This paper concerns a real-world application of an expert system to the automation of a zinc hydrometallurgy plant. The leaching process in zinc hydrometallurgy involves dissolving zinc-bearing material in dilute sulfuric acid to form a zinc sulfate solution. The key problems are to determine and track the optimal pHs of the overflows from the neutral and acid leaches, and to ensure the safe running of the process. This paper describes an expert control and fault diagnosis scheme that solves those problems. The expert control is based on a combination of steady-state mathematical models and rule models, and the fault diagnosis employs rule models with certainty factors and a Bayes representation. A real-world application of this scheme showed that it not only improved the control performance, but also correctly diagnosed faults.

A 3-phase, 30 kVA, 4 pole, 1800 rpm superconducting generator is built and tested. The field winding of the rotor is a racetrack type with NbTi superconducting wire. The rotor is composed of two dampers and a liquid helium container in which the field poles reside. The space between the outermost damper and the container is vacuum insulated. To continuously transfer the liquid helium from the stationary dewar into the rotor and return the helium gas conversely, a special coupling is installed. The stationary coupling is connected to the rotor through a ferrofluid seal. The open circuit characteristic (OCC) and short circuit characteristic (SCC) are obtained. Also, the test results under the light load (up to 3.6 kW) are given. From the design stage, 2-D FE analysis coupled with the external circuit has been performed. The external circuit includes the end winding resistance and reactance as well as two dampers. When compared with the test data, the FE analysis results show a very good agreement. © 2000 IEEE.

A control Strategy Combining Fuzzy control and Linear Quadratic control for Acrobots

A control strategy based on a combination of fuzzy control and linear quadratic control to control the acrobot is presented. The control torque to swing up is directly derived based on the energy of the acrobot. A fuzzy controller is designed to regulate the amplitude of the control torque from the energy during the upswing. After the acrobot enters a neighborhood of the straight up equilibrium position, a linear quadratic regulator is designed to balance it. The proposed control strategy simplifies the control of the acrobot and achieves better performance. The simulation results show the validity of the control strategy.

This paper presents a systematic design procedure for the auto-tuning self-commissioning (ATSC) control of a universal drive. The ATSC controller consists of five major parts: a current vector controller (CVC), a field-oriented vector controller (FVC), a servo loop controller (SLC), a self-commissioning controller (SCC), and an auto-tuning controller (ATC). The developed universal drive can be programmed to operate as a general-purpose adjustable speed inverter drive, a vector-controlled sensorless induction drive, a DC servo drive, a permanent-magnet AC servo drive, or an induction servo drive. The concept and architecture for the future development of universal drives are studied in this paper. We also illustrate some experimental studies of the developed universal drive in application to the ATSC control of an induction motor with unknown motor parameters.

This paper presents a novel vector control scheme for the sensorless control of induction motors with on-line rotor time constant adaptation. The motor speed can be estimated using only phase currents and DC-link voltage. An adaptive voltage compensation scheme is proposed to compensate nonlinearities resulted by the PWM inverter and to eliminate time delay of the sensing filters. The proposed online rotor time constant adaptation scheme is developed from a power transfer parameter identification algorithm to reduce sensitivity due to parameter mismatch and environment change. The proposed auto-tuning sensorless control scheme has been realized using a single-chip DSP controller (TMS320C14) from Texas Instruments. Experimental results reveals the proposed auto-tuning sensorless control scheme can achieve fast transient response and maintain a wide speed control range.

This paper presents the design and implementation of a vector control IC using complex programmable logic device (CPLD). A vector oriented control structure using integer arithmetic has been developed for the voltage or current regulation of 3-phase PWM inverters. This vector control IC can be used for the voltage or current control of a 3-phase PWM inverter using a vector command with specified amplitude, frequency, and phase. It has four operation modes: voltage or current control in either stationary or synchronous reference frame. This vector control IC is designed as a co-processor for a general-purpose microcontroller used for AC motor control and 3-phase power supplies. This vector control IC is realized with a 10-bit data bus and employs about 40 thousand logic gates of a CPLD (FLEX 10K 100) from Altera Co. The sampling rate can be programmed up to 50 kHz. Simulation and experimental results are given to illustrate the performance of the designed vector control IC.

This paper presents the design of a three-phase quasi-direct AC/DC/AC converter with minimum energy storage in the DC-link capacitor. The proposed digital control scheme can achieve unity power factor, lower current distortion on the utility side, and fast response to DC-link voltage regulation. A power balancing control scheme is used to minimize the required DC-link capacitor. The design procedure of the proposed method, accompanied with given simulation results, has been described.
