The paper proposes a novel distributed control architecture for shared protection with reduced complete routing information, which aims to initiate a graceful compromise between the amount of link-state dissemination and the performance impairment due to the incompleteness of routing information. We first give explicit and comprehensive descriptions on a number of reported routing information dissemination scenarios for shared protection. A novel framework of link-state dissemination for facilitating shared protection, called reduced complete routing scenario, is introduced, in which the singular value decomposition (SVD) transformation is adopted to deal with the information reduction. We show, through simulation, that the proposed scheme can achieve a higher throughput and a better estimation in reconstruction of the spare provision matrix than the other schemes taking the same complexity of link-state dissemination.

Using optimized ion implantation, we have fabricated high performance 2-pole and 3-pole CPW filters on Si substrates at /spl sim/30 GHz, with very narrow 1.0 (3.1%) GHz and 0.75 (2.5%) GHz pass-band as well as small insertion loss. Microstrip filters on Si show small 3.2 dB loss at 27 GHz, which has smaller size than CPW case without the large coplanar ground planes. In contrast, the nonimplanted filters failed due to the high substrate loss.

To make the transition from a technological curiosity to productive tools, humanoid robots will require key advances in many areas, including, mechanical design, sensing, embedded avionics, power, and navigation. Using the NASA Johnson Space Center's Robonaut as a testbed, the DARPA mobile autonomous robot software (MARS) humanoids team is investigating technologies that will enable humanoid robots to work effectively with humans and autonomously work with tools. A novel learning approach is being applied that enables the robot to learn both from a remote human teleoperating the robot and an adjacent human giving instruction. When the remote human performs tasks teleoperatively, the robot learns the salient sensory-motor features to executing the task. Once learned, the task may be carried out fusing the skills required to perform the task, guided by on-board sensing. The adjacent human takes advantage of previously learned skills to sequence the execution of these skills. Preliminary results from initial experiments using a drill to tighten lug nuts on a wheel are discussed.

We investigate the issues in voice communications using IP over tandem connections of wireline and wireless links with the goal of determining end-to-end system performance. We study the particular example of using G.711 speech coding in the backbone wireline network and Adaptive Multi-rate (AMR) speech coding in a wireless LAN tandem network and study the impact of specific methods of adaptive re-encoding, error concealment, error control coding, and network protocol design to deliver the desired end-to-end quality of service. In addition to simulation results and objective speech quality measures, we present estimation-theoretic and information-theoretic analyses for the tandem packet loss link connections.

In 1960, Campbell derived a quantity that he defined as the coefficient rate of a random process that involves the process spectral entropy. However, no potential applications of the coefficient rate were identified. Two new derivations of Campbell's rate coefficient rate are presented. One derivation solidifies the interpretation of this quantity as a coefficient rate and allows definition of an effective bandwidth for the process. The second derivation implies a new approach for realization adaptive source compression. The coefficient rate can be used for realization adaptive coefficient selection in a sequence of source representations. Furthermore, the effective bandwidth is designated as Campbell bandwidth and contrasted with Fourier bandwidth and Shannon bandwidth. Several specific examples are presented that illustrate the differences among the three quantities. © 2003 IEEE.

The use of multiple antennas at both the transmitter and receiver can significantly increase the channel capacity. These systems are called the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. By using orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) transmission techniques, the MIMO-OFDM system can achieve high spectral efficiency, which makes it an attractive candidate for high-data-rate wireless applications. In this paper, we propose a convolutionally coded MIMO-OFDM system with EM-based channel estimation and a QRD-M data detection algorithm. In our systems, one training symbol is transmitted from each transmit antenna for the MEMO channel estimation at the receiver. With the channel estimates available, we apply the QRD-M algorithm on the estimated channel matrix for suboptimal data detection with reasonable computational cost. The bit error rate (BER) and packet error rate (PER) performance of the MIMO-OFDM systems are compared. In the simulations, the bit error rate performance of our systems is 9 (or 5) dB better than that of uncoded (or coded) BLAST systems.

In this work, a high-efficiency reconfigurable digital signal processor (DSP) that consists of two arithmetic logic units and a reconfigurable computation unit is designed. The design methodology for the reconfigurable computation unit is explored based on the intermediate grain framework. The proposed reconfigurable computation unit includes 8/spl times/8 array processing elements and interconnection paths where the processing element is based on two 8-bit ripple adders and simple logic gates. This reconfigurable computation unit can be configured to perform special operations such as two 16/spl times/16-bit multiplication, sixteen 32-bit addition/subtraction, one 16-bit dot product and sixteen 8-bit absolute that utilize these 64 processing elements in different connection topologies to increase their usage rates. In the benchmark analyses, the 8/spl times/8-pixel motion estimation and 8/spl times/8-pixel discrete cosine transform are realized in the proposed reconfigurable DSP, TI TMS320C64 and MorphoSys. Additionally, the comparison of computation performances and hardware costs is performed to show that the proposed reconfigurable DSP is able to achieve a higher computation performance at a low hardware cost. Therefore, the reconfigurable DSP proposed herein can achieve high-efficiency computing for various multimedia applications.
