Experimental study on the lift off speed and load capacity of compliant aerodynamic foil journal air bearings

The test rig was established on the basis of exploiting foil air bearings to test the static and dynamic performances of new compliant aerodynamic foil air bearings. The experiments were performed to identify the lift off speed and load capacity of foil journal air bearings. The lift off speed of foil journal air bearing was analyzed through two methods: friction torque between the surface of rotor and bearing, and the spectrum of radial displacement response. The results of experiments shows that the friction torque reduces and reaches a steady value gradually after lift off because of rub-impact minishing. The spectrum figure is regular and there only appears larger components of low multiple working frequencies. The components of high multiple working frequencies and other frequencies are very small. The lift off speed of foil journal air bearing obtained from these two methods is basically consistent. In terms of load capacity, the eccentricity between the center of rotor and air bearing increases as the load acting on bearing increases. Under the same load, the eccentricity during offloading is larger than that of loading because there is energy loss during offloading due to foil elastic deformation.

The hit rate is affected by the shooting impact of the human-rifle system. The impact response of the human-rifle system is determined mainly by the geometrical parameters and contact boundary conditions. In this study, the height and weight of the considered human model are 170 cm and 60 kg, as these parameters mirror 50 per cent of Korean males in their twenties. The rifle model is applied on the K-2. The impact path analysis of three typical shooting postures: the standing, kneeling and prone shooting postures is performed with experimental impulse-time history during a shooting test. The biomechanical response such as impact transfer path, force history and displacement history are investigated.

There are lots of attempts in automotive field to supersede mechanical parts with electrical ones owing to increasing needs of drivers' safety, comfort and convenience as well as recent tightened environmental regulation. In addition, continuous improvements of semiconductor technology make it speed up to use electric components instead of conventional mechanical and hydraulic ones. In accordance with these tendencies, the demand of electric power and energy used in vehicle has been increasing steadily, and it will cause overburden of conventional 14 V power generation and distribution system. A research on higher voltage system started in early 1990s and 42 V power system has been introduced for a future automotive power-net. In this paper, technical trend in energy storage system which implies one of the key technologies to implement 42 V power-net is reviewed, and development results of the improved energy storage system consisted of ultracapacitor, battery and management controllers are presented

The roundness error and rotation motion error of the least square center of measured section are separated by applying the roundness error separation principle based on the three-point method. Furthermore, the relationship between the pure rotation motion error and the initial position(linear eccentricity) of the least square center of measured section is described. The mathematical expression for separating the pure rotation motion error is put forward, in which the orthogonality of the trigonometric function and the above-obtained relationship is used. The experimental result indicates that the precision measurement of the radial rotation motion error of the gyro-axle can be achieved by three-point method.

This paper deals with the development of an extended Kalman filter(EKF) algorithm for the localization of underwater mining vehicles with sensor time delay. To develop the EKF algorithm, we use a kinematic model including the inner/outer track slips and the slip angle for the vehicle. For the experimental verification, a scale down tracked vehicle is run in air on a soil bin containing cohesive soil of Bentonite-water mixture. The measurements include the inner and outer wheel speeds from encoders, the heading angle from a compass sensor and a fiber optic rate gyro, and x and y coordinate position values from a vision system. The vision sensor replaces the LBL(Long Base Line) sonar system used in the real underwater positioning situations. Artificial noise signals mimicking the real LBL noise signal are added to the vision sensor information. Also, to simulate the LBL sensor time delay, the vision output data are delayed. Experimental results show the effectiveness of the EKF algorithm in rejecting the sensor measurements noise and sensor time delay effect. This paper describes the application of real time vision system for dynamic tracking of moving objects, using image motion. The study encompasses experimental development of an Intelligent system that works in ordinary light and is capable of tracking moving objects with unpredictable motion. In this research the task of mobile target tracking using a pan-and-tilt camera is considered with motion-based dynamic target tracking to deal with complex targets (shape and motion pattern unknown). We propose a method based on retrieving the target position in the image from its estimated motion. Our proposed method is based on obtaining a desired 2-D motion field in the image sequence. In this study we link variations of visual features linearly to the camera velocity. Stereovision technique is used to calculate the maximum angular displacement to retrieve the object position in image and to get the direction of motion of the object. The results are obtained in a real time test environment and are discussed. We developed the program in C++ language for linking all the algorithms in one chain. The complete target tracking algorithm works in a real time mode and can be utilized for a number of applications. © 2005 IEEE.

Recently the bond strength of composite resin to tooth has received attention from researchers of dental materials. Limitations imposed by the biological substrate, such as the size of the specimen, fostered the development of a tensile test with small dimensions. Due to the reduced size of the specimens, the test is called microtensile test. The specialized literature has not presented standards for the test parameters and the relatively large scatter of published bond strength data probably reflects the lack of standards for the test parameters. The objective of this study is to evaluate how specimen geometry and loading conditions affect the estimation of bond strength. A numerical simulation of the test using a Finite Element Model was performed to determine the associated variations on the stress field imposed by variations in the geometry of the specimen and loading conditions. The Finite Element pre-processing and post-processing was performed on Patran® and the Finite Element processing was performed on Marc®. Results from numerical simulations show that geometrical parameters and loading conditions have a significant influence on the stress field. Some suggestions of standards for the microtensile test considering the non-uniform stress field are presented. Copyright © 2005 by ABCM.

For a growing range of optical measurement task, like gap measurement in automotive industry, traditional triangulation sensors have several disadvantages due to the fact that the measurement result is dependent on the orientation of the sensor because of the non rotational symmetry of the optics. Consequently a design method was proposed in [1] for a new class of rotationally symmetric triangulation sensors. Such designs can be realized with aspheric reflection optics and area detectors, such as CCD or CMOS. The optics of the sensor can be extended by an imaging optics which allows at the same time image capturing and distance measurement. In this paper we show measurement results of the first mockup. This system is based on an optical system of one part manufactured by commercially available diamond turning. The layout of the optical system for distance measurement consists of two reflecting aspheric surfaces. We also present approaches and first results on the algorithm for highly accurate evaluation of the captured data. © 2005 IEEE.

A robust-fusion optic fiber sensor technology of proximity distance and orientation integration is studied in this paper. A novel optic fiber sensing head with redundant information, which can measure distance and orientation in any pose as well as compensate fluctuation caused by changing parameters such as surface reflectivity, light intensity and characteristic shifting from photoelectric-converter device, is proposed. The implement method of sensor network compensation is introduced. An improved BP network arithmetic, which can enhance the dynamic characteristic and measurement accuracy of the sensing system, is presented. To speed up the convergence rate of BP network training, GA -BP training method is applied. An intelligent signal detecting and processing system based on DSP is designed, the strong data processing ability of DSP makes the system hardware structure simplified. The method of moderate output light power control is put forward for enlarging the measuring range. Experiment result shows that robust-fusion optic fiber proximity sensor system has the distance measuring range of 0.1-19.9mm and the orientation measuring range of 0-25°. The measuring time of each point is 92.5ms.
