Manufacturing industries in Japan are recently exposed to a severe competition, global mega competition. In such a situation, it is indispensable for manufacturing industries to encourage global cooperation, to cope with changes quickly and flexibly and to create knowledge and increase product value. By means of an information management system, called "FlexPIM", we proposed a new concept of information management and a new IT system. This system intends to provide us a non-real-time distributed collaboration based on the "Shared-Room-Metaphor". We employed this system practically, and evaluated the function to urge knowledge creation. © 2004 IEEE.

The shot based clustering and retrieval is very important for video database organization and access. We can take advantage of semantic clustering to enhance the performance of traditional content-based video retrieval. In this paper, text feature and color feature are first extracted directly from shots. Subsequently, a two-level hierarchical clustering structure that provides indexing scheme for retrieval is constructed by incorporating text and color features. The top level is clustered by text features while the bottom level is clustered by color features. The constructed structure is then used for the cluster-based retrieval. The effectiveness and efficiency of our approach are demonstrated by the experimental results in retrieving and ranking similar video shots.

Path generation algorithms for AUV's homing and docking are presented. Optimization technique with a proper cost function is given for the homing process, and prediction algorithm for 1st stage-docking process. Dock position and pose estimation algorithm using geometric and perspective relationship of circle in 3-dimention space and ellipse in projected 2-D plane is introduced for real time vision tracking algorithm of 2nd stage-docking process. Simulations using MATLAB program and experiments for dock position and pose estimation algorithm show that robust estimation algorithm can get practically exact pose and position of dock.

It is suggested that static mechanical properties and Hertzian indentation data allows to predict dynamic behavior of armor ceramics. Spherical indentation on several armor ceramics was conducted and yield strength and strain-hardening coefficient was determined for each specimens. In addition, controlled explosive indentation was conducted to evaluate the damage behavior of armor ceramics to simulate the impact loading. Simultaneously dynamic fracture of armor ceramics, based on static mechanical properties and Hertzian indentation data, was investigated by recently developed two dimensional explicit time integration finite element method. Simulation results show good agreement with experimental one. In conclusion, combination of Hertzian indentation and brittle fracture implemented finite element method would be a powerful tool for the prediction of dynamic fracture behavior of armor ceramics.

Presents an active noise control (ANC) algorithm using a genetic algorithm with infinite impulse response (IIR) filter structure. Stochastic gradient algorithms such as the least mean square (LMS) algorithm are conventionally used for their simplicity and stability. But these algorithms have disadvantages of local minimum and large eigenvalue disparity of input signal's autocorrelation matrix. To solve those problems, several researches have been made into adaptive filtering schemes based on genetic algorithms. But their application is limited to the system that is able to know the desired signal directly. In general active noise and vibration control systems are not able to sense the desired signal directly, so they have some difficulties or problems such that learning sample set is proportional to population size. The proposed active controller is composed of genetic controllers that can learn by one sample set per one generation. This structure can be properly applied to active control systems. Computer simulations show that the proposed genetic structured IIR active controller has a more optimal result than feedforward active noise control systems.

This paper proposes a flexible transfer system (FTS) as one of the self-organizing manufacturing systems. The FTS is composed of autonomous robotic modules, which transfer a palette carrying an object. Through the self-organization of a multilayer strategic vector field corresponding to a task, the FTS can generate quasi-optimal transfer path in fully distributed way. We apply the learning automata for path generation algorithm. Simulation is conducted to evaluate the basic performance of the system and the results show the feasibility of application. Also, the developed hardware is explained.

The flexible transfer system (FTS) is a self-organizing manufacturing system composed of autonomous robotic modules, which transfer a palette carrying machining parts. The central issue is realization of both higher efficiency and flexibility to cope with environmental change, such as a sudden change of machining plan or breakdowns of the modules. Through the self-organization of a multi-layered strategic vector field corresponding to a task, the FTS can generate a quasi-optimal transfer path with learning automata. Also, the optimal planning is attempted by use of genetic algorithms, and is based on the global information on the system. We propose a hybridization method between the distributed and centralized approaches. Simulation is conducted to evaluate the basic system performance and the results show the effectiveness.

This paper presents an adaptive infinite impulse response (IIR) filtering algorithm using genetic algorithm for active noise control (ANC). Feedforward ANC systems are equivalent to system identification configuration whose reference model has infinite impulse response and input signal is colored. Stochastic gradient algorithms such as filtered-x least mean square (FXLMS) algorithm are conventionally used for their simplicity and stability. But these algorithms have disadvantages of local minimum and large eigenvalue disparity of input signal's autocorrelation matrix. To solve those problems we propose an IIR structure ANC algorithm with genetic algorithm which is well known as global optimization tools in control and signal processing area. Computer simulation shows that genetic IIR algorithm is superior to LMS IIR algorithm for insufficient case.

This paper deals with a sensor system based on the magnetostrictive effect, which is installed in a tool holder, for sensing cutting torque in order to monitor the milling process. Changes in the magnetic permeability of ferromagnetic alloy layers formed onto a rotating shaft due to torque are detected by coils as changes in impedance without contacting the rotating shaft. By mounting the magnetostrictive sensor on a tool holder, it became possible to detect cutting torque as close to the cutting point as possible. The accuracy of the proposed sensor system was confirmed through static and dynamic evaluation tests. In order to investigate the relationship between tool failure and cutting torque, side milling tests were performed, which bore out the possibility of estimating flank wear and tool fracture from the cutting torque detected by the proposed sensor system. © 1997 American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME).
