Mechanism of material removal and chip formation of alumina dispersion strengthened copper in micro-milling

Alumina dispersion-strengthened copper (ADSC), as a representative particle-reinforced metal matrix composite (PRMMC), exhibits superior wear resistance and high strength. However, challenges arise in their processability because of the non-uniform material properties of biphasic materials. In particular, limited research has been conducted on the reinforcement mechanism and behavior of particles during material cutting deformation of PRMMC with nanoscale particles. In this study, a cutting simulation model for ADSC was established, separating the nanoscale reinforcement particles from the matrix. This model was utilized to analyze the interactions among particles, matrix, and tool during the cutting process, providing insights into chip formation and fracture. Particles with high strength and hardness are more prone to storing stress concentrations, anchoring themselves at grain boundaries to resist grain fibration, thereby influencing the stress distribution in the cutting deformation zone. Stress concentration around the particles leads to the formation of discontinuous chips, indicating that ADSC with high-volume fractions of particle (VFP) exhibits low cutting continuity, which is consistent with the results of cutting experiments. The tool tip that is in contact with particles experiences stress concentration, thereby accelerating tool wear. Cutting ADSC with 1.1% VFP results in tool blunting, which increases the radius of cutting edge from 0.5 to 1.9 μm, accompanied with remarkable coating delamination and wear. Simulation results indicate that the minimum uncut chip thickness increases from 0.04 to 0.07 μm as VFP increases from 0.3% to 1.1%. In conjunction with scratch experiments, MUCT increases with the augmentation of VFP. Scanning-sonar Image Matching Algorithm Using Overlapping Region Detection and ICP

This paper describes a method for matching scanning-sonar images using the iterative closest point (ICP) algorithm. In the case of scanning-sonar, data cannot be taken while moving, resulting in only a partial overlap between the datasets. Furthermore, the ICP algorithm is based on point-cloud data, requiring three-dimensional data. However, scanning-sonar images are two-dimensional data. These issues make it challenging to match scanning-sonar images using the ICP algorithm. This study proposes a three-step method as a solution to address the challenge. First, the overlapping area between two scanning-sonar images is estimated using the localization result from a navigation algorithm. Second, a method is proposed for transforming two-dimensional image coordinates and pixel intensities into three-dimensional data. Lastly, feature points are extracted from noisy data using histograms. The proposed algorithm was validated using scanning-sonar images collected from a real-sea environment. The experimental results showed that the proposed algorithm successfully matches scanning-sonar images. © ICROS 2024.

Because each mode has distinct optimization requirements, optimizing the economic performance of microgrids (MGs) in grid-connected and islanded modes presents unique issues. This research offers a novel methodology to overcome this difficulty and better use renewable resources while satisfying the growing needs of the energy market. To maximize the MG’s performance, this approach combines fuzzy control, machine learning, and artificial intelligence with soft switching technologies. Two predictive rules are used in the design of the control system to handle the particular requirements of either the grid-connected or islanded mode depending on the MG’s operational condition. The study’s findings demonstrate that, in addition to lowering energy expenses in large commercial buildings, the suggested strategy optimizes the use of renewable energy sources and storage capacity in a range of network scenarios. This method offers more flexibility in response to network changes and greatly improves energy efficiency. © The Author(s) 2025.

Effect of planet pin position errors on the fatigue reliability of large aviation planetary systems

Optimal Parameter Estimation for Topological Descriptor Based Sonar Image Matching in Autonomous Underwater Robots

This paper describes a methodology for estimating optimal parameter values that are crucial for matching sonar images using topological descriptors. In previous studies, parameter settings for image matching were often reliant on empirical judgments of researchers, yielding suboptimal matching performance. Therefore, this study proposes an optimal parameter estimation method based on inertial navigation information. By matching across various parameter combinations and assessing the matching results using inertial navigation information, the parameters are estimated via numerical analysis. The effectiveness of the proposed method is validated by scanning sonar images acquired from real sea environments. The application of this method notably enhances the performance of the sonar image-matching algorithm based on topological descriptors. © ICROS 2024.

Heading Bias Estimation Algorithm for Autonomous Underwater Vehicles Considering Angular Accuracy

This paper describes a method for estimating the heading bias to improve the performance of the navigation algorithm for AUVs (Autonomous Underwater Vehicles). Various studies have been conducted to estimate heading bias, including approaches that use position data obtained from sensors providing absolute position information, such as the GPS (Global Positioning system), along with position data estimated through navigation algorithms. However, these studies have estimated bias without considering that the reliability of each GPS position varies depending on its relative location. Therefore, this paper proposes a method for heading bias estimation that involves estimating angular accuracy based on the distance between the initial position of bias estimation and GPS positions, GPS accuracy, and distance-to-angle conversion. Based on the estimated angular accuracy, GPS positions for bias estimation are selected, and the heading bias is estimated by applying optimization techniques to these selected GPS positions and their associated navigation-estimated positions. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is validated through experiments using sensor datasets acquired from real sea experiments. © ICROS 2025.

Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV)-powered 5G/6G networks integrated with rechargeable wireless sensor networks (RWSNs) offer promising solutions for extending system lifetime, collecting data, and providing computing services and power to sensor nodes (SNs). UAVs offer significant advantages, including exceptional mobility, cost-effective deployment, and the ability to be easily reprogrammed for a wide range of missions. However, the limited onboard power capacity of UAVs, coupled with the lack of dynamic and intelligent charging station (CS) management and inefficient path planning, can lead to SN failure in dynamic mobile environments. To address these challenges, we propose an energy-efficient laser-charged UAV (LCU)-enabled RWSN environment, wherein UAVs, powered by laser beams from ground-based stations, provide services, collect data, and transfer energy to SNs. We formulate a joint optimization problem involving power allocation, dynamic charging strategy (DCS), and path planning to minimize task completion time and sensor node death time. Given the NP-hard nature of the problem, we employ a stochastic game model based on a Markov decision process (MDP) for its solution. To solve this problem, we propose a deep reinforcement learning (DRL) based algorithm that enables real-time charging scheduling decisions while optimizing network performance. We introduce a multi-agent double deep Q-network (MA-DDQN) model to determine the optimal trajectories for all UAVs in large and complex environments. Simulation results demonstrate that the MA-DDQN approach outperforms state-of-the-art techniques, showing significant improvements in terms of average delay, energy consumption, and task completion time. © 2004-2012 IEEE.

Performance Enhancement Technique for Position-based Alignment Algorithm in AUV’s Navigation

This paper presents an improved approach for in-motion alignment based on position estimation to accurately determine the initial heading-angle of an autonomous underwater vehicle. The existing method for in-motion alignment is highly sensitive to errors from GPS reception and the localization algorithm, particularly in the vicinity of the starting point. Consequently, compensation values for the heading-angle obtained in the vicinity of the starting point are unreliable. To address this issue, this study analyzes the variance of the heading-angle compensation during the early stage of the alignment process, aiming to assess the reliability of the compensation value. By using variance as a criterion, the algorithm determines whether to continue the execution of the early stage in the alignment process. If the variance falls below a certain threshold, the algorithm calculates the correction value of the final heading-angle based on each correction value. The proposed algorithm is validated through practical experiments using sensor data collected from real-sea environments. The experimental results demonstrate an average improvement of 50.48% in localization performance with respect to the existing algorithm. Therefore, the proposed algorithm enhances the performance of the in-motion alignment algorithm. © ICROS 2023.
