A First Course in Feedback, Dynamics and control: Findings from 2019 Online Survey of the International control Community

This paper summarizes the results from a large-scale survey on the content and teaching philosophy of the first, and in many cases the only, control course taken by undergraduate students in engineering and applied sciences around the world. The IFAC Technical Committee on Education developed and administered the survey in 2019. At the time of writing, 201 control professionals have responded to the survey. The majority view is that the first course in control should focus on concepts and avoid excessive mathematical proofs. The responders ranked the depth of coverage of 63 topics commonly found in introductory control texts. Based on the ranking results, a sample curriculum for a first control course is outlined.

The remarkable mechanical properties achieved in CuZr-based complex alloys consisting of, or containing, austenitic B2-CuZr-structured crystallites rely on the B2→B19' martensitic transformation (MT), which results in the well-known transformation-induced plasticity (TRIP) and shape memory effects. However, owing to the anisotropic nature of crystals, the MT and, in turn, the transformation-induced mechanical behaviors essentially depend on the crystal orientation of B2-CuZr, which remains rarely known in the literature. Here, we present a systematic investigation on the crystallographic orientation-dependent MT in B2-CuZr-structured single crystals using micropillar compression tests. Strong anisotropy is revealed, in which, along loading axis, a near--oriented B2 tends to fracture without MT, whereas a near-/-oriented B2 is prone to MT which leads to extensive plasticity. A critical resolved shear stress (CRSS) is thus determined for the first of its kind, demonstrating that the onset of MT is stress-controlled via a {011}B2 lattice shear in which {011}B2 is the shear plane and B2 is the shear direction. On this basis and using an Eshelby theory-based analysis of triaxial stress fields, we further reveal the anisotropic MT behavior of micrometer-sized monocrystalline B2-CuZr spherulites when embedded in a metallic glass matrix;we show the dominant effect of anisotropic MT on the shear-band/microcrack propagation that eventually leads to fracture in such a B2-containing composite material. Our results shed light on the mechanisms of anisotropic MT with or without matrix confinement, and provide a new perspective for understanding the TRIP-enhanced mechanical properties as well as shape memory/superelastic behaviors of B2-structured or B2-containing complex alloys. © 2024, The Authors. Parallel Planning:A New Motion Planning Framework for Autonomous Driving

Motion planning is one of the most significant technologies for autonomous driving. To make motion planning models able to learn from the environment and to deal with emergency situations, a new motion planning framework called as"parallel planning" is proposed in this paper. In order to generate sufficient and various training samples, artificial traffic scenes are firstly constructed based on the knowledge from the reality.A deep planning model which combines a convolutional neural network(CNN) with the Long Short-Term Memory module(LSTM) is developed to make planning decisions in an end-toend mode. This model can learn from both real and artificial traffic scenes and imitate the driving style of human ***, a parallel deep reinforcement learning approach is also presented to improve the robustness of planning model and reduce the error rate. To handle emergency situations, a hybrid generative model including a variational auto-encoder(VAE) and a generative adversarial network(GAN) is utilized to learn from virtual emergencies generated in artificial traffic scenes. While an autonomous vehicle is moving, the hybrid generative model generates multiple video clips in parallel, which correspond to different potential emergency scenarios. Simultaneously, the deep planning model makes planning decisions for both virtual and current real scenes. The final planning decision is determined by analysis of real observations. Leveraging the parallel planning approach, the planner is able to make rational decisions without heavy calculation burden when an emergency occurs.

