computer algebra system (CAS) applications are mathematical applications developed with the purpose of solving mathematical problems which are too difficult or even impossible to solve by hand. Modern versions of CAS applications are known for their rather large set of features such as support for graphical representations of results, symbolic manipulation, big-integer calculations, and complex-number arithmetic. The proposed idea in developing framework for a mathematical tool with CAS capability is derived from the motivation of object oriented design that integrate each application process in terms of an independent object module. Additional motivation is scalability and interface, meaning more functionality can be integrated without changing any core existed module, that is just create a new object and plug in.

Recently, many companies have attempted to adopt biomeric technology in their mobile phones. In this paper, we propose a new NIR (NearInfra-Red) lighting face recognition method for mobile phones by using megapixel camera image. This paper presents four advantages and contributions over previous research. First, we propose a new eye detection method for face localization for mobile phones based on corneal specular reflections. To detect these SRs (Specular Reflections) (even for users with glasses), we propose successive On/Off activation of the dual NIR illuminators of mobile phone. Second, because the face image is captured by the NIR illuminator, the nose area can be highly saturated, which can degrade face recognition accuracy. To overcome this problem, we use a simple logarithmic image enhancement method, which is suitable for mobile phones with low processing power. Third, considering the low processing speed of mobile phones, we adopt integer-based PCA (Principal Component Analysis) method for face recognition excluding floating-point operation. Fouth, by comparing the recognition performance using the integer-based PCA to those using LDA (Linear Discriminant Analysis) and ICA (Independent Component Analysis) methods, we could know that the integer-based PCA showed better performance apt for mobile phone with NIR image. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2007.

The unique characteristic of a repetitive process is a series of sweeps or passes through a set of dynamics defined over a finite duration known as the pass length. At the end of each pass, the process is reset and the next time through the output, or pass profile, produced on the previous pass acts as a forcing function on, an hence contributes to, the dynamics of the new pass profile. They are hence a class of systems with information propagation in two independent directions where here the dynamics over the finite pass length are described by a matrix linear differential equation and that from pass to pass has a discrete updating structure. This means that filtering/estimation theory/algorithms for, in particular, 2D discrete linear systems is not applicable. In this paper we solve a general filtering problem with a view toward use in the many applications where such action will be required. © 2007 EURASIP.

This paper considers the general filtering problem for a distinct class of two-dimensional (2-D) discrete linear systems, i.e. information propagation in two independent directions, known as discrete linear repetitive processes which are of both system-theoretic and applications interest. In particular, new results on the design of filters with guaranteed levels of performance are developed. These take the form of algorithms for the design of an ∞ and 2-∞ dynamic output feedback filter which guarantees that the resulting filtering error process is stable and has prescribed disturbance attenuation performance as measured by ∞ and 2- ∞ norms. © 2007 IEEE.

There have been many attempts to represent music using a wide variety of different music visualisation schemes. In this paper, we propose a novel system architecture which combines Max/MSPtrade with Flashtrade that can be used to build real-time music visualisations rapidly. In addition, we have used this proposed architecture to develop a music visualisation scheme that uses individual notes from a MIDI keyboard or from a standard MIDI file and creates novel displays that reflect pitch, note duration, characteristics such as how hard a key is struck, and which instruments are playing at any one time. The proposed music visualization scheme is a first step towards developing a music visualization that alone can provide a sense of musical experience to the user.

Fuzzy communication contains vague or imprecise components and it might lack of abundant information. If two entities (man or machine) are communicating by a fuzzy channel, it is necessary that both ends possess the same codebook. The codebook might partly consist of common knowledge but it usually requires a context dependent part that is either learned by the communicating entity or defined by expert knowledge. Possibly it is continuously adapting to the input information. If such a codebook is not available or it contains too imprecise information, the information to be transmitted might be too much distorted and might lead to misunderstanding, misinterpretation and serious damage. If however the quality of the available codebook is satisfactory, the communication will be efficient i. e., the original contents of the message can be reconstructed. At the same time it is cost effective, as fuzzy communication is compressed as compared to traditional "abundant communication".

We investigated the role of haptic, proprioceptive and auditory information in the non‐visual identification of walking grounds. We selected four solid materials (e.g., marble) and four aggregate materials (e.g., fine gravel). Five observers identified the materials in each of four experimental conditions: multisensory, haptic, proprioceptive, and auditory. In the auditory condition, they were presented with walking sounds they produced. In the other conditions, observers walked blindfolded on the materials. In the haptic and proprioceptive conditions auditory information was masked. In the proprioceptive condition haptic information was masked. No masking took place in the multisensory condition. In all conditions, solids and aggregates were seldom confused, and aggregates were better identified than solids. Chance identification performance was observed only for solids in the presence of simultaneous haptic and auditory masking, suggesting a secondary role of proprioceptive information. In the proprioceptive condition, identification of aggregates was better than chance, suggesting a significant role of proprioception. Identification of aggregates was at its best in the haptic condition, and not in the multisensory condition, suggesting either an inconsistency of information between auditory and non‐auditory channels, or conflicting cognitive strategies for the exploitation of these sources of information in multisensory contexts.

What are the sources of happiness and sadness in everyday life? In this paper, we employ 'linguistic ethnography' to seek out where happiness lies in our everyday lives by considering a corpus of blogposts from the LiveJournal community annotated with happy and sad moods. By analyzing this corpus, we derive lists of happy and sad words and phrases annotated by their 'happiness factor.' Various semantic analyses performed with this wordlist reveal the happiness trajectory of a 24-day (3am and 9-10p are most happy), and a 7-day week (Wednesdays are saddest), and compare the socialness and humancenteredness of happy descriptions versus sad descriptions. We evaluate our corpus-based approach in a classification task and contrast our wordlist with emotionally-annotated wordlists produced by experimental focus groups. Having located happiness temporally and semantically within this corpus of everyday life, the paper concludes by offering a corpus-inspired livable recipe for happiness.
