The design of space-efficient support hardware for built-in self-testing (BIST) is of critical importance in the synthesis of cores-based system-on-chips (SOCs). This paper reports on further studies on a space compression technique recently developed by the authors that facilitates designing such circuits using pseudorandom and compact test sets, with the basic objective of reducing the storage requirements for the circuit under test (CUT) while still retaining the fault coverage information. The compression technique uses the concept of fault graded output merger based on identifying strong and weak compatibility relations in response data. The proposed method guarantees design with full fault coverage for single stuck-line faults together with low CPU simulation time and acceptable area overhead Simulation runs on ISCAS 89 full-scan sequential benchmark circuits with ATALANTA and FSIM programs as reported herein confirm once again the usefulness of the suggested approach.

The requirement for an automated test system has immensely increased due to the realization that manual testing is associated with additional resources and staffing constraints. In order to achieve a competitive edge, reduced development cost, timely product delivery, and product quality are mandatory in today's organization. Manual testing requires skilled operators that increase cost, time, and product delivery. The low cost computer based automated system helps to get an edge by fulfilling these organizational demands. In this paper, an automated testing system has been developed to support functional testing of Nortel Network's modem system (1-Meg SUT). The modem is an inherently complex asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL) product and its testing is far more complex than just verification of process faults. The complexity of ADSL system renders automated test system an important and imperative part of ADSL testing. The subject paper demonstrates the indispensable need of automated test system for ADSL testing and its advantages in providing a competitive edge for the organization.

Real time embedded controller design for safety control of PWR nuclear power reactor

Microcontroller based embedded controllers are gaining popularity because they require minimal interfacing hardware. Based on this trend the paper at hand describes the design and implementation of real time safety control of the PWR nuclear power reactor. We have not only replaced an analog neutron density level controller with the embedded one, but also implemented all of the safety controls within the same controller. Honeywell's HT83C51 microcontroller has been used with A/D RS7581JN to capture data from sensors and implement the desired control strategy. The performance parameters for evaluating the controller are maximum operating frequency, operating current and output drive voltage for controlled modules and peripherals.

A light weight enhancement to RC4 based security for resource constrained wireless devices

The Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) uses the 64 bit RC4 secret key stream cipher as its layer 2 security pro- tocol. Although the underlying RC4 cipher is secure, the potential reuse of the same key stream by different frames is a weakness in the WEP. One enhancement to WEP is the Temporal Key Integrity Protocol (TKIP), which acts as a wrapper to the WEP protocol and uses a 128 bit RC4 encryption to eliminate the possibility of key reuse within a given session. However, TKIP cannot be gain- fully employed in devices where the 64 bit RC4 encryp- tion is hardwired. Also, with 128 bit encryption TKIP can secure 1030 frames per session. Comparing this to the typical number of frames per session (500-1000), it is easy to see that the use of a 128 bit key causes unneces- sary drain of power. The Wifi Protected Access (WPA), uses a 128 bit Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) ci- pher in the Counter-Mode-CBC-MAC Protocol (CCMP). This protocol requires higher computational power than the TKIP and is only intended for devices which possess higher computational power and memory. In this paper, we propose a light weight enhancement to the 64 bit WEP, which provides significant improve- ment in security (measured as the number of frames se- curely transmitted before base key change) with small en- ergy and memory overhead. Moreover, our technique can be tailored to the specific needs of resource constrained environments to provide just the necessary level of secu- rity. We use the Intrinsyc CerfCube1 as a resource con- strained wireless device and measure the resource con- sumed by various wireless security protocols on this de- vice. From the experimental results we see that proposed LWE consumes about 62% less power compared to TKIP and 99% less power compared CCMP (AES), while pro-viding a security enhancement of 232 over the WEP pro- tocol. The authors investigate the characteristics and performance of joint (single‐step) and sequential (two‐step) approaches to creating sparse and structured multiresolution representations of audio and music signals derived using sparse overcomplete methods. A joint approach, such as molecular matching pursuit, attempts to find structures in a signal as part of the decomposition process, while a sequential approach, such as agglomerative clustering, attempts to find structures in the completed decomposition of a signal. Each of these approaches have different benefits and drawbacks. For a joint approach, it is computationally convenient that the decomposition and structuring are done simultaneously, but usually only simple structural relations are possible. For a sequential approach, one is working in a parameter space of much smaller dimension than the original signal, but the computation is higher since the decomposition and the structure building are two separate processes. Results from these approaches using real audio and music signals will be compared and contrasted, and will contribute to our goal of creating an enhanced interface between the content of audio and music signals, e.g., onsets, notes, voices, and their multiresolution sparse atomic decompositions.

