The dissimilar joining using gas tungsten arc welding - brazing of 304 stainless steel to 5083 Al alloy had been conducted with the addition of Al-Cu eutectic filler metal. The interface microstructure formation between filler metal and substrates, and spreading of the filler metal were studied. The interface microstructure between filler metal and aluminum alloy characterized that the formation of pores and elongated grains with the initiation of micro cracks. The spreading of the liquid braze filler on stainless steel side packed the edges and appeared as convex shape, whereas a concave shape has been formed on aluminum side. The major compounds formed at the fusion zone interface were determined by using X-ray diffraction techniques and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analysis. The micro hardness at the weld interfaces found to be higher than the substrates owing to the presence of Fe2Al5 and CuAl2 intermetallic compounds. The maximum tensile strength of the weld joints was about 95 MPa, and the tensile fracture occurred at heat affected zone on weak material of the aluminum side and/or at stainless steel/weld seam interface along intermetallic layer. The interface formation and its effect on mechanical properties of the welds during gas tungsten arc welding-brazing has been discussed.

A real snake has simple figure like a string, and has highly adaptability corresponding to the environments/tasks. A snake-like robot mimics such highly adaptability of the real snake, is expected as an adaptable robot corresponding to the environments/tasks. Many literatures have reported with respect to locomotion controls of the snake-like robot, but haven't reported studies for applications. However, enhancement of the applications is required in real scenes of which the snake-like robot is expected to work. This paper reports to design the force controller to realize the cutting task by the snake-like robot, as a leading example of the force control in the real scenes. Since the force control in the feed direction and the servo control in its normal direction are required in order to realize the cutting task, the Dynamic Hybrid Position/Force Control System is designed. The Virtual Internal Model based on the impedance model is utilized as the force control method. The Model Following Servo Control System utilizing the Virtual Internal Model based on the impedance model is designed, and the Dynamic Hybrid Position/Force Control System is realized. Effectiveness of the designed control system is verified through a numerical simulation.

Piezo steppers or piezo-walk actuators are attractive primararily because of their high accuracy and long range of motion combined in a single actuator. They are commonly used devices for short stroke scanners where significant range of motion is desired with good displacement resolution. A major performance limiting factor in these actuators is that, during stepping, large disturbances and vibrations are induced due to hammering action of the clamp piezolegs leading to development of stepping errors. In order to reduce these stepping errors, a good control scheme needs to be developed to drive the clamp piezo legs. It is of great advantage to use the self sensing property of the piezolegs to get a feedback signal because it prevents design changes to the actuator and saves valuable space. In this research, the self-sensing property of the piezolegs is applied to detect contact. This paper presents a novel application of the self-sensing contact detection method and a successful implementation inside the piezo-stepper to detect contact of the piezolegs with the driving rod.

Dimensioning the battery capacity for any kind of electric vehicle a compromise between electric range and costs has to be found. Therefore it is important for manufacturers to obtain characteristic values and profiles concerning user behavior, e.g. average daily driven distances, based on real life data. In this paper, corresponding results of a field test with extended range electric vehicles in Germany are presented. The focus in the field test was on private frequent drivers and users in companies with above average yearly mileages. The results are compared to those of other projects and studies and allow the extraction of consequences for the battery dimensioning.

In this paper, we consider a hybrid system consisting of a motion stage that exhibits, from a control point-of-view, position-dependent dynamics as a result of varying sensor configurations. A scheduled controller design is proposed that is intuitive for control engineers as all individual filters can be obtained using classical frequency-domain loop-shaping techniques thereby connecting to the industrial motion control practice. Moreover, data-based graphical conditions are provided in the frequency-domain under which closed-loop stability can be verified irrespective of how the switching between the controllers occurs in time. The effectiveness of the proposed scheduling technique, as a way to improve both transient and steady-state performance compared to the current state-of-the-art industrial control solution, is demonstrated by means of experiments on a high-precision industrial motion stage. © 2015, IFAC (International Federation of Automatic Control) Hosting by Elsevier Ltd. This paper addresses the design problem of a stable parallel feedforward compensator V for a given SISO LTI plant P (possibly being of non-minimum phase and/or having relative degree greater than one). The objective of the problem is that their parallel interconnection P+V becomes minimum phase having relative degree one. Based on the classical results of simultaneous stabilization, a necessary and sufficient condition for solving the problem is presented as well as a design procedure for constructing such a compensator. The proposed feedforward compensator allows the control system to have the three useful features: (1) the ability that assigns the zeros of P+V to a region of complex numbers having arbitrary negative real parts, (2) infinite gain margin property of P+V controlled by a static output feedback, and (3) block diagonal structure of P+V. These features are extensively exploited in the synchronization problem of multi-agent systems to achieve arbitrary fast convergence rate and to have the synchronized trajectory independent of the initial conditions and parameters of the involved dynamic controllers. © 2015 Elsevier Ltd.

In dealing with inherent limitations during stage control design, the possibilities of a second-order reset element (SORE) are studied, in particular, a second-order low-pass filter with reset. Inducing significantly less phase lag, which follows from describing function analysis, SOREs allow for a significant increase of bandwidth in comparison to linear second-order elements. Being part of a reset control design procedure, loop-shaping of the linear feedback loop with a reset element will be based on a describing function description of this element. For the reset control system, closed-loop stability will be verified by solving linear matrix inequalities. The validity and predictive value of the control design procedure (both in terms of stability and performance) will be demonstrated by means of (measurement) results obtained from an industrial wafer stage system.

The proper modeling of radiation is of great importance in numerical simulation of combustion processes. A simple gray weighted-sum-of-gray-gases (WSGG) model has been intensively used in CFD simulations of industrial combustion applications, mainly because of its low computational costs. However, the gray assumption is far from the real behavior of non-gray combustion gases. This could consequently affect the accuracy of temperature field and heat flux distribution predictions. On the other hand, modern non-gray global radiation models such as the standard spectral line-based weighted-sum-od-gray-gases (SLW) model are still computationally expensive for many engineering purposes. To overcome this shortcoming, we recently introduced the SLW3-opt model, which could efficiently calculate radiative heat transfer in combustion processes. Here, we implement the SLW3-opt model and further a gray WSGG model to simulate a utility boiler numerically. We first validate the accuracy of these models in the radiation calculations of an enclosure as a representative of a flame in a furnace. Investigation of the results demonstrates that the SLW3-opt model could provide the same accuracy of the standard SLW model in this test problem;however, with much lower computational costs. This is while the results of the gray WSGG model suffer from poor accuracy. Next, we simulate the case of a heavy duty steam generator using a comprehensive mathematical model for turbulent reactive flow. We present the results of numerical simulation by applying both SLW3-opt and gray WSGG models. Comparisons in this case also display that the gray predictions of temperature field and heat flux distribution have noticeable differences with the predictions provided by the SLW3-opt model. Therefore, care should be taken in applying the gray WSGG model to industrial CFD simulations.
