The importance estimation problem (estimating the ratio of two probability density functions) has recently gathered a great deal of attention for use in various applications, e.g., outlier detection and covariate shift adaptation. In this paper, we propose a new importance estimation method using mixtures of probabilistic principal component analyzers (PP-CAs). Our method employs the framework of the Kullback-Leibler importance estimation procedure (KLIEP) using using linear or kernel models. The proposed approach entitled PPCA mixture KLIEP (PM-KLIEP) can improve importance estimation accuracy with correlated and rank-deficient data. Through experiments, we show the validity of the proposed approach.

A planar covered multi-slot-array heat applicator with beam scanning capability is developed for interstitial microwave hyperthermia. The interstitial applicator is based on multi-slot-array structure, and beam scanning capability is added by gradual variation of the slot sizes. Through the choice of input frequencies, concentrated beam can be generated at the designed slot positions, which provides focused heating as well as additional dimension of beam control. A low permittivity dielectric cover is placed on top of the slot arrays to double in function as a protective layer and a dielectric lens which helps to flatten the wavefront to allow the microwave radiation deeper into the heating material. The measured infra-red images and thermal distributions confirm the beam scanning capability of the proposed applicator. It is also shown that the heating volume and uniformity can be improved by the proposed beam scanning applicator compared with the fixed beam applicator using uniform slot arrays.

An integrated switched beam forming network is demonstrated at V-band by integrating an absorptive single-pole four-throw (SP4T) switch together with a 4×4 Butler matrix using 0.13 μm CMOS process. The fabricated absorptive SP4T switch shows a measured insertion loss of 4.5 dB at 60 GHz and isolation higher than 31 dB from 57 to 63 GHz. The return losses of the deactivated output ports also maintain better than 14 dB due to the absorptive configuration. The entire insertion loss of the integrated beam former IC was around 7.5 dB at 60 GHz, among which 3 dB is attributed to Butler matrix. The overall phase error was within ±12%. The calculated array factor from the measured S-parameters shows that the beam-forming network generates four beams at ±14°, ±54°. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of CMOS switched beam-forming network integrating an absorptive SP4T switch and Butler matrix at V-band.

Automatically annotating or tagging unlabeled audio files has several applications, such as database organization and recommender systems. We are interested in the case where the system is trained using clean high-quality audio files, but most of the files that need to be automatically tagged during the test phase are heavily compressed and noisy, for instance if they were captured on a mobile device. In this situation we assume the audio files follow a covariate shift model in the acoustic feature space, i.e., the feature distributions are different in the training and test phases, but the conditional distribution of labels given features remains unchanged. Our method uses a specially designed audio similarity measure as input to a set of weighted logistic regressors, which attempt to alleviate the influence of covariate shift. Results on a freely available database of sound files contributed and labeled by non-expert users, demonstrate effective automatic tagging performance.