media delivery over packet networks is often plagued by packet losses which limit its utility to end users. Forward Error Correction (FEC) based, techniques are important for overcoming this problem. This paper further develops an EEC-based technique [1] to maximize the expected received media quality by jointly choosing which packets to send and which packets to protect - including discarding packets to make additional room for protection. We describe a straight-forward implementation leveraging existing FEC system components. Comprehensive experiments demonstrate that significant gains in PSNR of several dB are achieved when sending H.264/MPEG-4 AVC coded video over a packet erasure channel. © 2007 IEEE.

Due to the Web s continued growth, the need for flexibility, adaptability and rapid response time to user query has assumed greater importance in information service systems. The dynamics of information services are constantly changing. The users demand and expect a 'flawless any time anywhere" service availability standard. The client-server model of distributed computing in vogue is increasingly becoming inefficient in coping with the rising demand of information services. Faded Information Field (FIF) architecture with Push and Pull mobile agent technologies was proposed recently addresses these issues effectively. FIF balances the cost of information service provision and utilization where Service Provider (SP) fades the information contents through Push-MAs and the user sends in Pull-MAs to search the requisite information. In this work, a simulation engine was programmed to mimic the physical parameters of the system in terms of routers, servers and the level of information faded. Simulations were performed to determine the average delay of information distribution in the system under varying parameters of the system like servers, and the number of levels in which the information is faded in the system. It is demonstrated that the size of FIF along with the levels of information fading have a direct influence on the information retrieval function in the information service system. ©2007 IEEE.

In recent years, technologies have been introduced offering a large amount of computing and networking resources. New applications such as Google AdSense and BitTorrent can profit from the use of these resources. An efficient way of discovering and reserving these resources is by using the Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) concept. SOA can be considered as a philosophy or paradigm in organizing and utilizing services and capabilities that may be under the control of different ownership domains. This paper presents an architecture that can be used to support end-to-end resource virtualization for Web 2.0 applications and in particular for peer-to-peer applications by using the Service Oriented Architecture concept.

With the advancement of wireless networks and mobile access devices such as cell phones and PDAs, multimedia services could be offered through wireless broadcast networks to these mobile devices. Therefore, there is a need to securely deliver multimedia content/data to many users over an insecure channel. Broadcast encryption scheme could provide this solution. The first formal study of broadcast encryption scheme is by Fiat and Noar in 1993. Since then, many broadcast encryption schemes have been proposed to improve the efficiency which is measured by three parameters, that is, length of transmission messages, users' storage and computational overhead at a user device. Some broadcast encryption schemes require less users storage, but the length of transmission messages or computation overhead depends on the number of users. In this paper, we proposed an authenticated broadcast encryption scheme which has an additional property than current proposed broadcast encryption schemes, that is, all users can verify who the sender is. The proposed scheme is proved to be secure against chosen ciphertext attacks based on the decision l-bilinear Diffie-Hellman exponent assumption. Further-more, the simulation results, transmission messages nearly independent of the number of users and reasonable user storage show that the proposed authenticated broadcast encryption scheme is efficient and suitable for mobile devices. © 2007 IEEE.

The convenience and flexibility of wireless networks to allow clients (user nodes) to be connected to the network at any place and any time have resulted in the growth and increased popularity of wireless networks. Access control in wireless networks is very important to prevent unauthorized users from accessing the network. Besides this, client anonymity and resistance to Denial-of-Service (DoS) attacks are also important and should be provided by access control protocols for wireless networks. Password-based authentication provide good solutions for access control protocols, however they usually do not provide client identity confidentiality and DoS resistance. In this paper, we review a DoS-resistant anonymous access control (AAC) protocol and point out that the protocol does not provide protection against three different DoS attacks. We then propose a new DoS-resistant AAC protocol that avoids the flaws of the previous protocol. Our proposed protocol also provides client anonymity and protection against DoS attacks. A security and complexity analysis shows that our proposed protocol is secure and efficient for access control in wireless networks. © 2007 IEEE.
