A new multiresolution algorithm for image compression based on projection pursuit neural networks is presented. High quality low bit-rate image compression is achieved first by segmenting an image into regions of different sizes based on perceptual variation in each region and then constructing a distinct code for each block by using the orthogonal projection pursuit neural networks. This algorithm allows one to adaptively construct a better approximation for each block by optimally selecting the basis functions from a universal set. The convergence is guaranteed by orthogonalizing the selected bases at each iteration. The coefficients of the approximations are obtained by back-projection with convex combinations. Our experimental results shows that at rates below 0.5 bits/ pixel, this algorithm shows excellent performance both in terms of PSNR and subjective image quality.

In this paper, we demonstrate that a window-based Gaussian mixture model can be applied in the development of a robust nonlinear filter for image restoration. Via the EM algorithm, we utilize ML estimation of the spatially-varying model parameters to achieve the desired noise suppression and detail preservation. We demonstrate that this approach is a powerful tool which gives us information about the local statistics of noisy images. We demonstrate that the estimated local statistics can be efficiently utilized for outlier detection and edge detection. The advantage of our algorithm is that it can simultaneously suppress additive Gaussian and impulsive noise, while preserving fine details and edges.

A novel approach for de-blocking of block based image and video compression algorithms is presented. In our algorithm a blocky image is first decomposed into approximation and detail subspaces with a J-level multiresolution analysis (MRA). In the next step, the low-pass approximation image and the high-pass detail images are processed independently with spatially adaptive order statistic (OS) filters. The proposed algorithm can effectively eliminate or reduce the blocking artifacts and is computationally efficient.

A learning vector quantization method based on the dynamic time warping scheme is proposed for the speech recognition. The optimized speech database and adequate time-alignment vector matching can be achieved. The recognition accuracy for different users is improved by adapting the speech database using the learning vector quantization method. An user-friendly software system of the proposed method is implemented to demonstrate the recognition of 200 voice commands. Various languages and dialects can be realized in our system with a high recognition accuracy. The evaluation board of speech recognition using an 8051 microprocessor has been designed for the industrial applications. A pipelined programmable micro-architecture of the speech recognition processor is developed for the high-performance and high-speed recognition system.

Human vision, machine vision, and image coding, all have to deal with the problem of finding representations that are useful and efficient. The best-known techniques are based on low-level processing, using signal processing concepts such as filters, transforms, and simple non-linearities. Low-level concepts are at the heart of standard vision systems for computing optic flow, texture, etc. Low-level image coding techniques include DCTs, pyramids, wavelets, etc. To advance to a new generation of image coding architectures one must work with new image representations that involve such concepts as surfaces, lighting, transparency, etc. These representations fall in the domain of "mid-level" vision. By representing images with these more sophisticated vocabularies one can increase the flexibility and efficiency of the vision and image coding systems. The authors decompose an image sequence into a set of overlapping layers, rather like the "cels" used by a traditional animator. These layers are ordered in depth, sliding over one another and being combined according to the rules of transparency and occlusion. For some test sequences the authors achieve data compression far better than is possible with standard techniques such as MPEG.< >
