Slime mould Physarum polycephalum is a single cell that is visible by the unaided eye. When spanning sources of nutrients the slime mould builds a network of protoplasmic tubes which is sometimes considered to be optimal in terms of the minimization of metabolite transportation time and distance away from repellents. Previously we have shown that the slime mould is efficient in imitating the formation of man-made road networks in major countries, where major urban areas are sources of nutrients. We used a similar approach to grow slime mould on a three-dimensional template of the Moon to speculate on potential colonisation scenarios. The slime mould imitated the propagation of colonisation in an exploratory mode, i.e. without any definite targets. Additional transportation hubs/targets were added after the initial network was formed, to imitate the development of colonies in parallel with slime mould growth. We provide analyses of proximity graphs representing colonisation networks and support the findings with Physarum-inspired algorithms to inform supply chain design. We speculate on how living Physarum, or its incorporation into a polymer hybrid material, can be used as a wearable smart wetware based on laboratory experiments interacting with chemical components.

3D Hair reconstruction based on real-life hair capture is an important and challenging work in hair modeling field. Most of existing hair capture methods use 2D images to reconstruct 3D hair, and these methods usually adopt 3D polygons to present hair wisp. In this paper, we introduce an approach to capture real-life hair using Kinect sensor and digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) camera and to reconstruct 3D hair model using particle system. First, our method collects four views of point clouds and high resolution image for real-life hair. We register DSLR image and point cloud to build the mapping relationship between 2D and 3D and the alignment techniques are utilized to merge the point clouds. With the manually extracted 2D hair strands from the DSLR image, the system used control points to represent hair strands as spline curve. Furthermore, these control points are projected on the point cloud to find the corresponding 3D control points. Finally the system reconstructs 3D hair model where the strands are represented in particle system. We also present a hidden hair pieces recovery algorithm to generate final well-connected 3D hair strands. Our method is novel and has many advantages: (i) hardware setting is simple and affordable (ii) combination of high quality image of DSLR and depth of Kinect taking advantage of each of them (Hi) the 2D and 3D combined method allows us to repair and improve the quality of 3D depth (iv) Hair representation is spline based which is a particle system and most common hair animation is based on particle system.

The paper investigates dual-link fault localization in all-optical ring networks using optical probes (called monitoring bursts). By defining a single monitoring node (MN) in the ring that initiates and terminates a set of monitoring trails (m-trails), the MN can localize any dual-link fault by inspecting the on-off status of the launched optical bursts. We investigate relevant problems in the proposed fault monitoring approach, including m-trail allocation, burst launching time scheduling, and node switch fabric configuration, where constructions are developed to derive optimal solutions and are further examined in numerical experiments. 2(|Ej| - 1) m-trails and at most (2δ + L)(|E| - 1) + δ(|E| - 2) of monitoring delay are required for dual-link fault localization from a single MN in a ring with|E| links, where δ is the burst propagation delay along a unidirectional link and L is the burst length.

Enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems implementation projects are challenging and resource consuming. There are several phases in the ERP implementation process. One of the earliest and most critical phases is the ERP selection phase. If an organization selects an inadequate ERP to fit their needs, the project will most likely destine to fail. Research and practice have provided several cases of ERP project failures because of a faulty selection process. No matter what amendments the adopting company undertakes in the later phases, if there is no fit, there is no success. This research, presents an explanatory case study, which employed a simple multi-attribute rating technique (SMART)-based ERP selection method. The selection method was mainly based on developing process maps for all the critical business processes inside the organization, and then checking the degree of compliance of the potential ERP packages with those developed process maps. In addition, other factors were also included in the ERP evaluation and selection process. As the ERP was assured to be matching the business requirements, the method and the selection factors have been proven adequate for the selection process. In addition, this minimizes the risk of a non-fitting ERP system and consequent project failures.

Spatial inputs from the auditory periphery can be changed with listener's various movements relative to the sound source. Nevertheless, humans can perceive a stable auditory environment and appropriately react to a sound source. This suggests that the inputs are reinterpreted in the brain, while being integrated with information on the movements. Little is known, however, about how these movements modulate auditory perceptual processing, especially under linearly moving environment. We investigate the effect of linearly self-motion on auditory space representation. Results of our experiments showed that the sound position judged as being located at the subjective coronal plane was displaced compared with the the listener's physical coronal plane. This distortion was observed irrespective of the style of the self-motion (active or passive). Moreover, the distortion was observed both with and without vestibular stimulation. These results suggest that self-motion information, irrespective of its origin (vestibule or any other sources), is crucial to evoke this distortion of auditory space perception.

Sustainable energy supply and demand can partially be solved by the conservation of energy, which is a personal and self-driven action. However, energy conservation currently requires the purchase of third-party products. The upfront cost of purchasing these products to monitor energy consumption in a home is a barrier that further cements the divide of those that have and those that have not. Detailed appliance power consumption reporting should be made available for free as part of the home's smart meter. Governments and power utilities must improve and expand policies that promote a socio-economic balance allowing everyone to participate in energy conservation regardless of their economic situation in a sustained way. We critically look at what economics and government polices exist and need to exist. We also demonstrate the computational means to achieve this - nonintrusive load monitoring (NILM) - and discuss how manufacturing and standards organizations need to work together to provide the essential information that describes how appliances consume energy. This paper proposes a Consumer Bill of Rights for Energy Conservation. © 2014 IEEE.

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have received significant research focus due to their widespread applicability in military, health care, agriculture, environment monitoring applications. These applications require WSNs to be self-organized and mobile. Clustering techniques are particularly important in the success of WSN implementations especially when sensor nodes are moving at different speeds. Many existing clustering algorithms assume that sensor nodes move at the same speed which is not true in many practical cases. Thus, in this paper, we introduce a velocity-based clustering algorithm and implement a relay placement technique in order to maintain seamless network connectivity. Simulation results show that the packet loss rate of the proposed algorithm is much lower than the existing LEACH and HEED clustering protocols.

The breach of privacy in encrypted instant messenger (IM) service is a serious threat to user anonymity. Performance of previous de-anonymization strategies was limited to 65%. We perform network de-anonymization by taking advantage of the cause-effect relationship between sent and received packet streams and demonstrate this approach on a data set of Yahoo! IM service traffic traces. An investigation of various measures of causality shows that IM networks can be breached with a hit rate of 99%. A KCI Causality based approach alone can provide a true positive rate of about 97%. Individual performances of Granger, Zhang and IGCI causality are limited owing to the very low SNR of packet traces and variable network delays.

The paper deals with a problem of comparing and retrieving visual data representing various clothing styles. Proposed solution joins several sophisticated computer vision methods, such as face detection using AdaBoost strategy, human body segmentation and decomposition using pictorial structures and appearance models, together with visual descriptors employing simplified dominant color descriptor. The input images do not necessary have to be taken in controlled environment, so the flexibility of the system is high. The proposed algorithm makes it possible to compare images presenting humans and retrieve images with similar clothing style. The potential application is the area of social network services, mostly recommendation web-based systems, that help people choose clothes and share with clothing ideas. Developed algorithm has been tested on 650 images gathered from various social media in the Internet and showed high accuracy rate. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2014.
