A high-resolution accelerometer with a bulk-micromachined silicon proof mass and an interferometric position sensor was developed for measuring vibratory accelerations. The interferometer consists of interdigitated ringers that are alternately attached to the proof mass and support substrate. Illuminating the fingers with coherent light generates a series of diffracted beams. The intensity of a given beam depends on the out-of-plane separation between the proof mass fingers and support fingers. Proof masses with mechanical resonances ranging from 80 Hz to 1 kHz were fabricated with a two mask process involving two deep reactive ion etches, an oxide etch stop, and a polyimide protective layer. The structures were packaged with a laser diode and photodiode into 8.6-cm/sup 3/ acrylic housings. The 80-Hz resonant proof mass has a noise equivalent acceleration of 40 ng/rt Hz and a dynamic range of 85 dB at 40 Hz.

In this work, the instruction-level and function-level profile analyses of a MPEG-4 video encoder are performed to design a reconfigurable digital signal processor (DSP) architecture. According to the result from the instruction-level profile analysis, the proposed DSP architecture would be lined up with 5 arithmetic logic units (ALUs), 1 multiplier, and 2 load/store units. Such a line-up in the computation units would allow the proposed DSP architecture to have a better parallel processing capability and a higher hardware usage rate in realizing the MPEG-4 video encoder. The result from the function-level profile analysis reveals that the function of motion estimation requires the most computation power. Hence, the proposed DSP architecture reconfigures 4 ALUs and a multiplier to become a functional unit for high parallel processing of motion estimation. This hardware design of motion estimation is primarily dependent on the adders and multiplier of the proposed DSP architecture, plus a few control circuits to convert the computation units. Such arrangement would have less hardware cost than in conventional video processors with specialized functional units for motion estimation. Lastly benchmark analysis and comparison are done between the proposed DSP architecture and TI TMS320C64x architecture. In processing the MPEG-4 video encoder, the proposed DSP architecture is as much as 80% more efficient in computation than the TI TMS320C64x architecture.

This work describes the optimization of a signal processing front-end for a distributed speech recognition system with the goal of reducing power consumption. Two categories of source code optimizations were used, architectural and algorithmic. Architectural optimizations reduce the power consumption for a particular system, in this case, the HP Labs Smartbadge IV prototype portable system. Algorithmic optimizations are more general and involve changes in the algorithmic implementation of the source code to run faster and consume less power. A cycle accurate energy simulation shows a reduction in power usage by 83.5% with these optimizations. The optimized source code runs 34 times faster than the original code, therefore it can run at lower processor clock speeds and voltages for further reductions in power consumption. This technique, known as dynamic voltage scaling, was implemented on the Smartbadge IV hardware for an overall reduction in power usage of 89.2%.

Production videos such as news, sports and movies have a definitive structure that involves short term interaction as well as long term correlation. This structure in video can be captured by models that take into consideration the short term statistics as well as long term recurrence. We investigate the application of probabilistic models that capture this structure. The novel approach is to characterize the short term events in video by models that can account for temporal support in terms of piecewise stationary signals with transitions, These short term events can then be embedded within another temporal model that accounts for transitions between these event and thus characterizes long term history. This also leads to the detection of recurring events in video using a monolithic model. The proposed approach is an unsupervised algorithm for event detection and it can be used for summarization, similarity based matching and enhanced browsing.
