This paper introduces a framework to reduce operational costs in active distribution systems by utilizing battery energy storage systems. It employs a two-stage stochastic programming approach involving Here-and-Now and Wait-and-See decisions. The scheduling problem is studied as a mixed-integer linear programming model in GAMS and solved using the CPLEX solver. A feeder from an active electricity distribution network is chosen to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. Operating costs are evaluated under varying scenarios with and without energy storage across seasons. The research contributes to the literature by providing a comprehensive analysis of the strategic role of Battery Energy Storage System in optimizing operational efficiency and enhancing flexibility in active distribution networks. The findings underscore the critical value of energy storage in reducing costs and managing uncertainties in energy operations, as validated by the simulation results demonstrating the economic benefits of the proposed strategy.

This paper focuses on the tracking control problem for switched nonlinear ship maneuvering time-delay systems with only a heading angle available by adaptive neural network (NN) output feedback. Using the backstepping method, an adaptive NN control mechanism is designed to solve the problem cooperated with the state observer. The uncertain terms of the system are approximated by NNs, and the state observer is designed to estimate the yaw rate and rudder angle. The unknown time delays are overcome by exploiting the common Lyapunov-Krasovskii functionals (CLKFs). Combined with error transformation, the proposed control method guarantees that i) all of the signals for the system are semi-global uniformly ultimately boundedness (SGUUB) under arbitrary switching;and, ii) the tracking error of system output keeps within a small neighborhood around the origin. The results of simulation results are shown to demonstrate the feasibility of the control strategy. © 2022 IEEE.

The tracking accuracy in motion control systems like the moving stages in lithography machines, e.g., wafer scanners or metrology inspection tools, is partly determined by how the frequency content of its reference trajectories is transferred to the closed-loop tracking error. In this regard, fourth-order reference trajectories for point-to-point motion will be studied from a frequency-domain perspective. By appropriately pairing the maximum snap and maximum jerk values, weakly-damped modes in the closed-loop response can be robustly dealt with without introducing a penalty on throughput.

Safety is an essential asset when learning control policies for physical systems, as violating safety constraints during training can lead to expensive hardware damage. In response to this need, the field of safe learning has emerged with algorithms that can provide probabilistic safety guarantees without knowledge of the underlying system dynamics. Those algorithms often rely on Gaussian process inference. Unfortunately, Gaussian process inference scales cubically with the number of data points, limiting applicability to high-dimensional and embedded systems. In this paper, we propose a safe learning algorithm that provides probabilistic safety guarantees but leverages the Nadaraya-Watson estimator instead of Gaussian processes. For the Nadaraya-Watson estimator, we can reach logarithmic scaling with the number of data points. We provide theoretical guarantees for the estimates, embed them into a safe learning algorithm, and show numerical experiments on a simulated seven-degrees-of-freedom robot manipulator. Continuum soft robots are nonlinear mechanical systems with theoretically infinite degrees of freedom (DoFs) that exhibit complex behaviors. Achieving motor intelligence under dynamic conditions necessitates the development of control-oriented reduced-order models (ROMs), which employ as few DoFs as possible while still accurately capturing the core characteristics of the theoretically infinite-dimensional dynamics. However, there is no quantitative way to measure if the ROM of a soft robot has succeeded in this task. In other fields, like structural dynamics or flexible link robotics, linear normal modes are routinely used to this end. Yet, this theory is not applicable to soft robots due to their nonlinearities. In this work, we propose to use the recent nonlinear extension in modal theory -called eigenmanifolds- as a means to evaluate control-oriented models for soft robots and compare them. To achieve this, we propose three similarity metrics relying on the projection of the nonlinear modes of the system into a task space of interest. We use this approach to compare quantitatively, for the first time, ROMs of increasing order generated under the piecewise constant curvature (PCC) hypothesis with a high-dimensional finite element (FE)-like model of a soft arm. Results show that by increasing the order of the discretization, the eigenmanifolds of the PCC model converge to those of the FE model.

Hierarchical Continual Learning for Domain-Knowledge Retention in Healthcare Federated Learning

Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) applications encounter issues with data protection, continual adaptation, and domain-specific knowledge retention, especially in consumer-centric IoMT scenarios. We overcome these obstacles and facilitate effective knowledge retention and task adaptation in IoMT applications. This study attempts to create a unique privacy-preserving federated learning framework that combines a hierarchical learning structure with Continual Learning (CL). Despite the advancements in Federated Learning (FL), current models have trouble integrating changing datasets in real-time while protecting privacy, as well as catastrophic forgetting, which occurs when previously learned knowledge is lost when adjusting to new tasks. We present a hierarchical learning framework that makes use of three levels of models -Junior Model (JM), Consultant Model (CM), and Senior Consultant Model (SCM) -to overcome these drawbacks. Each level of the model aids in archived retention and domain-knowledge adaptation. To guarantee that the model maintains valuable information over time and adapts to new tasks with ease, our method blends domain adaptation strategies with ongoing learning approaches like knowledge distillation and elastic weight consolidation (EWC). We compare the suggested methodology with current state-of-the-art (SOTA) models on healthcare datasets for tasks like illness diagnosis and medical image categorization. According to our findings, the hierarchical continual learning model performs better than SOTA techniques in terms of accuracy, task adaptability, and privacy protection. In the healthcare industry, our study sets a new standard for privacy-preserving, continuously adaptable federated learning systems, allowing for real-time, scalable IoMT applications that can adapt dynamically to a variety of changing datasets. © 1975-2011 IEEE.

In order to prevent system failures, fault detection and performance assessment are always essential factors. This article investigates the practical implementation of common faults in a two-tank networked control system, one of the most widely utilized liquid-level control systems in the food industries, petrochemicals, and many more. The system was modeled and controlled, and then, faults were conducted on the system, including leakage, sedimentation, sensor bias, and pump stuck, which covered a wide range of fault types. After that, model-based fault detection methods, such as unknown input observer (UIO), parity, and factorization methods, were employed to evaluate fault implementation. By thresholding residuals of fault detection methods, the factorization method shows the most effective performance concerning false alarm rates (FAR), missed alarm rates (MAR), and detection delays (DD). Using the UIO is a suitable substitute, and parity is only appropriate for announcing the fault start time.

Optimal Resource Allocation between Two Nonfully Cooperative Wireless Networks under Malicious Attacks: A Gestalt Game Perspective

In this paper, the problem of seeking optimal distributed resource allocation (DRA) policies on cellular networks in the presence of an unknown malicious adding-edge attacker is investigated. This problem is described as the games of games (GoG) model. Specifically, two subnetwork policymakers constitute a Nash game, while the confrontation between each subnetwork policymaker and the attacker is captured by a Stackelberg game. First, we show that the communication resource allocation of cellular networks based on the Foschini-Miljanic (FM) algorithm can be transformed into a geometric program and be efficiently solved via convex optimization. Second, the upper limit of attack magnitude that can be tolerated by the network is calculated by the corresponding theory, and it is proved that the above geometric programming (GP) framework is solvable within the attack bound, that is, there exists a Gestalt Nash equilibrium (GNE) in our GoG. Third, a heuristic algorithm that iteratively uses GP is proposed to identify the optimal policy profiles of both subnetworks, for which asymptotic convergence is also confirmed. Fourth, a greedy heuristic adding-edge strategy is developed for the attacker to determine the set of the most vulnerable edges. Finally, simulation examples illustrate that the proposed theoretical results are robust and can achieve the GNE. It is verified that the transmission gains and interference gains of all channels are well tuned within a limited budget, despite the existence of malicious attacks. © 2023, CC BY.
