Smart card terminal systems using ISO/IEC 7816-3 interface and 8051 microprocessor based on the system-on-chip

A smart card terminal designed and developed to communicate with smart cards via a single System-on-Chip (SoC) is described in this paper. This proposed and developed SoC-based smart card terminal, designed with the Verilog Hardware Description Language (HDL) and the Simulation Program with Integrated Circuit Emphasis (SPICE), can be achieved and operated by proper connections to a Personal Computer (PC) and by dedicated software drivers that control the communication protocol between the smart card and the card terminal. We have also constructed an integrated test environment to verify the system developed. Through this test environment, we should be able to check all operational functions of the SoC-based developed smart card terminal microprocessor and smart card interface. We have applied the effective index method to reduce the two-dimensional refractive index profile into the one-dimensional refractive index structure and modified the wave equations to obtain the paraxial wave equations. Then, TE and TM polarized fields in the curved single-mode planar waveguides are analyzed by using the scalar beampropagation method employing the finite-difference method with a slab structure. The birefringence for TE and TM polarized fields in bent waveguides is calculated from the phase difference of the optical fields. The wavelength shift due to the birefringence of TE and TM polarized fields in bent waveguides is also calculated. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2003.

In this paper, we have proposed the merging of the OpenCable reference model with the smart card interface defined by ISO/IEC 7816-3 and have implemented a new Conditional Access System (CAS) using this interface along with a Personal Computer Memory Card International Association (PCMCIA) interface. In addition, we have also designed the hardware architecture of the Pointof- Deployment (POD) security module, designed with the Verilog HDL, using the above two interfaces. The designed POD security module has an embedded 32-bit Reduced Instruction Set Computer (RISC) microprocessor that manages applications, such as an MPEG-2 filter, descrambler, and Data Encryption Standard (DES).We have tested this modeled and designed system using a prototype and show satisfactory simulation results. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2003.

This paper has proposed the distributed power control (PC) algorithms that employ two evolutionary computation (EC) or genetic algorithm (GA) techniques in order to solve linear systems of equations for power update in CDMA cellular radio systems. The proposed algorithms are modeled on applying evolutionary computation algorithms with the phenotypic and genotypic views to the CDMA power control problem. The major gain from the applied evolutionary computation algorithms is more rapid optimization on linear systems of equations compared with the simple genetic algorithm (SGA). Employing the distributed constrained power control (DCPC) and bang-bang (BB) algorithms as the basic reference algorithms, we have designed and implemented computational experiments on the DS-CDMA system. The simulation results indicate that the proposed EC-DCPC phenotypic and GA-DCPC genotypic algorithms significantly decrease the mobile terminal power consumption compared with the DCPC and BB algorithms, respectively. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2003.

The active magnetic bearing (AMB) systems mounted in moving vehicles are exposed to the disturbances due to the base motion, often leading to malfunction or damage as well as inaccurate positioning of the systems. Thus, in the controller design of such AMB systems, robustness to base disturbances becomes an essential requirement. In this study, effective control schemes are proposed for the homo-polar AMB system, which uses permanent magnets for generation of bias magnetic flux, when it is subject to base motion, and its control performance is experimentally evaluated. The base motion of AMB system is modeled as the dynamic disturbances in the gravity and base excitation forces. To effectively compensate for the disturbances, the angle feed-forward controller based on the inverse dynamic model and the acceleration feed-forward controller based on the normalized filtered-X LMS algorithm and the inverse dynamic model are proposed. The performance test of the prototype AMB system is carried out, when the system is mounted on a six degrees-of-freedom motion platform. The experimental results show that the performance of the proposed controllers for the AMB system is satisfactory in compensating for the disturbances due to the base motion.

This paper describes an integrated approach to design and fabricate scaffold/cell constructs for tissue engineering. With this novel approach it becomes possible to produce scaffolds with controlled distribution of living cells and growth factors, a critical condition for successful grafting. Our idea consists of building a scaffold/cell construct by robotic micro-assembly of microscopic polymer building blocks. This paper introduces the rationale and concept of this interdisciplinary project and presents some realized steps. A 3D contact FEM simulation has been carried out to study the forces involved on the scaffold elements and micro-gripper during assembly. An error analysis has been performed to evaluate the accumulated error when building a scaffold/cell construct. A dedicated monolithic shape memory alloy micro-gripper has been realized and tested, which is able to handle parts in the range of 50-100 microns.

A new robotic desktop rapid prototyping (RP) system was designed to fabricate scaffolds for tissue engineering applications. The experimental setup consists of a computer-guided desktop robot and a one-component pneumatic dispenser. The dispensing material (chitosan and chitosan-hydroxyapatite (HA) dissolved in acetic acid) was stored in a 30-ml barrel and forced out through a small Teflonlined nozzle into a dispensing medium (sodium hydroxide-ethanol in ratio of 7:3). Layer-by-layer, the chitosan was fabricated with a preprogramed lay-down pattern. Neutralization of the chitosan forms a gel-like precipitate, and the hydrostatic pressure in the sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solution keeps the cuboid scaffold in shape. Comparison of the freeze-dried scaffold to the wet one showed linear and volumetric shrinkage of about 31% and 62%, respectively. A good attachment between layers allowed the chitosan matrix to form a fully interconnected channel architecture. Results of in vitro cell culture studies revealed the scaffold biocompatibility. The results of this preliminary study using the rapid prototyping robotic dispensing (RPBOD) system demonstrated its potential in fabricating three-dimensional (3D) scaffolds with regular and reproducible macropore architecture. © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. As many biomechanists indicate, a tendon plays an important role in running or jumping motions. It stores the kinetic energy as a potential energy during stance and also absorbs the impulse at touch down. Inspired by such biomechanical studies, we propose a simple mechanical model for the hindlimb of a dog to realize a robot that imitates a dog running, and the hardware design of a one-legged running robot, "Kenken". The robot has an articulated leg and uses two hydraulic actuators as muscles and a tensile spring as a tendon. The spring being attached like the gastrocnemius or plantaris enables the robot to produce sufficient propulsion force by virtue of the "energy transfer" from the knee, even if there is no actuator at the ankle joint. Using an empirical controller based on the characteristic dynamics of the model, the robot has succeeded in planar one-legged hopping. Although the problem related to the stability at higher speeds remains, experimental results demonstrate that the proposed hindlimb mechanism is effective for legged running.

Then, TE and TM polarized fields in the curved single-mode planar waveguides are analyzed by using the scalar beam-propagation method employing the finite-difference method with a slab structure. The bending loss in bent waveguides is analyzed for optical fields obtained from the beam-propagation method and comparisons are made between the loss for the waveguides with various radius of curvature and the refractive index difference. The outward shift of the optical field, which is generated at the connection between a straight and a bent waveguide, is obtained from the results of calculation of location of the maximum optical intensity. The transition loss can be reduced by introducing an optimized inward offset at a straight-to-bend junction.

Employing the distributed constrained power control (DCPC) as a basic reference algorithm we have designed and implemented computational experiments on the DS-CDMA system. The results indicate that the proposed algorithms significantly enhance the optimization and calculation speed of power control. The proposed algorithms are also compared with the bang-bang type algorithm used in the IS-95 and the W-CDMA systems. The results show that ow proposed the EC-DCPC phenotypic and GAPC genotypic algorithm also have a high potential advantage for increasing the CDMA cellular radio network capacity and decreasing the mobile terminal power consumption. ©2002 IEEE.
