An Estimation Perspective on Breathing Effort Disturbances in Mechanical Ventilation

Estimation of relevant lung parameters and the breathing effort of a ventilated patient is essential to keep track of the patient's clinical condition. The aim of this paper is to investigate the major challenges of estimating the patient's condition with parametric models. The main method is a linear regression framework, where identifiability and persistence of excitation aspects are clearly unraveled. Different approaches for improving estimation accuracy are outlined. As an illustration, one of the solution strategies is implemented, which leads to accurate estimates of the breathing effort and relevant lung parameters.

Filter-Based Land Vehicle Speed Estimation Algorithm using Pseudo Bias Model of Single-Axis Accelerometer

This study presents a filter-based vehicle longitudinal speed estimation algorithm with improved accuracy by estimating the accelerometer bias using only a single-axis accelerometer in the section where the odometer reliability is low. Most vehicles use odometers to obtain speed information because odometers can measure speed with high accuracy under normal driving conditions. However, since the typical odometer has a characteristic that depends on the measured revolutions per minute of the vehicle wheel, if a slip situation occurs in which the wheel slides owing to a sudden start and sudden stop, then the odometer outputs an inaccurate speed measurement. To solve this problem, we redefine the sensor error model of the accelerometer attached to the vehicle and propose a method to estimate the attitude and self-bias component, which are error components that have large effects on the accelerometer, through an adaptive lowpass filter. In addition, we propose an approach to apply the zero-velocity update method to improve the accuracy of the estimated speed information by integrating the error-compensated acceleration value based on the filter. To evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm, an actual vehicle experiment was performed, and the speed estimation results of the odometer disabled area were analyzed. The results confirmed that the accuracy of speed estimation was greatly improved. © ICROS 2022.

Nonlinear Modes as a Tool for Comparing the Mathematical Structure of Dynamic Models of Soft Robots

Continuum soft robots are nonlinear mechanical systems with theoretically infinite degrees of freedom (DoFs) that exhibit complex behaviors. Achieving motor intelligence under dynamic conditions necessitates the development of control-oriented reduced-order models (ROMs), which employ as few DoFs as possible while still accurately capturing the core characteristics of the theoretically infinite-dimensional dynamics. However, there is no quantitative way to measure if the ROM of a soft robot has succeeded in this task. In other fields, like structural dynamics or flexible link robotics, linear normal modes are routinely used to this end. Yet, this theory is not applicable to soft robots due to their nonlinearities. In this work, we propose to use the recent nonlinear extension in modal theory –called eigenmanifolds– as a means to evaluate control-oriented models for soft robots and compare them. To achieve this, we propose three similarity metrics relying on the projection of the nonlinear modes of the system into a task space of interest. We use this approach to compare quantitatively, for the first time, ROMs of increasing order generated under the piecewise constant curvature (PCC) hypothesis with a high-dimensional finite element (FE)-like model of a soft arm. Results show that by increasing the order of the discretization, the eigenmanifolds of the PCC model converge to those of the FE model. © 2024, CC BY.

Due to its high efficiency and energy savings, permanent magnet synchronous motors are frequently utilized in the joints of cooperative robots. Most of these motors are single-stator motors. The predominant issues of the single-stator motor are low torque density and giant torque ripple, which result in inadequate load capability and chattering in the course of operation. This paper proposes a dual-stator motor with a 70 mm outer diameter to solve this problem. The physical model of the dual-stator motor is established for performance analysis and control simulation. The performance analysis of the dual-stator motor, which mainly focuses on the electromagnetic field, is conducted in Ansys Electronics. Simulation of magnetic field oriented control using mathematical model is conducted in Simulink. Under the conditions of 200 rpm (revolutions per minute) and 5 A effective current, the average torque of the motor reaches 4.74 N m, and the torque ripple is only 2.3%. The result proves that the proposed dual-stator motor has larger torque density and smaller torque ripple than the traditional single-stator motor with the same specification. The magnetic field oriented control is used when the motor tracks 200 rpm. The control simulation analysis shows that the overshoot is less than 1%, and the rise time is 0.015 s.

