Along with the fast development of battery technologies and growing criticism on heavy air pollution caused by traditional automobiles, electric vehicles (EV) draw more attention in these years. The inconvenience of battery charging is the main barrier to the widespread use of EVs, and the EV battery-swapping technology is a promising method to assist overcoming this difficulty eventually because of its flexibility. In this paper, a battery schedule framework is studied to dispatch batteries between battery charging stations (BCS) and battery swapping stations (BSS) efficiently. A two-direction battery dispatch model to reduce the transportation cost is established and solved by PSO method. Moreover, considering the serving ability limitations, the K-means clustering algorithm is utilized to pre-partition the BCS and BSS to make the battery dispatch more efficient and effective. The proposed methods is finally verified by an urban battery logistics case. © 2016 IEEE.

In this paper, we study Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) for future Smart Cities. We propose a new type of Automated Highway System (AHS), which optimizes both total consumed energy and travel time. We build on our previous work by adapting it to ITS as a new class of games, which is Mean Field (MF) Multilayer Stackelberg Games (MSG). In this game model, a leader (control Center) imposes its fixed strategy on all followers (Vehicles). However, the control Center cannot manipulate the vehicles directly. Instead, sub-leaders (Road Links) link up vehicles to the control center as an intermediary layer. Therefore, vehicles of each road link are weakly coupled through a Mean Field term, which affects the vehicles' individual costs. The main novelty in this paper is to consider the Mean Field Game for Automated Highway Systems in a Smart City. Because of the fact that there are no fully autonomous highways in cities, implementing new type the algorithm on ITS is nearly impossible for real life scenarios. Hence we have developed our highly realistic simulation environment, Istanbul Technical University City Transportation Simulator (ITUCiTSim) program. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method on ITUCiTSim.

Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) are in limelight these days. The advent of MOOCs is bringing about a revolution in teaching and learning methods. Using current online courses, anyone from anywhere in the world can learn anything even from Nobel laureates. Regardless of their advantages, small number of people from developing countries like Pakistan access MOOCs. In Pakistan, constraints like low literacy rate and lack of infrastructure hinder growth of online education. This paper presents endeavors for implementing online courses in Pakistan. Our survey results also highlight the potential of MOOCs in Pakistan and discuss major problems of higher education.

In this paper, we proposed a detection method for the old photovoltaic modules. The lifespan of general photovoltaic module is 20 years and PV modules installed since the 1990s is caused a failure because the PV module is a lifespan. So, way to detect such failure of PV modules is required. The proposed detection method has advantages that is easier and cheaper than the conventional method. To verify the validity of the proposed method, we carry out a computer-aided simulation. © 2016 IEEE.

Closed-loop schemes for position and sway control of a gantry crane system

This paper presents the investigation into the performance of Lyapunov pole placement (LPP), linear quadratic regulator (LQR) and proportional-integral-derivative (PID) control schemes for payload sway control and trolley position tracking of a gantry crane system. A 2D gantry crane system is considered. The nonlinear model of the system is derived using the Lagrangian energy equation and then linearized using Taylor’s series expansion. To investigate the performances of the designed controllers, a unit step input as a reference perturbation is applied to the controllers. MATLAB simulation results of the responses are analysed in time domain. The response time specifications of the trolley position, level of payload sway reduction, and robustness to parameter variation and uncertainties are used to assess the performances of the controllers. © 2016, UK Simulation Society. An unconditionally stable finite difference scheme for systems whose dynamics are described by a fourth-order partial differential equation is developed using a regular hexagonal grid. The scheme is motivated by the well-known Crank-Nicolson discretization that was originally developed for second-order systems and it is used in this paper to develop a discrete in time and space model of a deformable mirror as a basis for control law design. As one example, the resulting model is used for iterative learning control law design and supporting numerical simulations are given. © 2017

Near Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRs) has been applied as analytical tool in numerous field of study due to its ability in noninvasive application. This paper proposed a non-invasive method in early screening of leukemia using NIRS. In this method NIRs is applied directly at human fingertip for spectral data acquisition and standard blood test procedure which involve blood draw is done for laboratory data acquisition. The prediction model will compared the spectral data with laboratory data for validation. The performance of PCR and PLSR prediction model is compared for the selection of model with high accuracy level. PLSR shows a better performance compared to PCR.

Tenderness is one of the quality that will affect consumer perception in meat. Traditionally, meat quality grading was done destructively by the human graders destructive measurements. Destructive measurement caused less accurate results, time-consuming and costly. Hence, a low cost, fast, reliable and non-destructive technique which is Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) is required in order to gain accurate results in tenderness prediction. The combination of visible and shortwave near infrared (VIS-SWNIR) spectrometer and principal component regression (PCR) to assess the quality attribute of raw broiler meat texture (shear force value (kg)) was investigated. Two wavelength regions: visible and shortwave 662- 1005 nm and shortwave 700-1005 nm. Absorbance spectra was pre-processed using the optimal Savitzky-Golay smoothing mode which was the 1st order derivative, 2nd degree polynomial and 31 filter points to remove the baseline shift effect. Potential outliers were identified through externally studentised residual approach. The PCR model were trained with 90 samples in calibration and validated with 44 samples in prediction datasets. From the PCR analysis, correlation coefficient of calibration (RC), the root mean square calibration (RMSEC), correlation coefficient of prediction (RP) and the root mean square prediction (RMSEP) of visible and shortwave (662-1005 nm) with 4 principal components were 0.4645, 0.0898, 0.4231 and 0.0945. The predicted results can be improved by applying the 2nd order derivative and the non-linear model.

This paper considered two main issues. First is about the complete mathematical modelling and Fixed-Structure ∞ robust controller design for couple tank system in frequency domain. This system is nonlinear and classical Proportional Integral Derivative (PID) controller may not give appropriate performance. Although classical PID controllers are more practical due their simplicity and linearity but they have some limitations. Especially in case of nonlinear system or small variations in parameters, they may not give desired transient specification. The proposed controller is a robust controller which contains a fixed structure and fixed order, and its parameters are optimized using non smooth H ∞ optimization in frequency domain. Also Fixed-Structure H ∞ controller also gives satisfied performance in case of parameters variation. Couple tank system is widely used in industry. For example its most important applications are water purification, effluent treatment, dairy filtration, chemical processing and also this system is used in pharmaceutical industry. Actuator saturation is a major nonlinearity that may exist in couple tank systems. And this nonlinearity may lead to performance degradation or instability of controller and whole system. This problem is known as integral windup and to deal this problem, an Anti-Integral Windup PID control strategy is introduced in the second part of this paper.
