This article provides an overview of dictionary-based methods (DBMs), and reviews recent work in the application of such methods to working with audio and music signals. As Fourier analysis is to additive synthesis, DBMs can be seen as the analytical counterpart to a generalized granular synthesis, where a sound is built by combining heterogeneous atoms selected from a user-defined dictionary. As such, DBMs provide novel ways for analyzing and visualizing audio signals, creating multiresolution descriptions of their contents, and designing sound transformations unique to a description of audio in terms of atoms.

Real time, multichannel audio content delivery over the air is expected to significantly simplify the interconnection complexity required for setting up typical home theater applications. However, despite the technological advantages of wireless networking standards related to high transmission rates and Quality-of-Service support, a number of issues have to be additionally addressed, such as multiple loudspeaker synchronization and packet delay/losses containing compressed quality and multiplexed audio data. In this work, further developments in the area of wireless audio delivery are presented by considering in detail multichannel reproduction for wireless home theater applications. Using both subjective and objective performance evaluation criteria, it is shown that cable-free multichannel audio playback is feasible under specific networking and audio coding conditions.

We compare the characteristics and performance of joint (single-step) and sequential (two-step) approaches for creating sparse and structured acoustic signal representations derived using overcomplete methods (OMs). A joint approach, such as molecular matching pursuit (MMP), attempts to find coherent structures in a signal as part of the decomposition process, while a sequential approach, such as agglomerative clustering (AC), attempts to find coherent structures after the signal decomposition. We review each approach, and examine their performance using real audio and music signals.

In this paper, we tackle robust human pose recognition using unlabelled markers obtained from an optical marker-based motion capture system. A coarse-to-fine fast pose matching algorithm is presented with the following three steps. Given a query pose, firstly, the majority of the non-matching poses are rejected according to marker distributions along the radius and height dimensions. Secondly, relative rotation angles between the query pose and the remaining candidate poses are estimated using a fast histogram matching method based on circular convolution implemented using the fast Fourier transform. Finally, rotation angle estimates are refined using nonlinear least square minimization through the Levenberg-Marquardt minimization. In the presence of multiple solutions, false poses can be effectively removed by thresholding the minimized matching scores. The proposed framework can handle missing markers caused by occlusion. Experimental results using real motion capture data show the efficacy of the proposed approach.

The complexity of modern digital circuits has increased enormously particularly due to paradigm shift from system-on-board to designs embracing embedded cores-based system-on-chips (SOCs). The increased complexity has resulted in a huge challenge in setting up their appropriate fault testing environment. Though enormous efforts were directed to rapidly test very large-scale integrated (VLSI) circuit chips with reasonable cost, with advances in technology, new frontiers emerged. This paper aims at developing a method to verify and test circuit architecture under hardware and software codesign environment, targeting specifically embedded cores-based system-on-chips (SOCs). The well-known concept of design-for-testability (DFT) is utilized in the paper based on the use of ModelSim simulation and verification tool to test simulate the entire design. Some partial results on ISCAS 85 combinational benchmark circuit are provided in the paper, besides a comparison of the results with some previous works.

In this paper, a novel approach for availability evaluation is presented. In order to precisely capture the features of practical network operation and improve the accuracy in the availability evaluation, the dependency of network element failures is characterized by failure states (FS). For this purpose, a method that generating a failure state list for protection is developed and embedded in the proposed survivable routing algorithm such that the pre-defined connection availability can be guaranteed as simple as by protecting a single FS failure. Built on the availability evaluation a novel availability-constrained survivable routing algorithm, called Generalized Dedicated Protection (GDP), is introduced for circuit switched mesh networks. The proposed algorithm inherits the simplicity of dedicated protection mechanisms while offering the connection availability guarantee in presence of the network topological limitation that has been taken as the greatest challenge in the related research effort. Finally, extensive simulation is conducted to verify the advantages gained in the proposed GDP method compared with a number of previously reported counterparts.

We present a floor-space design that provides the impression of walking on various terrains by rendering graphical, audio and haptic stimuli synchronously with low latency. Currently, interactive floors tend to focus on visual and auditory feedback but have neglected to explore the role of haptics. Our design recreates these three modalities in a direct manner where the sensors and reactive cues are located in the same area. The goal of this project is the creation of a realistic and dynamic area of ground that allows multiple, untethered users to engage in intuitive interaction via locomotion in a virtual or augmented reality environment.