At present, the latest technologies in the field of sensor, computing, and wireless communication technology have allowed the creation of a wide range of new applications in various fields, such as the transportation involved in civil and military operations, intelligence systems, personally used communications, industrial and health care automation. Although the mechanical image of the automobile, since its beginning, does not seem to have changed much, the industrial structure is now converging towards the revolution in advanced automation and information technology. Therefore, the GPS based navigation systems are very common these days such as;parallel parking driving assistance technology, the control system for an adaptive cruise, and warning system for changing the lane. This advanced technology has a lot of applications in improving the infrastructure of the traffic, like the automatic collection of toll taxes, monitoring of vehicles, an early warning system for road accidents, etc. This research work discusses the supporting technologies and advancement for intelligent transportation systems. Later in this paper, it is verified that by improving the efficiency and service flexibilities the energy consumption and total cost in the transportation system can be reduced. © 2021 IEEE.

In this work, we propose a centralized control method based on nonlinear model predictive control to let multiple UAVs manipulate the full pose of an object via cables. At the best of the authors knowledge this is the first method that takes into account the full nonlinear model of the load-UAV system, and ensures all the feasibility constraints concerning the UAV maximumum and minimum thrusts, the collision avoidance between the UAVs, cables and load, and the tautness and maximum tension of the cables. By taking into account the above factors, the proposed control algorithm can fully exploit the performance of UAVs and facilitate the speed of operation. Simulations are conducted to validate the algorithm to achieve fast and safe manipulation of the pose of a rigid-body payload using multiple UAVs. We demonstrate that the computational time of the proposed method is sufficiently small (<100 ms) for UAV teams composed by up to 10 units, which makes it suitable for a huge variety of future industrial applications, such as autonomous building construction and heavy-load transportation.

The relationship between processing parameters, microstructure, and mechanical properties of Al-8.3Fe-1.3V-1.8Si alloy processed by laser powder bed fusion is seldom studied. Therefore, fully dense alloys with two parameters were selected to investigate this key issue. The results show that the alloy with low power and scanning speed (S200) shows fan-shell-shaped melt pools and laser tracks while another (S350) shows a deeper and wider melt pool. Both alloys obtain a heterogeneous microstructure without a secondary phase in melt pool (MP) and a nano-sized phase in melt pool boundary (MPB). The difference between solid-solution strengthening and Orowan strengthening in MP and MPB contributes to the difference in compressive yield strength (S200: 380 ± 14 MPa and S350: 705 ± 16 MPa), and heterogeneous nano-hardness results in different crack behaviours and failure strains. This work indicates that adjusting processing parameters is an effective method to control microstructure and mechanical properties of this alloy. © 2022 The Author(s). Passivity-Based control (PBC) has been successfully used to digitally control a stand-alone voltage source inverter (VSI) associated with the LC filter in recent years. A passivity-based control design methodology for three-phase VSI used in uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems with low output voltage overshoot and quick settling times is proposed in this study. In a range of operating scenarios where linear and nonlinear loads are presented, the PBC controller's settings are designed using the particle swarm optimization (PSO) technique, which eliminates the difficulties of manual tuning and allows the damping parameters to be acquired more rapidly and effectively using MATLAB in online mode. In addition to the easy implementation and efficient computation of the PSO, the optimization tool is used in association with an enhanced passivity control technique, resulting in a decrease in overall total harmonics distortion (THD). The effects of various parameters on power converter performance are explored, and comparative simulation results are shown to demonstrate the value of the proposed passivity-based control design methodology based on the PSO technique.

In the last decades, the renewables market is focused on distributed grids and solutions suitable for private use in households. A low-speed wind turbine based on the Magnus effect is one of the promising technologies in that area. By its construction, for the power management, Magnus effect-based wind turbine requires additional motors to control the rotational speed of the blades. An integrated motor-drive system for Unmanned Autonomous Vehicles (UAVs) matching the requirements in terms of weight, size, rotational speed, and controllability. In this case study, an application of the permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) designed for UAVs in a Magnus effect-based wind turbine prototype is presented. The control system design methodology is presented, and the performance of the system is experimentally evaluated. © 2021 IEEE.

This paper proposes a fully decentralized local electricity market mechanism backboned by a modified version of the Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers (ADMM). Comparing with the state-of-the-art peer-to-peer (P2P) market in local distribution systems, the proposed electricity trading mechanism comprehensively incorporates power network constraints formulated by an Alternating Current (AC) power flow model. In the proposed method, nodal voltages are designed as the only public variables shared among participants. Privacy of each participant is thus sufficiently preserved without exposing the bid data to the others. Meanwhile, the proposed method can also ensure the global optimality of social welfare in electricity transactions. Comprehensive case studies on the IEEE 33-node distribution system are conducted to demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed electricity trading mechanism. © 2022 IEEE.
