Computational models of narrative: Review of the workshop

On October 8-10,2009, an interdisciplinary group met in Beverley, Massachusetts, to evaluate the state of the art in the computational modeling of narrative. Three important findings emerged: (1) current work in computational modeling is described by three different levels of representation;(2) there is a paucity of studies at the highest, most abstract level aimed at inferring the meaning or message of the narrative;and (3) there is a need to establish a standard data bank of annotated narratives, analogous to the Penn Treebank. In recent years, the Adobe Flash platform has risen as a credible and universal platform for rapid development and deployment of interactive web-based applications. It is also the accepted standard for delivery of streaming media, and many web applications related to music information retrieval, such as Pandora, *** and Musicovery, are built using Flash. The limitations of Flash, however, have made it difficult for music-IR researchers and developers to utilize complex sound and music signal processing within their web applications. Furthermore, the real-time audio processing and synchronization required for some music-IR-related activities demands significant computational power and specialized audio algorithms, far beyond what is possible to implement using Flash scripting. By taking advantage of features recently added to the platform, including dynamic audio control and C crosscompilation for near-native performance, we have developed the Audio-processing Library for Flash (ALF), providing developers with a library of common audio processing routines and affording Flash developers a degree of sound interaction previously unavailable through webbased platforms. We present several music-IR-driven applications that incorporate ALF to demonstrate its utility. © 2010 International Society for Music Information Retrieval.

At Google, the PageRank algorithm helps rankings in search results by providing measures of web page importance. This paper builds upon the distributed randomized approach for this algorithm proposed in our recent works. To reduce computation and communication, we develop a method to systematically aggregate web pages into groups by exploiting the sparsity inherent in the web. Each group computes an aggregated PageRank, which can be distributed among group members. We provide a decentralized scheme for its computation and analyze convergence properties.

This paper presents Mmmmm;a Multimodal Mobile Music Mixer that provides DJs a new interface for mixing music on the Nokia N900 phones. Mmmmm presents a novel way for DJ to become more interactive with their audience and vise versa. The software developed for the N900 mobile phone utilizes the phones built-in accelerometer sensor and Bluetooth audio streaming capabilities to mix and apply effects to music using hand gestures and have the mixed audio stream to Bluetooth speakers, which allows the DJ to move about the environment and get familiarized with their audience, turning the experience of DJing into an interactive and audience engaging process. Mmmmm is designed so that the DJ can utilize hand gestures and haptic feedback to help them perform the various tasks involved in DJing (mixing, applying effects, and etc). This allows the DJ to focus on the crowd, thus providing the DJ a better intuition of what kind of music or musical mixing style the audience is more likely to enjoy and engage with. Additionally, Mmmmm has an "Ambi-ent Tempo Detection mode in which the phones camera is utilized to detect the amount of movement in the environment and suggest to the DJ the tempo of music that should be played. This mode utilizes frame differencing and pixel change overtime to get a sense of how fast the environment is changing, loosely correlating to how fast the audience is dancing or the lights are flashing in the scene. By determining the ambient tempo of the environment the DJ can get a better sense for the type of music that would fit best for their venue. Mmmmm helps novice DJs achieve a better music repertoire by allowing them to interact with their audience and receive direct feedback on their performance. It can be highly meaningful for individuals, institutions and even governments to extract reliable and insightful trends, opinions or particular pieces of information out of the network single web logs are embedded in - the blogo sphere. However, there has been virtually little in the way of user interfaces designed for the exploration and information gathering from the blogo sphere as a whole to allow for an integrated knowledge collection and information extraction tool. Users have to rely on their own capability to find, select or filter entries and navigate through this complex network, a task that can easily become tedious. An approach to solve this problem could be BLOGCONNECT presented in the following, a tool to visualize the inherent network characteristics of and the aggregated knowledge pool of the blogosphere.

The paper investigates failure localization in all-optical mesh networks using monitoring trails (m-trails) and monitoring trees (m-trees). By considering shared risk link groups (SRLGs) of different scenarios, integer linear programs (ILP) for m-trail/m-tree allocation are provided that can achieve unambiguous failure localization (UFL) of any single SRLG failure. © 2010 IEEE.

The sequence kernel has been shown to be a promising kernel function for learning from sequential data such as speech and DNA. However, it is not scalable to massive datasets due to its high computational cost. In this paper, we propose a method of approximating the sequence kernel that is shown to be computationally very efficient. More specifically, we formulate the problem of approximating the sequence kernel as the problem of obtaining a pre-image in a reproducing kernel Hilbert space. The effectiveness of the proposed approximation is demonstrated in text-independent speaker identification experiments with 10 male speakers-our approach provides significant reduction in computation time with limited performance degradation. Based on the proposed method, we develop a real-time kernel-based speaker identification system using Virtual Studio technology (VST).

Gait analysis is used for non-automated and automated diagnosis of various neuromuskuloskeletal abnormalities. Automated systems are important in assisting physicians for diagnosis of various diseases. This study presents preliminary steps of designing a clinical decision support system for semi-automated diagnosis of knee illnesses by using temporal gait data. This study compares the gait of 111 patients with 110 age-matched normal subjects. Different feature reduction techniques, (FFT, averaging and PCA) are compared by the Mahalanobis Distance criterion and by performances of well known classifiers. The feature selection criteria used reveals that the gait measurements for different parts of the body such as knee or hip to be more effective for detection of the illnesses. Then, a set of classifiers is tested by a ten-fold cross validation approach on all datasets. It is observed that average based datasets performed better than FFT applied ones for almost all classifiers while PCA applied dataset performed better for linear classifiers. In general, nonlinear classifiers performed quite well (best error rate is about 0.035) and better than the linear ones. © 2010 Springer Berlin Heidelberg.

We propose a particle-based solution to simulate the interactions between blood flow and vessel wall for virtual surgery. By coupling two particle-based techniques, the smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) and mass-spring model (MSM), we can simulate the blood flow and deformation of vessel seamlessly. At the vessel wall, particles are considered as both boundary particles for SPH solver and mass points for the MSM solver. We implement an improved repulsive boundary condition to simulate the interactions. The computation of blood flow dynamics and vessel wall deformations are performed in an alternating fashion in every time step. To ensure realism, parameters of both SPH and MSM are carefully configured. Experimental results demonstrate the potential of the proposed method in providing real-time and realistic interactions for virtual vascular surgery systems. © 2010 ACM.

In gaming and other multimedia applications, there is an increasing need to simulate and transform the sounds of physical interactions with real-world objects. When these sounds are based upon source recordings, this motivates the need for flexible, yet ecologically valid resyntheses. With modal analysis as a front end, banded waveguide resynthesis enables flexible modifications to dynamic spectral content and varied forms of interaction. Unfortunately, traditional banded waveguide models using biquad filters can have problems with undesired transient behavior. To this end, we introduce a new perfect reconstruction filterbank that allows for each filter to be individually tuned to a desired mode frequency and precisely cancel the other selected frequencies. Comparisons with traditional biquad models amply demonstrate the improved transient response and overall fidelity of our model. In addition, examples of resynthesis, transformation, and alternative interaction with real-world recordings are given.