Super-k: A piecewise linear classifier based on Voronoi tessellations

Voronoi tessellations are used to partition the Euclidean space into polyhedral regions, which are called Voronoi cells. Labeling the Voronoi cells with the class information, we can map any classification problem into a Voronoi tessellation. In this way, the classification problem changes into a query of just finding the enclosing Voronoi cell. In order to accomplish this task, we have developed a new algorithm which generates a labeled Voronoi tessellation that partitions the training data into polyhedral regions and obtains interclass boundaries as an indirect result. It is called Supervised k-Voxels or in short Super-k. We are introducing Super-k as a foundational new algorithm and opening the possibility of a new family of algorithms. In this paper, it is shown via comparisons on certain datasets that the Super-k algorithm has the potential of providing comparable performance of the well-known SVM family of algorithms with less complexity. Since the dominant induction machines and permanent magnet synchronous machines are well-established in the industry, the reluctance machines require more research work and investigation to substitute the conventional technologies. This paper analyzes the synchronous reluctance machines and permanent magnet-assisted synchronous reluctance machines in terms of the effect of permanent magnets in the model and the performance characteristic of the machines. The machines are designed and the parameters are measured. The vector diagrams of the machines and the equivalent circuits of the machines are analyzed. A comparison of the machines in terms of power factor, efficiency, and torque of the machines is provided based on the measurements. The study presents a notable improvement in power factor and efficiency in the case of inserting permanent magnets in the synchronous reluctance machine's rotor.

The paper describes the interaction between Tallinn University of Technology (TalTech, Tallinn, Estonia) and ITMO University (St. Petersburg, Russia) based on recently signed agreement. The purpose of the agreement is to record the intention of TalTech and ITMO University to cooperate on implementing a double master's degree program, which involves confirmation of the master's educational level absorption and the award of master's degree and obtention of two diplomas, and to outline the organizational form, principles and terms of the implementation. The double degree Program is a two-year Master's program of 120 ECTS credit points. Its structure and content meets the requirements that both TalTech and ITMO University have established for their master's programs, in accordance with the government standards. Development and approval of the double degree Program is held by the Parties in accordance with the procedures established by them. This paper describes the procedure of implementation of a double-degree master program in mechatronics engineering.

This paper presents the main faults of brushless DC motors and their diagnostic possibilities. Due to the popularity gain of such devices in the past decade, the maintenance and diagnostic of such machines is getting more important. As the machines are used in various applications, they are often critical parts of devices. Due to this, the unexpected failures of such machines are undesired and are to be avoided. The main faults of the machines are listed, some possibilities of their monitoring and diagnostics have been addressed. The necessity of further study has been pointed out.

Social media is profoundly changing our society with its unprecedented spreading power. Due to the complexity of human behaviors and the diversity of massive messages, the information spreading dynamics are complicated, and the reported mechanisms are different and even controversial. Based on data from mainstream social media platforms, including WeChat, Weibo, and Twitter, cumulatively encompassing a total of 7.45 billion users, we uncover a ubiquitous mechanism that the information spreading dynamics are basically driven by the interplay of social reinforcement and social weakening effects. Accordingly, we propose a concise equation, which, surprisingly, can well describe all the empirical large-scale spreading trajectories. Our theory resolves a number of controversial claims and satisfactorily explains many phenomena previously observed. It also reveals that the highly clustered nature of social networks can lead to rapid and high-frequency information bursts with relatively small coverage per burst. This vital feature enables social media to have a high capacity and diversity for information dissemination, beneficial for its ecological development. © 2025, CC BY.

In order to maintain the excellent condition of the most machines its sub-assemblies have to be constantly checked. One of the frequently used elements is a rolling bearing, what make it a recurrently examined component. Thus, several methods have been developed to identify the bearing faults. The aim of this study is to develop a reliable solution enabling the detection of the rolling bearing defects by the use its audio signal. The paper focuses on the measurements of the acoustic signal generated by a bearing running at high, mid and low speed. A digital signal processing technique and FFT transform is utilized for the features extraction. Then the machine learning methods are used for features selection and classification. Results suggested that this technique can be useful.

The research concentrates on the modernization issues of diesel-electric passenger locomotives TEP70. There is number of TEP70 locomotives in Baltic region that are used very rarely by their direct application but may as well be usable as freight locomotives. The main goal of the study is to change the tractive force of a TEP70 locomotive to be able to transport cargo in the Baltic region. Analysis of TEP70 working principles and load characteristics are presented. Based on the analytical model of locomotive, suggestion to replace the gearbox to increase locomotive pulling capability is proposed. Moreover, the paper presents calculation of the traction effort of TEP70. That kind of calculations are very important for motion planning and it should be done in order to avoid overloading during the working mode of the locomotive.
