The compositional design of metallic glasses(MGs)is a long-standing issue in materials science and ***,traditional experimental approaches based on empirical rules are time consuming with a low *** this work,we successfully developed a hybrid machine learning(ML)model to address this fundamental issue based on a database containing~5000 different compositions of metallic glasses(either bulk or ribbon)reported since *** the prior works relying on empirical parameters for featurization of data,we designed modeling guided data descriptors in line with the recent theoretical models on amorphization in chemically complex alloys for the development of the hybrid classification-regression ML *** hybrid ML modeling was validated both numerically and *** importantly,it enabled the discovery of MGs(either bulk or ribbon)through the ML-aided deep search of a multitude of quaternary to scenery alloy *** computational framework herein established is expected to accelerate the design of MG compositions and expand their applications by probing the complex and multi-dimensional compositional space that has never been explored before.

This paper presents the study of different grouser shapes on the performance of the assistive grouser wheel travelling on a flat surface loose soil terrain. This work is an extension from our previous work exploring the rover wheel assistive grouser angle of attack effects on traction force in soft terrain. Therefore, a new experiment involving the different grouser shapes on the assistive grouser wheel must be conducted to comprehend the interactions between the grouser and loose soil. From observation, the bulldozing effect of the assistive grouser is also influenced by the grouser shapes. Further understanding of the soil flow also effect of the grouser shape design in general. Hence, we have developed 4 different grouser shapes to be attached to the single wheel rover testbed to evaluate the effects of the shape to the performance of the assistive grouser wheel on a 0-degree slope loose soil surface. The grouser shapes consisted of Inverse Parallel, C-Shape, Inverse C-Shape and Inverse Chevron Shape. The average total traction force and current consumption was examined. It was observed during the grouser entering the sand surface, the sand piled up onto the grouser surface effecting the value of average total traction force. This was caused by surface area of the grouser. The more surface area of the assistive grouser, the more traction force generated to push the wheel forward. Based on the experimental results, it was concluded that Inverse Parallel is the optimal grouser design for use as assistive grouser in wheeled rover on soft sand, as it has the lowest surface area and the lowest average total traction force. However, Inverse Chevron generated the least current consumption by the half-wheel rover. These results indicate that the traction force of the assistive grouser is not affected by shape, but the width and depth of the assistive grouser.

Rising in popularity of electric vehicles on the roads has created several challenges. Accidents remain one of the most serious road accidents due to which the high-voltage batteries in electric vehicles can lead to fire or even instant death of the passenger(s). Autonomous Emergency Braking system (AEBS) was developed to solve braking problems associated with ABS. However, the system is designed to notify the driver rather than act on it, so there is always a high chance that AEBS continually causes problems when driving in close proximity. In addition, AEBS is only intended for vehicles with low speeds of around 70 km/h. The purpose of this paper is to present the development of a fuzzy intelligent adaptive autonomous servo-electromagnetic braking system (ASEBS) for both close-range driving and high-speed electric vehicles to avoid or mitigate a collision without driver reaction. An intelligent fuzzy logic algorithm was introduced to automatically brake the vehicle regardless of its operating speed and vehicle-to-object (V20) distance to prevent or mitigate a collision. An intelligent fuzzy logic controller controls the power flow to the servo-electromagnetic drive to provide vehicle deceleration and emergency stop. A laboratory pilot model of ASEBS with a double drive has been developed. The ASEBS intelligent fuzzy logic controller has been tested under uniform deceleration and emergency braking of a vehicle, both when driving in close proximity and high speed.

A lunar regolith in-situ analysis payload deploying a mass spectrometer is proposed to exactly detect the water ice of the South Pole of the moon for China future lunar exploration missions. In order to realize the goal, an airtight heating furnace for volatile extraction from lunar regolith is desired. In this paper, sealing methods for lunar regolith volatile in heating furnace to future proposed in-situ sampling and analysis of lunar samples were investigated based on power requirements, furnace closing accuracy requirements, dust tolerance and operation in the Lunar environment. Methods implemented include a balanced metal hollow ring seal, a double channel ferrule tab ring radial seal and a spring energized seal. Comparing the performance of sealing methods under the above conditions, a spring energized seal is selected as the heating furnace seal. The materials and structure of the seal are designed based on the rigidity requirements, leakage rate requirements and working environment requirements. In order to test the sealing performance of seals after repeated sealing in high and low temperature environments, a seal leak detection system was designed. The test results indicate that the seal can meet the sealing performance requirements after repeated sealing at various temperatures. © 2023 IEEE.

