Different types of foods are available in grain form, but rice is one of the important and most used cereal grains of Pakistan and all over the world. Quality inspection of rice grain is also important for both local as well as export purpose. It is necessary to propose an automatic solution to perform the quality analysis as well as to distinguish between different classes of rice. Main purpose of this paper is to present an image processing-based solution to classify the different varieties of rice and its quality analysis. An approach based on the combination of principal component analysis and canny edge detection is used for the classification. Quality analysis of rice grain is determined by morphological features of rice grains. These morphological features include eccentricity, major axis length, minor axis length, perimeter, area and size of the grains. Six different varieties of rice are classified and analyzed in this paper. A database is trained by feeding the 100 images of each variety of rice grains. Classification and quality analysis is done by comparing the sample image with database image. Canny edge detector is applied to detect the edges of rice grains. Eigen values and Eigen vectors are calculated on the basis of morphological features. Then by applying the PCA, different varieties of rice are classified by comparing the sample image with a database. Results obtained in terms of classification and quality analysis are 92.3% and 89.5% respectively. Proposed system can work well within minimum time and low cost.

This paper presents the optimal formation control for a group of quadrotors based on particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm. This is motivated by the conventional approaches that still involve a certain degree of trial and error approach which may not give the optimal performance. The parameter optimization using PSO utilizes the linear quadrotor model obtained from feedback linearization technique. Simulations are conducted on the parameter optimization, followed by implementation of the optimal parameters for formation control of multiple quadrotors. The results show the effectiveness of the proposed technique. © Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2017.

Identifying position-dependent mechanical systems: A modal approach with applications to wafer stage control

Increasingly stringent performance requirements for motion control necessitate the use of increasingly detailed models of the system behavior. Motion systems inherently move, therefore, spatio-temporal models of the flexible dynamics are essential. In this paper, a two-step approach for the identification of the spatio-temporal behavior of mechanical systems is developed and applied to a prototype industrial wafer stage with a lightweight design for fast and highly accurate positioning. The proposed approach exploits a modal modeling framework and combines recently developed powerful linear time invariant (LTI) identification tools with a spline-based mode-shape interpolation approach to estimate the spatial system behavior. The experimental results for the wafer stage application confirm the suitability of the proposed approach for the identification of complex position-dependent mechanical systems, and show the pivotal role of the obtained models for improved motion control performance. Loss in crop production gives a significant impact to food security. The decreasing in crops production has produced imbalance between the food demand of world population and the global agriculture output. There are many factors that may affect agriculture productivity. Abiotic and biotic constrains including water scarcity, poor soils, unsuitable temperatures and the pests, diseases and weeds attacking crops are among the causes that reduce the productivity of food crops. Hence, these lead to the low efficiencies of input use, suppressed crop output, and ultimately reduced food security. The plant pests, diseases and weeds have given significant impact on plant health and causing a great loss in crop production. Therefore, this paper presents a comprehensive review from the available literatures to provide understanding of the role of geospatial technology in combating plant pests and diseases outbreaks. Geospatial data and technologies including Geographic Information System, remote sensing and Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) and have been used in collecting, mapping, analysing the distribution and predicting the events. The geospatial technology has been used from the early tasks of surveying the status of crop health until forecasting when the disease likely to be occurred. Although many big challenges are facing by the global and local agricultures to produce good outputs and to secure the world food population, however the rich of geospatial data and advancement of technologies have playing certain roles, particularly assisting the decision makers in forming strategies for combating various pests and diseases that affecting plant health and food crops. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Dismantling strategy for capacitors placed on printed circuits boards: challenges and preliminary results

The present paper describes the challenges and preliminary results obtained during the design and implementation of a disassembly system for capacitors placed on printed circuits boards. This research is included in an attempt to reduce the impact of the electronic waste. The proposed architecture includes a six axis multipurpose industrial robot, dedicated sensors and a custom built tool. An originally designed rotary tool, with a specific type of drill bit, was used to dismantle each capacitor on the board. A sensor triggers the tool for the drill rotation when the perforation is accomplished accordingly, so that the friction force is big enough to initiate the dismantling procedure. Using the rotation movement of the drill, at a calculated number of rotations, the capacitors are successfully dismantled from the printed circuits board. An artificial vision system composed from a stereo camera and an image-processing algorithm, provides data with regard to the position of each capacitor on the printed circuit board. A vacuum cleaner was integrated in the scheme to recover the capacitors after dismantling. The scheme design was perpetually optimized using dedicated simulation software. Also, preliminary results obtained on the physical system underline the potential advantages of the proposed approach.

High throughput requirements on high-precision manufacturing systems lead to a situation where the flexible dynamics hamper the performance at the positions of interest. Since these points are typically not measured directly, high performance local control of measured positions may lead to deteriorated performance due to internal deformations. A possible solution is to employ a control strategy which ensures that the desired rigid body motion is achieved, without exciting the parasitic flexible dynamics. In this paper, a feedforward controller design procedure is developed that achieves this type of global performance, which in turn leads to increased performance at the unmeasured positions of interest. The proposed method is applied to an experimental wafer stage showing that the proposed approach indeed leads to superior results with respect to the traditional local control approach. © 2017

A pressure servo controller for pneumatic muscle actuators (PMAs) is presented and tested in three test scenarios. Unlike most previous non-linear control approaches, the current contribution demonstrated that a linear controller design becomes feasible after a slight reformulation of the non-linear plant dynamics. The controller is designed by pole placement in the discrete-time domain. It is demonstrated experimentally that the controller solves the control task and compensates pneumatic cross-coupling effects between different PMAs connected to a shared kinematic structure with an additional disturbance cancellation. When the initial PMA volume is kept constant, a closed-loop cutoff frequency of about 6 Hz is achieved. Beyond that, a sine pressure trajectory with 1 Hz is tracked successfully at time-varying volume, and the pressure changes triggered by volume changes are significantly reduced. The controller is easy to implement and therefore suitable to run on low-cost embedded hardware.

Over recent years, the use of Web 2.0 social platforms and geo-crowdsourcing in disaster management and emergency responses has become common. The emergence of various communication channels has led to abundance of information, but it cannot be used directly by the first responders and flood volunteers in their responses for several reasons. This paper proposes a 2-way geo-crowdsourcing framework to centralise the flood relief distribution channels using mobile geolocation technology. The framework is anticipated to be suitable for use by flood volunteers, including NGOs, private agencies and ad-hoc volunteers, to systematically distribute the relief items to the victims. The lessons learnt from the NGOs previously involved in the volunteer efforts in the 2014 Kelantan massive flood were discussed and become the basis of this framework. The framework could be applied for other studies that seek to support a 2-way communication between netizens and the authorities using a geo-crowdsourcing platform.
