Recently, many corporations have applied CMM, SPICE or other software process maturity models to developing software products. These models are recommended to change from qualitative process management to quantitative management as they reach a certain level of maturity. Quantitative process management is possible only when reliable data exist. If quantitative process management are conducted when data’s reliability are not ensured, adverse effects can be caused by the false management activities. That is why so many methods have been studied to analyze reliability of collected data. Most of them, however, are analysis methods for already collected data. Therefore, if the analysis finds that the existing data are not reliable, the data should be abandoned and new data be collected again, causing need to consume much time and effort. Therefore, as a way to secure reliability of data to be used for quantitative process management when they are input in the first place, this paper suggests a method applying the second level meta game of non-cooperative, bimatrix games to collecting data for quantitative measurement.

The shot based clustering and retrieval is very important for video database organization and access. We can take advantage of semantic clustering to enhance the performance of traditional content-based video retrieval. In this paper, text feature and color feature are first extracted directly from shots. Subsequently, a two-level hierarchical clustering structure that provides indexing scheme for retrieval is constructed by incorporating text and color features. The top level is clustered by text features while the bottom level is clustered by color features. The constructed structure is then used for the cluster-based retrieval. The effectiveness and efficiency of our approach are demonstrated by the experimental results in retrieving and ranking similar video shots.

The DC motor of a vehicle can cause noise and vibration due to high-speed revolution, which can make a driver feel uncomfortable. There have been various studies that attempted to solve these problems, focusing mostly on the causes of noise and vibration and the means of preventing them. It has been suggested that the noise of a DC motor may be primarily due to the interaction between the brush and the commutator. Brush noise, which is the most common noise in DC motors, results from the bouncing of the brush on the surface of the commutator, the fluctuation of friction between the brush and the commutator, and the impact on the brush when passing over the slots of the commutator. Based on noise tests, one of the most important design parameters was shown to be the roundness of the commutator. As the DC motor is used, the roundness of the commutator becomes bigger, with subsequent increases in the level of brush noise and vibration. There must be a threshold in order to prevent the brush noise from getting worse. The CAE methodology is more efficient than a real test for the purpose of looking for various design parameters to maintain the roundness of the commutator, In this study, a design process for reducing brush noise is presented with the use of a computer model. The design parameters to reduce the brush noise and vibration were proposed using FEM. The design parameters were used to reduce the noise and vibration of a DC motor and were verified using the test results of a fan DC motor in a vehicle. This method may be applicable to various DC motors.

We have studied the hydrostatic pressure dependence of Ge nanocrystals embedded in a SiO2 matrix on a Si substrate by Raman scattering at room temperature. During the first cycle of increasing pressure, we observed a step change in the Ge Raman mode from 310.4 to 313.8cm−1 at ∼23kbar. The linear pressure coefficients α obtained before and after the step change at ∼23kbar are 0.42 and 0.64cm−1kbar−1, respectively. Upon decreasing pressure, the Ge mode follows a single slope of pressure coefficient α=0.64cm−1kbar−1. A finite-element analysis was carried out to investigate the elastic-field distribution in the Ge/SiO2/Si nanocrystal system, where the discontinuity of the specific geometric configuration with different elastic constants causes local areas of stress concentration around the interface. The step change of the Raman shifts with pressure at ∼23kbar was attributed to complete delamination between the SiO2 film and the Si substrate.

In this paper, teleoperated control of a mobile robot with two arms is implemented. An exoskeleton type motion capturing device is designed and built for controlling the robot remotely through wireless communication. Kinematics of the exoskeleton type motion capturing system are analyzed and simulation studies are conducted to confirm certain ranges of workspace without singular positions. Experimental studies of teleoperation from the exoskeleton device to control the mobile robot are carried out to show feasible application of wireless man-machine interface. © 2003 IEEE.

In this paper, neural network control of an inverted pendulum on an x-y plane is proposed. The inverted pendulum has two degrees-of-freedom to move freely on the x-y plane. Decentralized neural networks are used not only to balance the angle of pendulum, but also to control the position tracking of the cart. Specially, circular trajectory position tracking control of the cart while balancing the pendulum is presented. Experimental works show that position tracking of the cart was successful as well as it maintains balance of the pendulum. © 2003 IEEE.

In this paper a path planning method for emergency maneuvers of autonomous vehicles is presented. The path planning method is based on the theory of elastic bands. Due to the local disturbances caused by obstacles on the nominal trajectory the elastic behavior allows sufficient flexibility of the emergency trajectory and minimal local changes of curvature. The minimization of local changes of curvature ensures the drivability of the emergency trajectory under vehicle dynamics aspect, which is also considered in this paper. The results of the described method is demonstrated for emergency situations in lane change maneuvers for autonomous vehicles.
