At Google, the PageRank algorithm helps rankings in search results by providing measures of web page importance. This paper builds upon the distributed randomized approach for this algorithm proposed in our recent works. To reduce computation and communication, we develop a method to systematically aggregate web pages into groups by exploiting the sparsity inherent in the web. Each group computes an aggregated PageRank, which can be distributed among group members. We provide a decentralized scheme for its computation and analyze convergence properties.

It can be highly meaningful for individuals, institutions and even governments to extract reliable and insightful trends, opinions or particular pieces of information out of the network single web logs are embedded in - the blogo sphere. However, there has been virtually little in the way of user interfaces designed for the exploration and information gathering from the blogo sphere as a whole to allow for an integrated knowledge collection and information extraction tool. Users have to rely on their own capability to find, select or filter entries and navigate through this complex network, a task that can easily become tedious. An approach to solve this problem could be BLOGCONNECT presented in the following, a tool to visualize the inherent network characteristics of and the aggregated knowledge pool of the blogosphere.

The sequence kernel has been shown to be a promising kernel function for learning from sequential data such as speech and DNA. However, it is not scalable to massive datasets due to its high computational cost. In this paper, we propose a method of approximating the sequence kernel that is shown to be computationally very efficient. More specifically, we formulate the problem of approximating the sequence kernel as the problem of obtaining a pre-image in a reproducing kernel Hilbert space. The effectiveness of the proposed approximation is demonstrated in text-independent speaker identification experiments with 10 male speakers-our approach provides significant reduction in computation time with limited performance degradation. Based on the proposed method, we develop a real-time kernel-based speaker identification system using Virtual Studio technology (VST).

In gaming and other multimedia applications, there is an increasing need to simulate and transform the sounds of physical interactions with real-world objects. When these sounds are based upon source recordings, this motivates the need for flexible, yet ecologically valid resyntheses. With modal analysis as a front end, banded waveguide resynthesis enables flexible modifications to dynamic spectral content and varied forms of interaction. Unfortunately, traditional banded waveguide models using biquad filters can have problems with undesired transient behavior. To this end, we introduce a new perfect reconstruction filterbank that allows for each filter to be individually tuned to a desired mode frequency and precisely cancel the other selected frequencies. Comparisons with traditional biquad models amply demonstrate the improved transient response and overall fidelity of our model. In addition, examples of resynthesis, transformation, and alternative interaction with real-world recordings are given.
