The sequence kernel has been shown to be a promising kernel function for learning from sequential data such as speech and DNA. However, it is not scalable to massive datasets due to its high computational cost. In this paper, we propose a method of approximating the sequence kernel that is shown to be computationally very efficient. More specifically, we formulate the problem of approximating the sequence kernel as the problem of obtaining a pre-image in a reproducing kernel Hilbert space. The effectiveness of the proposed approximation is demonstrated in text-independent speaker identification experiments with 10 male speakers--our approach provides significant reduction in computation time with limited performance degradation. Based on the proposed method, we develop a real-time kernel-based speaker identification system using Virtual Studio technology (VST).

Scattering of the terahertz radiation on a graphene‐based nano‐antenna is considered. Different electromagnetic models of graphene are discussed and applied to calculate extinction, scattering and absorption cross sections of the nano‐antenna. Scattering resonances in the terahertz band are identified as longitudinal Fabry‐Perot resonances of surface plasmon polaritons supported by the graphene layer. A simple while powerful model, based on the effective mode index of plasmon polaritons, is proposed to predict the antenna resonant properties. A systematic numerical study of the graphene‐based nano‐antenna is presented for different antenna dimensions. Finally, the potential of graphene‐based nano‐antennas for terahertz applications is discussed.

Time of day electric utility rates (TOU) are unavoidable. Consumers have no idea how TOU rates will impact their energy bills. Studies have shown that TOU accompanies by real-time feedback help reducing energy consumption and shifting loads to off-peak hours. Soon, smart meters with wireless communication capabilities will be in every household. Using the capabilities of smart meters, detailed usage of appliances can be provided to consumers via web applications. By allowing consumers to apply and test the impact of different rates, effectiveness of feedback based DSM can be enhances. We study SRLG (Shared Risk Link Group) failure monitoring and localization in all-optical WDM (Wavelength Division Multiplexing) networks. All links in each SRLG are logically grouped as a whole, and they fail at the same time when the SRLG failure event occurs. To achieve fast SRLG failure localization, monitoring is carried out at the optical layer using the recently proposed monitoring trail (m-trail) structure. By formulating an ILP (Integer Linear Program), we optimally solve the m-trail allocation problem to achieve unambiguous SRLG failure localization with the minimum monitoring cost. We claim that our work provides the first study in optimally allocating free-routed m-trails for achieving fast and unambiguous SRLG failure localization, with flexible tradeoff between the monitor cost and the bandwidth cost (i.e., supervisory wavelength-links).

OPRoS(Open Software Platform for Robotics Services) is a robot S/W platform that provides standardized components and interfaces. It uses the UPnP(Universal Plug and Play) as communication middleware. The UPnP is designed to bring easy-to-use, flexible, and standards-based connectivity to ad-hoc or unmanaged networks. We use UPnP eventing for push-style data transfer. But, the UPnP eventing has an inefficient factor for this. In this paper, we explain the reason and propose a single event mechanism to overcome the inefficiency.

Google has recently released the video compression format VP8 to the open source community. This new compression format competes against the existing H.264 video standard developed by the ITU-T Video Coding Experts Group (VCEG) in collaboration with the ISO/IEC Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG). This paper compares these two video coding standards in terms of video bit rate-distortion (quality) performance and the video network traffic variability with different long video sequences. We find that VP8 presently does not fulfill its promise to achieve twice the quality at half the bandwidth compared to H.264. The rate-distortion (RD) performance of VP8 is rather slightly below the RD performance of H.264. On the positive side, in contrast to H.264, VP8 has no license fees.
