, HSV, YCbCr and CMY color spaces for segmentation of nucleus of blast cells in a leukemia patient's blood smear. The segmentation result of each color space for every ten images is divided into three categories i.e. only WBC segmentation, WBC with peripheral cells and all blood cell segmentation. The study demonstrates that the performance of segmentation is negatively correlated with contrast and illuminance of the input image. HSV and CMY models obtained 85% segmentation accuracy. The present study would help researchers to narrow down their selection when choosing a color space model for segmenting the nucleus of leukemia blast cells. © 2020 IEEE.

As an essential unit of Large Scale NC Machine Tools, the gear faults diagnosis is especially critical. However, due to the deficient data collected from monitoring system, these complex diagnostic issues usually exposing in modern industrial is still intractable. Therefore, a diagnostic model for gear complex faults with deficient data is developed in this study, where a size-variable re-sampling measure is designed to handle the mission and challenges with scarce fault monitoring data. Secondly, a gradual anti-noise recovery scheme is formed to solve the recognition troubles with missing surveillance data. Thirdly, an improved sparse auto-encoder based diagnostic model is built to identify the running state of gear. Finally, the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed diagnostic model are verified by gears complex faults tests.

The energy contained in the tidal motion of the seas and oceans has the potential to be a significant source of renewable energy. The oscillating hydrofoil current-energy turbine has a good performance to extract energy from the coupling of its heaving and pitching motions. In the present study, the wing-in-ground (WIG) effect has been considered to improve the power-extraction performance of the oscillating hydrofoils. The overset grid in the commercial computational fluid dynamic (CFD) software STAR CCM+ is applied to study the flapping hydrofoil with dynamic WIG effect between two hydrofoils. The simulation results show that the WIG effect can greatly improve the power extraction performance of the flapping hydrofoil. The WIG effect is asymmetric over the course of the foil moving toward or leaving from the symmetry plane. The distance of the gap has a major influence on the hydrodynamic performances of the flapping hydrofoil. For a moderate gap, the positive pressure on the lower surface enhances as the hydrofoil departs from the symmetry plane and causes an improvement of lift and moment coefficients. As the gap decreases further, the increasing negative pressure between the leading edge and the symmetry plane plays an essential role improving the power extraction as the hydrofoil approaches the symmetry plane. Compared to the case without the WIG effect, the power-extraction efficiency has an increment of 16.34% in the present study. © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Towards Energy Efficient Distributed Federated Learning for 6G Networks

The provision of communication services via portable and mobile devices, such as aerial base stations, is a crucial concept to be realized in 5G/6G networks. Conventionally, IoT/edge devices need to transmit the data directly to the base station for training the model using machine learning techniques. The data transmission introduces privacy issues that might lead to security concerns and monetary losses. Recently, Federated learning was proposed to partially solve privacy issues via model-sharing with base station. However, the centralized nature of federated learning only allow the devices within the vicinity of base stations to share the trained models. Furthermore, the long-range communication compels the devices to increase transmission power, which raises the energy efficiency concerns. In this work, we propose distributed federated learning (DBFL) framework that overcomes the connectivity and energy efficiency issues for distant devices. The DBFL framework is compatible with mobile edge computing architecture that connects the devices in a distributed manner using clustering protocols. Experimental results show that the framework increases the classification performance by 7.4% in comparison to conventional federated learning while reducing the energy consumption. © 2022, CC BY-NC-ND.

A series of defect-rich carbon particles with different sizes are successfully synthesized via a facile synthesis process. Various characterizations demonstrate that the particle size increases with the carbonization time increases, while the defect level presents an opposite trend, and as a result the defect-enriched carbon annealing at 800 ℃ for 2 hours (DEC-800-2) achieves the optimum balance between them, which is favorable for increasing potassium storage sites and improving conductivity. Thus, the DEC-800-2 electrode delivers 220.9 mAh g-1 at 0.5 A g-1 after 100 cycles, accompanied by a good rate capability (156.9 mAh g-1 at 2 A g-1 after 2000 cycles). © 2023, The Authors. This article investigates the design of robust H∞ filters for Takagi–Sugeno (T–S) fuzzy systems with time-varying delays, with a critical challenge in many consumer electronics applications. We extend existing research by incorporating Markovian jump parameters to model system uncertainties and considering internal–like time–varying delays, which are prevalent in real-world scenarios such as wireless communication and networked control systems in consumer devices. To address the complexities introduced by time-varying delays, we employ a three-term approximation model that more accurately captures the system dynamics compared to traditional approaches. Furthermore, we incorporate the time derivative of the membership functions (MFs) into the filter design, and its impact on system stability and performance. To ensure filter stability, we derive novel stability conditions based on the mode–dependent Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional approach, incorporating constraints on the higher bounds of the MF time derivatives. Leveraging the small–gain theorem with scaling techniques, we propose the design of both full-order and reduced-order H∞ filters, expressed in terms of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). These LMI–based solutions provide a systematic and computationally efficient approach for filter synthesis. Finally, we validate the effectiveness of our proposed filtering strategies through illustrative examples drawn from relevant consumer electronics applications, such as noise cancellation in audio devices, image stabilization in cameras, and vibration suppression in wearable devices. The results demonstrate the enhanced robustness and performance of the proposed filters in the presence of time-varying delays and uncertainties. © 1975-2011 IEEE.

Development of carbon fibre reinforced polymer matrix composites and optimization of the process parameters for railcar applications

The potential use of carbon fibre for railcar application stems from its excellent properties such as high strength to weight ratio and fire retarding abilities. This work studies the development of carbon fibre reinforced epoxy matrix composites and the optimization of the process parameters for railcar applications. Using the transfer moulding process, the composite comprising of mixture of double layers of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) based carbon fibre as reinforcement, epoxy resin which serves as the binder to form the matrix and silica additives were prepared and cured in a mould. The numerical experiment was performed using the Response Surface Methodology (RSM) and central composite design (CCD) comprising of two factors namely; the curing temperature (100–180 °C) and curing time (6–24 h). The statistical analysis of the numerical and physical experimentations were used to obtain a predictive model that correlates the tensile strength as a function of the curing temperature and curing time. There is a high degree of correlation between the results obtained from both the numerical and physical experimentations which implies that the developed model is suitable for predictive and correlative purposes. In addition, the results of the mechanical properties of the developed composite material indicate high tensile strength under varying loading conditions. This is an indication that the material possesses good strength and stiffness which makes the composite suitable for railcar applications. This work bring about the development of carbon fibre reinforced polymer and the determination of its mechanical properties for railcar applications.
