iCAM06 is a high dynamic range (HDR) imaging technology. However, the base-detail separation, chromatic adaptation, and tone compression algorithms included in ICAM06 cause problems in image quality. This study focuses on the desaturation, poor contrast, and noise problems found in the dark regions. First, we discuss desaturation compensation using the visual acuity characteristics for various illuminant levels. The edge stop function of the bilateral filter in the iCAM06 method is adoptively modified according to the illuminant information. Second, in order to reduce the magnified noise in the dark regions due to tone compression, the shadow regions are detected by an object's intensity and illuminant level, and the noise of the detected regions is then reduced using a luminance-adaptive coring function. Finally, we confirmed that the color saturation and image contrast are enhanced and the noise reduced for dark objects through the use of the proposed methods.

The modulating functions method has been used for the identification of linear and nonlinear systems. In this paper, we generalize this method to the on-line identification of fractional order systems based on the Riemann-Liouville fractional derivatives. First, a new fractional integration by parts formula involving the fractional derivative of a modulating function is given. Then, we apply this formula to a fractional order system, for which the fractional derivatives of the input and the output can be transferred into the ones of the modulating functions. By choosing a set of modulating functions, a linear system of algebraic equations is obtained. Hence, the unknown parameters of a fractional order system can be estimated by solving a linear system. Using this method, we do not need any initial values which are usually unknown and not equal to zero. Also we do not need to estimate the fractional derivatives of noisy output. Moreover, it is shown that the proposed estimators are robust against high frequency sinusoidal noises and the ones due to a class of stochastic processes. Finally, the efficiency and the stability of the proposed method is confirmed by some numerical simulations.

In this article, we propose a robust method to compute the output of a fractional linear system defined through a linear fractional differential equation (FDE) with time-varying coefficients, where the input can be noisy. We firstly introduce an estimator of the fractional derivative of an unknown signal, which is defined by an integral formula obtained by calculating the fractional derivative of a truncated Jacobi polynomial series expansion. We then approximate the FDE by applying to each fractional derivative this formal algebraic integral estimator. Consequently, the fractional derivatives of the solution are applied on the used Jacobi polynomials and then we need to identify the unknown coefficients of the truncated series expansion of the solution. Modulating functions method is used to estimate these coefficients by solving a linear system issued from the approximated FDE and some initial conditions. A numerical result is given to confirm the reliability of the proposed method.

Digital photos are estimated to be generated and uploaded to social image websites (e.g. Flickr) in the amount of 375 petabytes annually [Tueld et al.], and plenty of these photos are annotated with the creation time/date in EXIF information. Among these photos, a large number of images are geo-tagged (e.g. GPS and landmark names) to indicate where the photo was taken. Moreover, several public databases composed of pictures captured by live cameras at various locations are available on the internet . Therefore, it has become a crucial task to enable an intuitive and efficient way for users to browse large-scale photos in space and time. Conventional photo browsing applications, e.g. ACDSee and Picasa, display photos one by one according to alphabetical or temporal order. To enrich the user's browsing experience, numerous multimedia systems, such as Photo Story, Tiling Slideshow, Auto- Collage, and IS-Scrapbook, have been developed to organize photos based on various photo metadata, including time information, visual contents, and typographical design principles. Aiming at creating a browsing style with a realistic feel, Photo Navigator is proposed to reveal the spatial relations among photos and offer a strong sense of space by taking users to fly into the scenes [Hsieh et al.]. Instead of regarding the system users as passive content receivers, Google Street View and Photo Tourism [Snavely et al.] allow the users to interact with the systems and actively determine the browsing path based on the built spatial relations among photos by the techniques of image stitching and 3D reconstruction. Recent advances in camera architectures and associated mathematical representations now enable compressive acquisition of images and videos at low data-rates. In such a setting, we consider the problem of human activity recognition, which is an important inference problem in many security and surveillance applications. We propose a framework for understanding human activities as a non-linear dynamical system, and propose a robust, generalizable feature that can be extracted directly from the compressed measurements without reconstructing the original video frames. The proposed feature is termed recurrence texture and is motivated from recurrence analysis of non-linear dynamical systems. We show that it is possible to obtain discriminative features directly from the compressed stream and show its utility in recognition of activities at very low data rates.

The paper investigates a novel monitoring trail (m-trail) scenario that can enable any shared protection scheme for achieving all-optical and ultra-fast failure restoration. Given a set of working (W-LPs) and protection (P-LPs) lightpaths, we firstly define the neighborhood of a node, which is a set of links whose failure states should be known to the node in restoration of the corresponding W-LPs. A set of m-trails is routed such that each node can localize any failure in its neighborhood according to the ON-OFF status of the traversing m-trails. Bound analysis is performed on the minimum bandwidth required for the m-trails. Extensive simulation is conducted to verify the proposed scheme.
