Packets originated from an information source in the network can be highly correlated. These packets are often routed through different paths, and compressing them requires to process them individually. Traditional universal compression solutions would not perform well over a single packet because of the limited data available for learning the unknown source parameters. In this paper, we define a notion of correlation between information sources and characterize the average redundancy in universal compression with side information from a correlated source. We define the side information gain as the ratio between the average maximin redundancy of universal compression without side information to that with side information. We derive a lower bound on the side information gain, where we show that the presence of side information provides at least 50% traffic reduction over traditional universal compression when applied to network packet data confirming previous empirical studies. This article proposes a stochastic multilevel-state framework to model the animal’s behavior. The motivation of this article is the variety behavior influenced by several factors, which can lead to the state explosion. The proposed framework processes data from an automated sensing system and constructs the model. The data gathered from captive Antelope goral (Naemorhedusgriseus) in Chiang Mai Night Safari, Thailand. The data is gathered from the activity and the environmental factors in the cage by none invasive method. The model separated observed data into two main classes: the upper-level data and the lower-level data. The upper-level data represents the environment data such as temperature, humidity, and light density. Moreover, the landscape of the captivity area also takes into consideration. On the other hand, the lower-level represents the location of the animal of interested in the captivity area. The working strategy of this work is to cluster the each type of data and link them together by a stochastic approach. Both layers of data will be handled independently in clustering algorithm and determine probabilistic of state transaction. From the data observed from the sensor, the Probabilistic Automaton (PA) function is constructed. It is a function of producing the next stage based on the previous behavior states. The initial state of the framework is in the lower-level data (the current location of the animal). Then, the PA using the current lower stage and the current upper stage generates the next stage, location of the animal. Both the lower stage and the upper stage are traverse along the constructed automaton. The result can suggest computing methods, which can utilize to zoo research, which performs behavior monitoring, and in the other studies area, or subject of study, such as, air pollution dispersion that tracks the movement of pollutant according to the environment. The COVID-19 pandemic clearly showed how much medical and clinical students’ education relied on physical instruction and examination. The work presented here was born by the fact that medical and clinical education had to be suspended during the social distancing phase of the pandemic. This work presents the lessons learned from creating a virtual reality system (VTRACS) for educating and assessing clinical students on a limited budget. Our work showed that clinical education could be done in a virtual space with a minimal virtual reality setup and a low-cost virtual reality headset. © 2024 The Authors

The objective of this work is to present the advantages of the power regulation (active and reactive power) of a wind system in order to upgrade the quality of the produced energy to grid. In this vein, a variety of power control techniques which have been applied to the wind energy system based on the doubly fed induction generator are studied and developed. Those techniques consist of Backstepping control and Sliding Mode control. For this, a study of these controls will be detailed and validated in Matlab / Simulink environment with the simultaneous utilization of the "Pitch Control" and "Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT)" techniques. Thus, the obtained results have demonstrated the performances of the controls applied to the wind system. Equally important, they also attest that the quality of the active and reactive powers and the voltages, of the wind system is significantly improved, indeed. © 2018 IEEE.