This publication is a part of a series of research outcomes that are documented to enrich academic findings on new knowledge development for public engagement. The Range Extender was developed some years ago to fulfill new demand for electric vehicles that produce fewer pollutants to the environment, while the capacity of a battery is still limited to the range of energy that vehicles use to operate. Utilizing a Gas Engine has been decided to have less pressure on the combustion chamber and even less exhaust gas compared to the existing gasoline and diesel engines so that more light material can be used to produce such type of energy generation while the power and torque comparably similar. Final gas-engine development is to achieve not only a certain target of power generation conversion but also more compact dimension and less weight so that Range Extender can be manufactured for commercial purposes. © 2022 IEEE.

Vehicular ad hoc networks(VANETs)provide intelligent navigation and efficient route management,resulting in time savings and cost reductions in the transportation ***,the exchange of beacons and messages over public channels among vehicles and roadside units renders these networks vulnerable to numerous attacks and privacy *** address these challenges,several privacy and security preservation protocols based on blockchain and public key cryptography have been proposed ***,most of these schemes are limited by a long execution time and massive communication costs,which make them inefficient for on-board units(OBUs).Additionally,some of them are still susceptible to many *** such,this study presents a novel protocol based on the fusion of elliptic curve cryptography(ECC)and bilinear pairing(BP)*** formal security analysis is accomplished using the Burrows–Abadi–Needham(BAN)logic,demonstrating that our scheme is verifiably *** proposed scheme’s informal security assessment also shows that it provides salient security features,such as non-repudiation,anonymity,and ***,the scheme is shown to be resilient against attacks,such as packet replays,forgeries,message falsifications,and *** the performance perspective,this protocol yields a 37.88%reduction in communication overheads and a 44.44%improvement in the supported security ***,the proposed scheme can be deployed in VANETs to provide robust security at low overheads.

Linear actuators, implemented as closed hydraulic systems, without external piping, are a state of the art drive concept, see (Gannon, 2017). Collecting data, used to train a condition monitoring (CM) for such drives, running 24/7, is cumbersome or even not possible. To gain training data, containing valid and invalid system states, we developed a simulation model, consisting of the most relevant physical effects. The simulated data are evaluated by a one-step feature approach and additionally with a two-step approach using two less complex fault state separation methods. In the end, the two-step method showed to be slightly better. The condition monitoring is not only used to recognize, but also to distinguish between accumulator and pump faults. © 2022 Prognostics and Health Management Society. All rights reserved.

Autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) perform tasks in various industrial applications to enhance productivity and reduce labor costs. To ensure the safety of humans sharing spaces with robots in operation, most AMRs use visual sensors to avoid collision by detecting humans and obstacles. However, when humans are outside the robot’s field of vision, the robot should mitigate the risk of collision by sensing humans’ presence before they enter the robot’s visual range. In this study, we propose a non-line-of-sight sound source localization algorithm that can be applied to collision avoidance for AMRs. The range of human detection for robots can be increased using auditory sensors. To localize the position of a human in a non-line-of-sight area, such as behind a corner of a corridor, we use direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation of reflection sounds and the ray tracing method. Performance evaluations in real life were performed to verify the possibility of its implementation in practical scenes.

At geothermal power plants has a problem that the large-diameter steel pipe is blocked by solid material of hot spring water's components, called for “hot spring scale”. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a method for measuring the thickness of hot spring scale from the outside of large-diameter steel pipe. In this paper, we investigated a non-contact inspection method that uses electromagnetic force vibration to measure the thickness of hot spring scale from the outside of a steel pipe. In addition, the proposed inspection method was evaluated by comparing electromagnetic force and displacement analysis using the 3-D finite element method (FEM), and verification experiments.
