A new likelihood-based stochastic knock controller, that achieves a significantly improved regulatory response relative to conventional strategies, while also maintaining a rapid transient response is presented. Up until now it has only been evaluated using simulations and the main contribution here is the implementation and validation of the knock controller on a five cylinder engine with variable compression ratio. Furthermore, an extension of the fast response strategy and a re-tuning of the controller is shown to improve performance. The controller is validated with respect to its robustness to changes in engine operating condition as well as compression ratio. The likelihood-based controller is demonstrated in engine tests and compared to a conventional controller and it is shown that it is able to operate closer to the knock limit with less variations in control action without increasing the risk of engine damage. © 2013 IEEE.

Human Mobility Models (HMMs) have become increasingly relevant in different application domains including networks designed for data dissemination protocols. Most existing HMMs consider the temporal and spatial features of human mobility. In addition, many recent HMMs based on social networks have begun to take into account social factors, which naturally influence the results of the HMMs. Unfortunately, these mobility models do not focus on the impact of several important social factors that can affect a person's actions, such as language, citizenship, and culture. This paper introduces a hybrid human mobility model that integrates social behavior, cultural and language factors into HMMs in order to measure their effect on human mobility, as well as temporal and spatial features. Results demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed model.

Despite various proposed Medium Access Control (MAC) approaches, efficient medium access in VANET remains a significant challenge, especially for the broadcast of safety messages. A key contributing factor to packet loss is the hidden terminal problem, which is exacerbated by the high node mobility apparent in VANET. Since the hidden terminal problem is fundamentally a problem of lack of awareness, this work evaluates the effects of increased neighbor awareness at the MAC layer. An increased awareness of neighboring nodes' slot allocation in a TDMA-based MAC, directly impacts on the number of available slots. Therefore, the effects of TDMA frame size is also evaluated for different awareness ranges. To support the analysis, a TDMA-based MAC with configurable neighbor awareness and configurable TDMA frame size is used. The impact is assessed using the packet delivery ratio, receiver throughput, and end-to-end latency. The results show packet delivery ratio and receiver throughput to increase for increased awareness ranges, up to an optimal of 3 hops, after which performance worsens. An increase in TDMA frame size leads to an increase in packet delivery ratio for small awareness ranges, and an oscillating increase for large awareness ranges. The receiver throughput also initially increases for an increased TDMA frame size, but reaches an optimum, also at 3 hops.

In this study we have explored the concept of ``Cultural Robotics" for the evolution of social to cultural Robots for contemporary society. By defining the concept of culture in computing, the potential creation of a culture between humans and robots is explored. Based on the cultural values of the robots creators and learning ability of the robots, cultural attributes in this regard are in the process of being formed which would define the new concept of cultural robotics. Considering the embodiment of the robots, influence of robots in communication culture is expected. Our investigation anticipates creation of different attributes of the culture between robots and humans in the near future.

Machine to Machine (M2M) communication networks starts to achieve widespread usability in different application domains. Thus, designing energy efficient, fault tolerant and secure clustering scheme is significantly important for the M2M area networks that comprise a large number of sensors. However, to the best of our knowledge, existing secure clustering schemes for M2M communication networks do not support fault tolerance and energy efficiency together. Thus, this paper introduces an Energy efficient, fault tolerant and Secure clustering mechanism for M2M (ESM) area networks that minimizes the number of cluster heads (CHs) and active member nodes. The ESM clustering scheme includes a simple, lightweight but very effective security mechanism that uses simple permutation-based shared keys between (i) member nodes and CHs, (ii) inter-cluster gateway nodes and CHs and (iii) CHs and Machine Type Communication (MTC) gateway. Experimental results demonstrate that the ESM clustering scheme reduces network energy consumption as compared to the existing DSC and LEACH protocols. Security analysis also reveals that ESM is effective against well-known attacks such as sybil, wormhole, and black hole.

With the enormous growth of online reviews in Internet, sentiment analysis has received more and more attention in information retrieval and natural language processing community. Up to now there are very few researches conducted on sentiment analysis for Persian documents. This paper considers the problem of sentiment classification for online customer reviews in Persian language. One of the challenges of Persian language is using of a wide variety of declensional suffixes. Another common problem of Persian text is word spacing. In Persian in addition to white space as interwords space, an intra-word space called pseudo-space separates word's part. One more noticeable challenge in customer reviews in Persian language is that of utilizing many informal or colloquial words in text. In this paper we study these challenges by proposing a model for sentiment classification of Persian review documents. The proposed model is based on a lemmatization approach for Persian language and is employed Naive Bayes learning algorithm for classification. Additionally we present a new feature selection method based on the mutual information method to extract the best feature collection from the initial extracted features. Finally we evaluate the performance of the model on a manually gathered collection of cellphone reviews, where the results show the effectiveness of the proposed model.

Software birthmarks are unique and native characteristics of a binary executable program that can be used for detecting software piracy. API (Application Programming Interface) calls in an MS Windows binary executable can be used as software birthmarks when there are no source codes available to detect software similarity. However, it is inefficient to extract birthmarks from all API calls during the execution of a binary executable. In this paper, we propose an efficient scheme for comparing software similarity. To reduce the number of comparisons used in the proposed scheme, we extract only the core API calls that are explicitly used in different programs. The birthmarks used for comparing the similarity between two programs can be obtained by extracting these core API calls. Our experimental results show that this proposed birthmark scheme using core API calls is efficient for evaluating software similarity. Copyright 2013 ACM.

In this paper, a novel approach is introduced for identifying the writer of a document, with special emphasis to paleography. Towards this direction, a mathematical quantity called plane curvature is introduced and a number of associated propositions are stated. Proper similarity measures of two curves are defined and a subsequent statistical analysis is applied. The efficiency of the method has been, first, tested on a public reference database. The methodology has also been applied to the very important problem of classifying 23 Byzantine codices and 46 Ancient inscriptions to their writers, thus achieving correct dating of their content. The inscriptions have been attributed to ten individual hands and the Byzantine codices to four writers. Prominent epigraphologists and classicists fully agree with the obtained classification.
