Ionic Polymer-Metal Composite (IPMC) is a new smart material which has sensing capability. In this paper, an experimental setup to characterize IPMC sensor is developed and corresponding sensor model is constructed based on neural networks. Similar to the other smart materials, intrinsic hysteresis nonlinearity is inherent in IPMC sensors. In this case, a hysteresis operator is introduced to transform the multi-valued mapping of hysteresis to a one-to-one mapping. Then, the corresponding neural model can be constructed by the neural network on the expanded input space. In order to compensate the nonlinearity of IPMC sensor, an inverse model is also constructed to form a feedforward compensator for the sensor. Finally, experimental results are presented to validate the proposed method of hysteresis compensation.

In this paper, a novel motion detector is proposed to perceive the weak changes in a image sequence. This is inspired by the mechanism of fixational eye movement and dynamics of vertebrate's cortex. We realized respectively an artificial model of visual attention selection, called dual-probe adaptive model (DPAM), and an active tremor operation (ATO) approach. It is found that between them there exists a resonance phenomenon. The phenomenon is enhanced when the ATO and the DPAM are in-phase and is suppressed when they are anti-phase. Based on this, we construct a novel motion detector combined by the ATO and the DPAM to resonate with the motion direction. This allows capturing moving edges even in the image sequences with lighting change and noisy background. Simulation and Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness.

The problem of tracking a smooth time-varying reference trajectory for Thomson's ring is addressed from the perspective of Active Disturbance Rejection control (ADRC). The tracking controller is designed on the basis of the tangent linearization model of the nonlinear system around a constant equilibrium point. The large height deviations, outside the region of validity of the approximate linearization, trigger the effect of unknown nonlinearities and exogenous perturbations. These disturbances are properly on-line estimated and canceled with the help of a linear extended observer-linear controller based output feedback control scheme. Experimental results are presented which validate the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme.

In this paper, a 90th order activated sludge process system is explored. From the original high order system, a disturbance between 1rad/s to 10rad/s are observed, hence frequency weighted model reduction techniques (FWMRT) are applied with a low pass filter of break frequency 0.5rad/s. Three well-known techniques are utilized and compared to the original system on a sigma plot. The reduction techniques are Enn's, Wang et al's and Lin and Chiu's. Results show that the fourth order reduction yields good results whereby all techniques follow the original well, i.e. the characteristics performance of the original system is retained. Although Wang et al follow the original system very closely, Enn's technique is able to smooth out the disturbance and give good error approximation.

This paper presents the control strategy and structure for the integrated vehicle-dynamics control of a test vehicle with single-wheel chassis actuators. It uses the degrees of freedom resulting from the over-actuation of the vehicle for an optimization of the tire force distribution. Different objectives are taken into account. The system consisting of optimization, local controllers, and the vehicle itself is considered in total as a nonlinear control plant and linearizised with exact linearization techniques.
