This paper gives insight into the system design and hardware architecture of Nancy, which is a social robot in humanoid form that is currently being developed in Social Robotics Lab (SRL), Interactive and Digital media Institute, National University of Singapore. In contrast to industrial robots, the design of Nancy focuses on safety issue, social interaction and attractive appearance. In order to achieve these objectives, Nancy is designed to be user-friendly and approachable. The mechanical structure of Nancy is presented in the beginning. After that, the hardware architecture which includes processor system, vision system, audio system, communication system, power system, and motion system, is described systematically. Finally, the roles of integrated sensors are described and implemented works are summarized. © 2011 IEEE.

People's willingness to share where they are, what they are doing and with whom using location-based technology has led to the emergence of applications which are being used to create new ways to represent and navigate space. One of the most popular applications in this area is Foursquare. In this paper we report the results of a short ethnographic study of the use of Foursquare in East London, combined with further analysis using the developer site to acquire data in order to investigate findings further. We describe how the Foursquare community appropriates the relatively simple communication capabilities of the application to develop their own informal rules of interaction. This behaviour is important to both application designers and businesses using social networking sites to reach and engage with consumers. Specifically we argue that tips are used for more than the intended purpose of commenting on a venue and that mayorships are a vehicle for cheating the leaderboard. We conclude by noting that designing functions to fulfill a specific purpose in media space offers no guarantee that the community will use them solely for the intended purpose. © 2011 IEEE.

In-packet Bloom filters are recently proposed as a possible building block of future Internet architectures replacing IP or MPLS addressing that solves efficient multicast routing, security and other functions in a stateless manner. In such frameworks a bloom filter is placed in the header which stores the addresses of the destination nodes or the traversed links. In contrast to the standard Bloom filter, the length of the in-packet Bloom filter must be highly adaptive to the number of stored elements to achieve low communication overhead. In this paper we propose a novel type of Bloom filter called Adaptive Bloom filter, which can adapt its length to the number of elements to be represented with a very fine granularity. The novel filter can significantly reduce the header size for in-packet bloom filter architecture, by eliminating the wasting effect experienced in existing block-based approaches which rely on concatenating several standard Bloom filters. Nevertheless, it requires slightly more calculations when adding and removing elements. © 2011 IEEE.

In this paper we present the effect of the hand-grip and the presence of the human body on received signal strength measurements when performing positioning of mass market devices in indoor environments. We demonstrate that the mitigation of both human body and hand-grip influence can enhance the positioning accuracy and that the human factor cannot be neglected in experimental activities with real mobile devices. © 2011 IEEE.

Monitoring trail (m-trail) provides an efficient way to achieve fast and unambiguous link failure localization in all-optical networks. To remove the electronic alarm dissemination, the original m-trail concept has been extended to allow trail status checking at each on-trail node by tapping the supervisory optical signal. By properly allocating such extended m-trails, each monitoring node can ail-optically localize every link failure using its locally collected optical alarm signals. This not only speeds up failure localization, but also minimizes monitoring resources by sharing supervisory wavelength-links among different monitoring nodes. However, the existing ILP design is very time-consuming and could hardly reach optimality. In this paper, we propose an efficient greedy algorithm to allocate the (extended) m-trails and minimize the total wavelength cost Our heuristic is based on a novel "Min Wavelength Max Information" principle which quantifies the contribution of each m-trail on failure localization, and a set of advanced techniques (such as trail-splitting and trail-sharing, etc) to intelligently allocate m-trails. Simulation results substantially attest the superior efficiency and performance of the algorithm in terms of minimizing the total wavelength cost, the required number of m-trails, and the algorithm running time. © 2011 IFIP.

作者： John Maeda Steven Heller Tim Hoover Has been a design partner at Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers since January 2014 helping entrepreneurs and portfolio companies to build design into their company cultures. He served as the president of Rhode Island School of Design for six years through 2013 and also served as an associate director of research at the MIT Media Lab. Maeda has been a practicing designer since 1990 and his work is in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Cartier Foundation. He serves on the boards of several corporations including Sonos and Wieden + Kennedy and is chair of eBay's Design Advisory Board. His four published books include The Laws of Simplicity and Redesigning Leadership. Maeda is the recipient of a variety of international awards for his creative work including induction into the Art Director's Club Hall of Fame. In 2001 he received the White House National Design Award in 2002 he received the Mainichi Design Prize in Japan and in 2005 he was awarded the Raymond Loewy Foundation Prize in Germany. Maeda earned a BS and an MS from MIT in computer science and electrical engineering. He received a PhD in design science from the University of Tsukuba Institute of Art and Design in Japan as well as an MBA from Arizona State University. Co‐chair and co‐founder of the MFA Designer as Author and Entrepreneur program at the School of Visual Arts in New York. He was the art director of The New York Times Book Review and now writes the VISUALS column for the NYTBR. He also writes “The Daily Heller” at *** a weekly online design column for Atlantic magazine. He is author co‐author and editor of more than 165 books on the history and practice of graphic design illustration and satiric art. His forthcoming books include 100 Classic Graphic Design Magazines (Laurence King Publishers) and Raw Data: The Process Behind Information Graphics (Thames + Hudson). In this paper, we consider the Precis problem of sampling K representative yet diverse data points from a large dataset. This problem arises frequently in applications such as video and document summarization, exploratory data analysis, and pre-filtering. We formulate a general theory which encompasses not just traditional techniques devised for vector spaces, but also non-Euclidean manifolds, thereby enabling these techniques to shapes, human activities, textures and many other image and video based datasets. We propose intrinsic manifold measures for measuring the quality of a selection of points with respect to their representative power, and their diversity. We then propose efficient algorithms to optimize the cost function using a novel annealing-based iterative alternation algorithm. The proposed formulation is applicable to manifolds of known geometry as well as to manifolds whose geometry needs to be estimated from samples. Experimental results show the strength and generality of the proposed approach.

This paper presents the study, design, fabrication, and measurement of a vertically polarized compact biconical antenna that can be used as a reference antenna. The study from simulation results suggest that the optimal antenna shall have the flare angle of 60 which gave the most stable vertical beamwidth in the broadside direction and the fewest ripples in the main beam region, a cone length of one wavelength of center frequency (7 GHz) to make the antenna most compact, and the feed gap was 0.5 mm. The return loss was 10 dB on average across the bandwidth. The simulation results were validated by the experiments. The fabricated antennas worked across 2-12 GHz as desired, and were used as reference antennas especially for UWB 3.1-10.6 GHz applications. © 2011 IEEE.
