Infrared (IR) thermography is a fast-growing Nondestructive Testing (NDT) technique. Various sources can be used as the thermal stimulation, such as flash lamps, laser, ultrasound, and eddy current etc. Currently, various quantification methods for defect depth estimation are built based on the surface heating, heat conduction or thermal wave diffusion. Microwave heating is a new heating technique, which has a lot of advantages, such as strong penetrability, selective heating, volumetric heating, significant energy savings, uniform heating, and good thermal efficiency. In this work, the basic principle of microwave thermography (MWT) is introduced. The developments and case studies of microwave thermography are reviewed.

Microwave based technique plays a vital role in non-destructive testing(NDT) field. A microwave based NDT method has been developed to detect and evaluate atmospheric corrosion under paint. The results are promising, the measurement sensitivity and resolution of microwave NDT can be significantly improved with known the lift-off(air layer) in the corrosion detection applications. The aim of this investigation was achieved by using electromagnetic computer simulation technology(CST 2012) describing the interaction of microwave signals radiated out of an open-ended rectangular waveguide with a layered medium. This CST program calculates the reflection coefficient(simulating corrosion measurements), and describes the field distribution in multiple layered media. Steel sample with 12 months exposure time has been measured. The experimental results were obtained by using a microwave NDT scanning system that was built according to the results of the theoretical investigation, and they confirmed the theoretical results.

This paper presents a method for amplitude and phase calibration in a spaceborne multibeam receiver, which is based on the satellite-ground link, to solve the inconsistent problem in amplitude and phase between different channels. In this method, the calibrating signal is firstly immitted by a ground control station, and then the discrepancy of amplitude and phase between different channels and the reference channel in the receiver are determined by signal processing. And self-calibration would finally be achieved by some inversion operations. Additionally, this paper adopted an advanced discrete fourier transform method to determine the parameters which is help to overcome the spectral leakage caused by the doppler frequency shift. Results denote that errors of amplitude and phase would heavily influence the beam pointing and beam shape for a spaceborne multibeam receiver which will lead to a distinct decline in performance. However, this problem is meliorated after our adapting the method in this paper to calibrate the amplitude and phase errors of the receiver.
