In this paper, an analytical time-domain model is presented to analyze the radio over free space optical (RoFSO) systems under two turbulence channels, the log-normal and the exponential channel. This analytical model uses general cases of a dual-drive Mach-Zehnder modulator (DD-MZM) and photodetector (PD) for typical optical double sideband (ODSB) and single sideband (OSSB) signals under turbulence channels. This results in output current after a PD as a function of the summation of each frequency component in time domain. Additionally, we derive a closed-form average BER performance under turbulence channels. The numerical result shows that as the scintillation index increases from 0.25 to 0.75 under the log-normal channel, the average BER decreases almost 5.6 dB at the signal power of -30 dBm for ODSB.

Landmine detection is a hazardous operation. To reduce the human casualties during landmine detection, unmanned ground vehicles (UGV) can be used. There are many landmine detection modalities that can be used with a UGV. However, the ground-penetrating radar (GPR) and the metal detector (MD; electromagnetic induction sensor) are fast and may be the most reliable means of landmine detection. In addition, GPR and MD sensors can easily be packaged in one sensor head. It is also easy to configure the sensor heads in an array. To combine GPR and MD sensor data, a series of experiments has been performed. The GPR and MD combined sensor is scanned over a 2 m × 2 m × 1 m soil box at a constant height. The soil box contains stony sand and a landmine, which is buried at 200 mm depth when measured from the surface of the ground to the top of the landmine. The control parameters for the experiments are sensor height and soil moisture. The sensor height is varied from 40 mm to 100 mm with 20 mm increment from the soil. The soil moisture conditions considered in the experiments are dry and wet. The stony sand used in the experiments contains rocks with approximately 100 mm diameter scattered in a random manner and a brick placed 200 mm apart horizontally from the landmine. The GPR and MD responses are recorded for all control parameter combinations and later analyzed. The GPR images are generated using time-domain back projection (TDBP) algorithm. The GPR images and MD responses are compared for the soil conditions and sensor heights. A combination algorithm, which enhances GPR images using MD responses, is also presented.

Distributed detection has newly received research interest due to the success of the emerging wireless sensor network (WSN) technology. To deal with the problem of distributed detection for the WSN having the energy constraint, the fusion of decisions modeled as weak signals is studied. By using the weak signal model and additive non-Gaussian noise channels in the canonical parallel fusion scheme, we propose an asymptotic fusion rule applicable for wide classes of noise probability density functions (pdfs). In the particular case of a known pdf, an optimal detection rule is given. Both asymptotic analysis and Monte Carlo simulation are used to examine the performance of the proposed detection fusion rule.

A challenge for automating mechanical assembly is that cumulative uncertainties typically exceed part clearances, which makes conventional position-based tactics unsuccessful. Force-based assembly strategies offer a potential solution, although such methods are still poorly understood and can be difficult to program. In this paper, we describe a force-based robotic assembly approach that uses fixed strategies with tunable parameters. A generic assembly strategy suitable for execution on an industrial robot is selected by the programmer. Parameters are then self-tuned empirically by the robot using a genetic-algorithm learning process that seeks to minimize assembly time subject to contact-force limits. Results are presented for two automotive part assembly examples using ABB robots with commercial force-control software, showing that the approach is highly effective and suitable for industrial use.

This paper presents an LED BLU driving circuit with a local-dimming structure. The efficiency of the proposed LED driver has been improved by parallel driving 8 serial-connected LED arrays. It employed the soft-switching boost converter topology to reduce the switching power loss of the hard switching boost converter. The soft-switching converter reveals superior ripple and efficiency. A smaller inductance can be used for the soft-switching converter contrasting to the hard-switching one and studied on an over-voltage protection circuit of the output of the driver at the no load condition.

A new synthetic heterodyne laser Doppler interferometer based on homodyne interferometer is addressed in this work. Interference signal includes the DC offset that is light intensity. The DC offset must be got rid because it does not need to obtain a velocity. The high pass filter is used instead of the subtracter. DC offset having random variation is difficult to get rid as using the subtracter itself. When the vibration amplitude is smaller than at least 1 / 2 of the wavelength of He-Ne laser, a serious problem of incorrect velocity measurement can be caused since there is non-zero crossing interference signal whose DC value can be eliminated in using the HPF. In order to solve this problem of using the HPF in the homodyne interferometer, a synthetic interferometer using a mechanical modulation method is proposed in this work by exciting a reference mirror with the displacement larger than the 1/2 of the wavelength. In this work, the analytical work is presented to show how the synthetic interferometer solves the problem of incorrect velocity measurement using the Fourier-Bessel function description of the interference signals. Simulation and Experimental works are also presented to validate the synthetic heterodyne interferometer proposed in the work.

Characterization of photoconductive CdS thin films prepared on glass substrates for photoconductive-sensor applications

Cadmium sulfide (CdS) thin films with n -type semiconductor characteristics were prepared at room temperature on glass substrates by radio-frequency magnetron sputtering for photoconductive-sensor applications. Films deposited at room temperature exhibit polycrystalline phases and show smooth surface morphologies. The deposition rate of the films decreases with increasing working pressure. The dark- and photoresistances in 400-nm -thick CdS films deposited at 6.7 10-1 Pa and 80 W were approximately 1 105 and 3 104 sq, respectively. Lowering both the dark- and photoresistances lowers the sensitivity (Rdark Rphoto) of the resistance. © 2008 American Vacuum Society.

AnyKids Service is made to test the feasibility of the AnyRobot based on the AnyRobot Studio platform.

In this paper, an active recognition photo system (ARPS) is presented. ARPS is one of applications designed for child care robots. ARPS automatically evaluates good photos of children with natural look, stores them and recognizes those photos for delivering them to each childpsilas parents. For the realization of ARPS, a photo evaluator evaluating qualities of photos and a face recognizer using image sequences are proposed. ARPS has been validated its performance by 2 months of field test carried out in a children nursery.
