In high-speed packages, the high-frequency characteristic of the interconnection structure becomes increasingly important. In this paper, the propagation characteristics of the stripline placed on the meshed ground plane (SMEP) are determined. The effective dielectric constant and the characteristic impedance of the single SMEP are determined by utilizing the full-wave analysis. For the longitudinally periodic structure modeling of SMEP, the finite-difference time-domain method based on Floquet's theorem is used. The slow wave effect and the high impedance characteristic are observed. In addition to the single SMEP analysis, the propagation and coupling property of the coupled SMEP is also presented, which is very important in the cross-talk modeling.

To construct three dimensional models from range data, the simultaneous registration of multiple views must be accomplished. There exists a natural hierarchy between the local problem of aligning two views and the global problem of maintaining a consistent network of relative orientation and positions between views. Our paper addresses the global problem, where we compute orientation and position estimates from noisy inter-frame measurements. This is accomplished by building a graph of infer-frame relations, selecting a set of basis cycles which fully describe the graph, and distributing accumulated error about the basis cycles.

The power/ground fluctuation is known as a significant source of radiated emission. We discuss the separated functions of on-PCB and on-chip decoupling capacitors on the suppression of electromagnetic radiated emission. Due to the different ranges of parasitic inductance and the different locations of the on-chip current drivers, on-PCB and on-chip decoupling capacitors exhibit separated frequency characteristics in terms of suppression efficiency of radiation. The roles of on-PCB and on-chip decoupling capacitors are estimated by circuit simulation and a simple antenna model, and are confirmed by experiments. It is found that the on-chip decoupling capacitors are mainly effective for the suppression of radiated emission over 100 MHz frequency. Increase of the on-chip decoupling capacitance and decrease of the parasitic inductance of the package produce an improved suppression ratio at high frequency range. Combined placement and sizing of the decoupling capacitors have achieved more than 10 dB suppression of the electromagnetic radiated emission over a wide spectrum range.

This paper presents a new multi-rate estimator design for multi-rate output feedback control (MROFC) using the current state estimator. It is shown that the principle of separation works in the design of MROFC. The MROFC system is shown to be less sensitive to noise disturbances than the single-rate control system. The proposed MROFC is applied to a galvanometer servo system. Simulation and experimental results show improved settling and tracking performance over the conventional single-rate control.

In high-speed digital printed circuit board (PCB), the ground guard fence is often used to reduce the radiated emission and the crosstalk. Moreover, it is quite useful for the presence of the ground slot under the signal trace to avoid the reflection and the radiated emission. In this paper, the effects of the guard fence are studied by experimental measurement and numerical electromagnetic simulation. It is found that the ground guard fence acts efficiently as the shielding wall against the signal trace, which results in the significant reduction of the radiated emission. Also, its inherent low radiation property works well at presence of the ground slot under the signal trace.

This paper proposes a novel combined compound splitting and phrase recombination method that optimizes the composition of the speech recognition lexicon for a given domain. Data-driven compound word splitting is followed by iterative recombination of high frequency combinations. Language model perplexity and size are the criteria used to identify a balance between compound decomposition, which reduces OOV, and lexical unit recombination, which packs additional context into a fixed-size vocabulary. The method provides a basis for lexicon design for a LVCSR system on the domain of German parliamentary speeches that is to be used as the foundation of a spoken document information retrieval system. The approach achieves a 35% reduction in OOV without a prohibitively large sacrifice in recognition performance.

In video coding standards such as H.263 and MPEG4, the motion vectors are restricted to have the same accuracy for the whole video sequence. In this paper, we explore the benefits of adapting motion vector accuracy at each macroblock of the video frames. We use a Lagrange criterion to select the best motion vectors and their accuracies, and encode them using an adaptive VLC table. We implemented full-search and fast-search versions of our technique in the test model TML-1 of the emerging video coding standard H.26L. In comparison to the original TML-1, which uses fixed 1/3-pixel motion accuracy for all the macroblocks, the proposed adaptive scheme can provide significant coding gains at the cost of slightly increasing computational complexity.