—Visual Human Activity Recognition (HAR) and data fusion with other sensors can help us at tracking the behavior and activity of underground miners with little obstruction. Existing models, such as Single Shot Detector (SSD), trained on the Common Objects in Context (COCO) dataset is used in this paper to detect the current state of a miner, such as an injured miner vs a non-injured miner. Tensorflow is used for the abstraction layer of implementing machine learning algorithms, and although it uses Python to deal with nodes and tensors, the actual algorithms run on C++ libraries, providing a good balance between performance and speed of development. The paper further discusses evaluation methods for determining the accuracy of the machine-learning and an approach to increase the accuracy of the detected activity/state of people in a mining environment, by means of data fusion. Distributed compressive sensing (DCS) usually improves the signal recovery performance of multi-signal ensembles by exploiting both intra- and inter-signal correlation and sparsity structure. However, the existing DCS had proposed for a very limited ensemble of signals that has only single common information. This paper proposes a generalized DCS (GDCS) framework which can improve sparse signal detection performance given arbitrary types of common information, which are classified into full common information and partial common information after overcoming against existing limitation. Specifically, the theoretical bound on the required number of measurements under the GDCS is obtained. We also develop a practical algorithm to obtain benefits using the GDCS. At the end of this paper, it simply summarizes the potential security issues when it gets all sensing information in a sensor network. Finally, numerical results verify that the proposed algorithm reduces the required number of measurements for correlated sparse signal detection compared to the DCS algorithm. This research lays down the basis for efficient distributed signal detection so that it can improve the detection performance or it can detect the signal reliably when the number of signal observations is limited. Three studios of similar outer-shell dimensions, with varying acoustic treatments and absorptivity, were evaluated via both recorded and simulated binaural stimuli for 22.2- and 2-channel playback. A series of analysis, including acoustic modelling in CATT-Acoustic and subjective evaluation, was conducted to test whether the 22.2-channel playback preserved common perceptual impressions regardless of room-dependent physical characteristics. Results from multidimensional scaling (MDS) indicated that listeners used one perceptual dimension for differentiating between reproduction format, and others for physical room characteristics. Clarity and early decay time measured in the three studios illustrated a similar pattern when scaled from 2- to 22.2-channel reproduced sound fields. Subjective evaluation revealed a tendency to preserve inherent perceptual characteristics of 22.2-channel playback in spite of different playback conditions. © 2018 Audio engineering Society. Nowadays, artificial intelligence plays a very significant role in the optimal design of microwave devices such as antennas. In particular, antenna design automation via surrogate model-based optimization (SMBO) methods is attracting a lot of interest due to the efficiency improvement in terms of computational cost. The parallel surrogate model-assisted hybrid differential evolution for antenna optimisation (PSADEA) method is a state-of-the-art SMBO method. In this paper, PSADEA is used to synthesize a compact slotted monopole antenna for ultra wide band body-centric applications. The performance of PSADEA is compared with 2019 computer Simulation technology - Microwave Studio (CST-MWS) optimizers: trust region framework (TRF) and particle swarm optimisation (PSO). Results from the comparisons show that PSADEA obtains very satisfactory design solutions for the monopole antenna in all runs using an affordable optimization time in each, whereas the alternative optimizers fail to obtain a satisfactory design solution in all runs. A close agreement between the simulated and measured results for the fabricated prototype of a typical PSADEA synthesized design for the monopole antenna validates the design solution quality of PSADEA.

Principal component analysis based broadband hybrid precoding for millimeter-wave massive MIMO systems

Hybrid analog-digital precoding is challenging for broadband millimeter-wave (mmWave) massive MIMO systems, since the analog precoder is frequency-flat but the mmWave channels are frequency-selective. In this paper, we propose a principal component analysis (PCA)-based broadband hybrid precoder/combiner design, where both the fully-connected array and partially-connected subarray (including the fixed and adaptive subarrays) are investigated. Specifically, we first design the hybrid precoder/combiner for fully-connected array and fixed subarray based on PCA, whereby a low-dimensional frequency-flat precoder/combiner is acquired based on the optimal high-dimensional frequency-selective precoder/combiner. Meanwhile, the near-optimality of our proposed PCA approach is theoretically proven. Moreover, for the adaptive subarray, a low-complexity shared agglomerative hierarchical clustering algorithm is proposed to group the antennas for the further improvement of spectral efficiency (SE) performance. Besides, we theoretically prove that the proposed antenna grouping algorithm is only determined by the slow time-varying channel parameters in the large antenna limit. Simulation results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed solution over state-of-the-art schemes in SE, energy efficiency (EE), bit-error-rate performance, and the robustness to time-varying channels. Our work reveals that the EE advantage of adaptive subarray over fully-connected array is obvious for both active and passive antennas, but the EE advantage of fixed subarray only holds for passive antennas.
