Background Diarrhoeal diseases claim more than 1 million lives annually and are a leading cause of death in children younger than 5 years. Comprehensive global estimates of the diarrhoeal disease burden for specific age groups of children younger than 5 years are scarce, and the burden in children older than 5 years and in adults is also understudied. We used results from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2021 to assess the burden of, and trends in, diarrhoeal diseases overall and attributable to 13 pathogens, as well as the contributions of associated risk factors, in children and adults in 204 countries and territories from 1990 to 2021. Methods We used the Cause of Death Ensemble modelling strategy to analyse vital registration data, verbal autopsy data, mortality surveillance data, and minimally invasive tissue sampling data. We used DisMod-MR (version 2.1), a Bayesian meta-regression tool, to analyse incidence and prevalence data identified via systematic reviews, population-based surveys, and claims and inpatient data. We calculated diarrhoeal disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) as the sum of years of life lost (YLLs) and years lived with disability (YLDs) for each location, year, and age-sex group. For aetiology estimation, we used a counterfactual approach to quantify population-attributable fractions (PAFs). Additionally, we estimated the diarrhoeal disease burden attributable to the independent effects of risk factors using the comparative risk assessment framework. Findings In 2021, diarrhoeal diseases caused an estimated 1.17 million (95% uncertainty interval 0.793-1.62) deaths globally, representing a 60.3% (50.6-69.0) decrease since 1990 (2.93 million [2.31-3.73] deaths). The most pronounced decline was in children younger than 5 years, with a 79.2% (72.4-84.6) decrease in diarrhoeal deaths. Despite substantial declines since 2000, lower respiratory infections (LRIs), diarrhoeal diseases, and malaria remain among the leading causes of nonfatal and fatal disease burden for children under 5 years of age (under 5), primarily in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). The spatial burden of each of these diseases has been estimated subnationally across SSA, yet no prior analyses have examined the pattern of their combined burden. Here we synthesise subnational estimates of the burden of LRIs, diarrhoea, and malaria in children under-5 from 2000 to 2017 for 43 sub-Saharan countries. Some units faced a relatively equal burden from each of the three diseases, while others had one or two dominant sources of unit-level burden, with no consistent pattern geographically across the entire subcontinent. Using a subnational counterfactual analysis, we show that nearly 300 million DALYs could have been averted since 2000 by raising all units to their national average. Our findings are directly relevant for decision-makers in determining which and targeting where the most appropriate interventions are for increasing child survival. © 2022, The Author(s).

Solar pores are intense concentrations of magnetic flux that emerge through the Sun’s photosphere. When compared to sunspots, they are much smaller in diameter and hence can be impacted and buffeted by neighbouring granular activity to generate significant magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) wave energy flux within their confines. However, observations of solar pores from ground-based telescope facilities may struggle to capture subtle motions synonymous with higher-order MHD wave signatures due to seeing effects produced in the Earth’s atmosphere. Hence, we have exploited timely seeing-free and high-quality observations of four small magnetic pores from the High Resolution Telescope (HRT) of the Polarimetric and Helioseismic Imager (PHI) on board the Solar Orbiter spacecraft, during its first close perihelion passage in March 2022 (at a distance of 0.5 au from the Sun). Through acquisition of data under stable observing conditions, we have been able to measure the area fluctuations and horizontal displacements of the solar pores. Cross correlations between perturbations in intensity, area, line-of-sight velocity, and magnetic fields, coupled with the first-time application of novel Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) techniques on the boundary oscillations, provide a comprehensive diagnosis of the embedded MHD waves as sausage and kink modes. Additionally, the previously elusive m = 2 fluting mode is identified in the most magnetically isolated of the four pores. An important consideration lies in how the identified wave modes contribute towards the transfer of energy into the upper solar atmosphere. We find that the four pores examined have approximately 56%, 72%, 52%, and 34% of their total wave energy associated with the identified sausage modes, and around 23%, 17%, 39%, and 49% to their kink modes, respectively, while the first pore also has around an 11% contribution linked to the fluting mode. The vision-based target recognition and tracking have received much attention in the field of robotics. Existing methods mainly focus on the vision perception of individual robot with a single view, however, the performance is susceptible to illumination and occlusion. Multi-robot collaborative perception provides a potential solution to deal with the limitation of single-view observation, however, the challenging of environmental adaptability for multi-robot collaborative decision still remains unsolved. To solve this problem, this paper proposes a two-level adaptive target recognition and tracking method based on vision for multi-robot system. The problem of multi-robot target recognition and tracking is solved under a two-level framework, which contains the features fusion level of individual robot and the cooperation level of multi-robot system. In the first level, the features measuring results that influence the visual perception of individual robot are fused, while the second level combines the voting of each robot together to determine the target for multi-robot system. Both the features measuring weights and robots voting weights are adaptively updated according to their evaluation, which lead to a beneficial result where the features and robots with higher accuracy play major roles in the first and second levels, respectively. Therefore, a good adaptability to the environments can be guaranteed. The experimental results show that the proposed approach can realize the coordination of multi-robot system in target recognition and tracking with an effective performance.

The consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) is associated with type 2 diabetes (T2D) and cardiovascular diseases (CVD). However, an updated and comprehensive assessment of the global burden attributable to SSBs remains scarce. Here we estimated SSB-attributable T2D and CVD burdens across 184 countries in 1990 and 2020 globally, regionally and nationally, incorporating data from the Global Dietary Database, jointly stratified by age, sex, educational attainment and urbanicity. In 2020, 2.2 million (95% uncertainty interval 2.0–2.3) new T2D cases and 1.2 million (95% uncertainty interval 1.1–1.3) new CVD cases were attributable to SSBs worldwide, representing 9.8% and 3.1%, respectively, of all incident cases. Globally, proportional SSB-attributable burdens were higher among men versus women, younger versus older adults, higher- versus lower-educated adults, and adults in urban versus rural areas. By world region, the highest SSB-attributable percentage burdens were in Latin America and the Caribbean (T2D: 24.4%; CVD: 11.3%) and sub-Saharan Africa (T2D: 21.5%; CVD: 10.5%). From 1990 to 2020, the largest proportional increases in SSB-attributable incident T2D and CVD cases were in sub-Saharan Africa (+8.8% and +4.4%, respectively). Our study highlights the countries and subpopulations most affected by cardiometabolic disease associated with SSB consumption, assisting in shaping effective policies and interventions to reduce these burdens globally.

Identifying position-dependent mechanical systems: A modal approach with applications to wafer stage control

Increasingly stringent performance requirements for motion control necessitate the use of increasingly detailed models of the system behavior. Motion systems inherently move, therefore, spatio-temporal models of the flexible dynamics are essential. In this paper, a two-step approach for the identification of the spatio-temporal behavior of mechanical systems is developed and applied to a prototype industrial wafer stage with a lightweight design for fast and highly accurate positioning. The proposed approach exploits a modal modeling framework and combines recently developed powerful linear time invariant (LTI) identification tools with a spline-based mode-shape interpolation approach to estimate the spatial system behavior. The experimental results for the wafer stage application confirm the suitability of the proposed approach for the identification of complex position-dependent mechanical systems, and show the pivotal role of the obtained models for improved motion control performance. Electrical bioimpedance spectroscopy as a tool for non-destructive monitoring nitrogen supply in two lettuce genotypes

Accurate monitoring of nutrient supply is crucial for effective plant nutrition management. This study introduces a bioimpedance spectroscopy (BIS) approach to evaluate how lettuce genotypes respond to nitrogen (N) supply, illuminating the link between BIS and N metabolism. The research consisted of two parts: a preliminary experiment focusing on extracellular fluid resistance, followed by a second experiment involving five different N treatments applied to two lettuce genotypes. BIS spectra were recorded from 1 Hz to 100 kHz, with a total of 224 measurements. Plant physiological analyses assessed total and extracellular fluid nitrate (NO 3 − ) concentrations, pigment concentration, total N content, and cell membrane stability index. In the preliminary experiment, a significant negative correlation was observed between extracellular fluid NO 3 − concentration and extracellular fluid resistance (r = – 0.67). Furthermore, the frequency range around 63 Hz (R 2 = 0.97) appeared most sensitive to NO 3 − dynamics in the ‘Kobak’ lettuce genotype. In the two lettuce genotypes exposed to the five different N treatments, extracellular fluid resistance negatively correlated with total N and NO 3 − content ( r = – 0.76 and – 0.73), while vacuole fluid resistance showed a moderate correlation ( r = – 0.51). Cell membrane capacitance was also significantly correlated with membrane stability index ( r = 0.68), indicating that low-N conditions reduce membrane charge storage. However, these correlations appeared highly genotype dependent. Heatmap-based hierarchical clustering of Z-score standardized BIS parameters further confirmed these genotype-specific patterns. Collectively, these findings suggest that BIS captures key aspects of N uptake and storage, particularly in the extracellular fluid compartment. With the continuous growth of wind power integration into the electrical grid, accurate wind power forecasting is an important component in management and operation of power systems. Given the challenging nature of wind power forecasting, various methods are presented in the literature to improve wind power forecasting accuracy. Among them, combining different techniques to construct hybrid models has been frequently reported in the literature. Decomposition-based models are a family of hybrid models that firstly decompose the wind speed/power time series into relatively more stationary subseries, and then build forecasting models for each subseries. In this paper, we present a comprehensive review of decomposition-based wind forecasting methods in order to explore their effectiveness. Decomposition-based hybrid forecasting models are classified into different groups based on the decomposition methods, such as, wavelet, empirical mode decomposition, seasonal adjust methods, variational mode decomposition, intrinsic time-scale decomposition, and bernaola galvan algorithm. We discuss decomposition methods in the context of alternative forecasting algorithms, and explore the challenges of each method. Comparative analysis of various decomposition-based models is also provided. We also explore current research activities and challenges, and identify potential directions for future research on this subject.

This paper is devoted to proposing a simple method to tune the parameters of a fractional order PI (FOPI) controller. The studied control scheme is a fractional filtered Smith predictor (FFSP) structure, which can compensate for the inherently long dead time of the industrial processes. The proposed frequency domain scheme would be a practical approach to compensate the stable processes, which can be modeled by a fractional order counterpart of First Order Plus Dead Time (FOPDT) transfer function. Two fractional order filters are also used to improve the reference tracking and to enhance the robustness of the compensated system. The obtained results of practical implementation on a pressure plant and the comparison results are given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed technique.
