This paper uses a 2D systems setting, based on the control theory for repetitive processes, to design an iterative learning control law with particular emphasis on the commonly encountered problem of maintaining a specified rotational speed of shaft where disturbances introduce irregularities in the speed achieved. The two motors system is a model for this problem and is used as the basis for a simulation study of the performance of the final design.

In this study, parallel connection of separate voltage sources has been realized using cuk converters. For this aim, output voltages of converters are measured continuously and then fixed to a reference value. The PWM signals which are required to control the converters and to sense the current and voltage signals are generated by an FPGA. Since the FPGA has parallel processing feature, voltage and current data of the system are measured at the same time. Thus, the converters are connected in parallel punctually and load sharing between them are provided in order to eliminate some undesired cases like unbalanced loading. In the system realized, two identical cuk converters are used. As cuk converters can operate both in buck and boost modes, output voltages are fixed to the reference voltage successfully, even though input voltages are low or high. Experimental results show that the system achieved operates with a reasonable efficiency ranging from 81% to 88%.

The conventional design of home security systems typically monitors only the property and lacks physical control aspects of the house itself. Also, the term security is not well defined because there is a time delay between the alarm system going on and actual arrival of the security personnel. This paper discusses the development of a home security and monitoring system that works where the traditional security systems that are mainly concerned about curbing burglary and gathering evidence against trespassing fail. The paper presents the design and implementation details of this new home control and security system based on field programmable gate array (FPGA) The user here can interact directly with the system through a web-based interface over the Internet, while home appliances like air conditioners, lights, door locks and gates are remotely controlled through a user-friendly web page. An additional feature that enhances the security aspect of the system is its capability of monitoring entry points such as doors and windows so that in the event any breach, an alerting email message is sent to the home owner instantly.

Nowadays, there are several difficulties are met in the selection of appropriate conditions, place of use, and purpose of photovoltaic (PV) systems. The reason is that electrical power output of PV system shows a non-linear variation, unlike other applications, depending on the internal resistance of electrical devices (loads) as well as radiation intensity and environmental temperature. Therefore, electrical characteristics of PV panel-load must be evaluated together for correct optimization. In this study, running an electrical device having optimized curve of linear load on a monthly basis of a panel was analyzed. At the same time, surface temperature of the panel, panel inclination angle and value of the load that concerning electrical load impact on power output of PV panels was examined experimentally and theoretically.

On Intrinsically Live Structure of a Class of Generalized Petri Nets Modeling FMS

The deadlock control and liveness-enforcement are mostly implemented based on siphons in most existing work using structural theory. Our previous work has revealed a kind of intrinsically live structures in a class of generalized Petri nets called systems of simple sequential processes with weighted resources allocation (WS 3 PR). The liveness-enforcement is achieved by analyzing the structure including weight information and reconfiguring the initial marking of resource places without considering the initial token counts in idle process places. This work extends it to a more general class than WS 3 PR. Instead of siphons, a new concept of structural objects is defined to carry weight information and reflect the circular waits of resources. The numerical relationship between initial markings of resource places and weights of arcs is investigated to yield an intrinsically live structure-based liveness-enforcing method that requires no external monitors. The work provides an insight into structures of generalized Petri nets and a new revenue to achieve the desired deadlock control. Several examples are used to illustrate the proposed method.

Graphene-enabled wireless communications constitute a novel paradigm which has been proposed to implement wireless communications at the nanoscale. Indeed, graphene-based nano-antennas just a few micrometers in size have been predicted to radiate electromagnetic waves at the terahertz band. In this work, the performance of a graphene-based nano-patch antenna in transmission and reception is numerically analyzed. The resonance frequency of the nano-antenna is calculated as a function of its length and width, both analytically and by simulation. The influence of a dielectric substrate with a variable size, and the position of the patch with respect to the substrate is also evaluated. Finally, the radiation pattern of a graphene-based nano-patch antenna is compared to that of an equivalent metallic antenna. These results will prove useful for designers of future graphene-based nano-antennas, which will enable wireless communications at the nanoscale.

Recently, handheld devices with sound functionality are popular. A problem encountered by using such devices is sound leakage due to inappropriate volume setting, which should be reduced not to disturb people other than the user. In this paper, we present an active control (ANC) technique to control such sound leakage in handheld devices. The least squares (LS) optimum control under various positions of error sensors is investigated. Based on the results, desirable and feasible microphone-loudspeaker setups are suggested. Later, simulations are conducted with microphones mounted on the cellular phone mockup. Test results indicate that the unwanted sound leakage can be effectively reduced by more than 6 dB for all directions in the frequency range up to 2 kHz.

Survivable routing serves as a key role in connection-oriented communication networks for achieving desired service availability for each connection. This is particularly critical for the success of all-optical mesh networks where each lightpath carries a huge amount of data. Currently, 1 + 1 dedicated path protection appears to be the most widely deployed network resilience mechanism because it offers instantaneous recovery from network failures. However, 1 + 1 protection consumes almost twice as much capacity as required, which imposes a stringent constraint on network resource utilization. In addition, finding an SRLG-disjoint path is essential for 1 + 1 protection, which is nonetheless subject to non-trivial computation complexity and may fail in some SRLG scenarios. To address these problems, we introduce a novel framework of 1 + 1 protection, called Generalized Dedicated Protection (GDP), for achieving instantaneous recovery from any SRLG failure event. It is demonstrated, that finding a non-bifurcated optimal solution for GDP is NP-complete. Thus, the paper presents a novel scheme applying Generalized Dedicated Protection and Network Coding (GDP-NC) to ensure both optimal resource utilization among dedicated protection approaches and instantaneous recovery for single unicast flows, which can be split into multiple parts in all-optical networks. We demonstrate that the proposed GDP-NC survivable routing problem is polynomial-time solvable, owing to the ability to bifurcate flows. This flexibility comes at the expense of additional hardware for linear combination operations for the optical flows.

In this paper, we consider the Précis problem of sampling K representative yet diverse data points from a large dataset. This problem arises frequently in applications such as video and document summarization, exploratory data analysis, and pre-filtering. We formulate a general theory which encompasses not just traditional techniques devised for vector spaces, but also non-Euclidean manifolds, thereby enabling these techniques to shapes, human activities, textures and many other image and video based datasets. We propose intrinsic manifold measures for measuring the quality of a selection of points with respect to their representative power, and their diversity. We then propose efficient algorithms to optimize the cost function using a novel annealing-based iterative alternation algorithm. The proposed formulation is applicable to manifolds of known geometry as well as to manifolds whose geometry needs to be estimated from samples. Experimental results show the strength and generality of the proposed approach.
