Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) rupture is believed to occur when the mechanical stress acting on the wall exceeds the strength of the wall tissue. In endovascular aneurysm repair, a stent-graft in a catheter is released at the aneurysm site to form a new blood vessel and protect the weakened AAA wall from the pulsatile pressure and, hence, possible rupture. In this paper, we propose a framework to estimate the wall stress distribution of non-stented/stented AAA based on fluid-structure interaction, which is utilized in a surgical simulation system (IRAS). The 3D geometric model of AAA is reconstructed from computed tomography angiographic (CTA) images. Based on our experiments, a combined logarithm and polynomial strain energy equation is applied to model the elastic properties of arterial wall. The blood flow is modeled as laminar, incompressible, and non-Newtonian flow by applying Navier-Stokes equation. The obtained pressure of blood flow is applied as load on the AAA meshes with and without stent-graft and the wall stress distribution is calculated by fluid-structure interaction (FSI) solver equipped in ANSYS. Experiments demonstrate that our analytical results are consistent with clinical observations. © 2011 IEEE.

With advances in low-power and low-cost wireless and sensor technologies, using WSNs in eHealthCare system has yielded tremendous efforts in recent years. However, most of previous researches adopt a remote server to process large scale of health sensor data forwarded by gateways that allow for interconnecting WSNs to IP network. In this paper, we present a prototype of a smart 6LoWPAN border router aimed to locally make decisions of health states using a Hidden Markov Model and enable wireless E-health care sensor network to seamlessly connect with IP network.

The wind power based energy generation technologies are intensively studied in renewable energy generation issues since last century. The main demands directed to a renewable energy source are being reliable, sustainable and low-cost. Several studies are performed to increase the efficiency of an installed wind power plants. The preliminary analyses such as geographical structures, climate conditions, and land topography should be also considered during feasibility analyses of a wind plant. Although the obtained data could be processed by using numerical or various estimation methods, the data mining techniques provide more accurate results among others. In this study, the agglomerative hierarchical clustering tool is designed and is capable to process any data set supplied by expert to system. The case study is performed using monthly average wind speed data of Central Anatolia Region of Turkey in the paper. It is observed that the developed tool clusters the given sample data set in an efficient and successful way. © 2011 IEEE.

Monitoring trail (m-trail) provides an efficient way to achieve fast and unambiguous failure localization (UFL) in all-optical networks. To remove electronic alarm dissemination, the extended m-trail concept allows trail status checking at each on-trail node. Each monitoring node can localize any failure using its locally available on-off status of the traversing m-trails. In this paper, we introduce a novel algorithm to unambiguously localize any SRLG failure locally at any MN. The proposed algorithm is characterized by a signalling-free alarm collection mechanism which can completely be realized in the optical domain. We will show that in the course of minimizing the number of m-trails, the consumed monitoring resources in terms of cover length can also be effectively reduced. Simulation is conducted to verify the proposed algorithm with respect to the number of m-trails, resource consumption, and running time.

This paper gives insight into the system design and hardware architecture of Nancy, which is a social robot in humanoid form that is currently being developed in Social Robotics Lab (SRL), Interactive and Digital media Institute, National University of Singapore. In contrast to industrial robots, the design of Nancy focuses on safety issue, social interaction and attractive appearance. In order to achieve these objectives, Nancy is designed to be user-friendly and approachable. The mechanical structure of Nancy is presented in the beginning. After that, the hardware architecture which includes processor system, vision system, audio system, communication system, power system, and motion system, is described systematically. Finally, the roles of integrated sensors are described and implemented works are summarized.

Survivable routing serves as an important issue in core optical mesh networks. Operators are mainly interested in the protection of single link failures and a set of multiple link failures with high failure probability. In order to consider failure dependencies among links, Shared Risk Link Groups (SRLG) are defined in the network. Against a given set of SRLG failures the connection needs to be resilient to fulfill the required quality of service (QoS) level. Currently, 1+1 dedicated path protection is reported to be the most widely deployed network resilience mechanism because it offers instantaneous recovery from network failures. However, 1+1 protection in most cases unable to provide SRLG-disjoint paths, thus, it is not resilient against all SRLG failures under consideration. In this paper, a novel Bacterial Evolutionary Algorithm for the Integer (or non-bifurcated) Generalized Dedicated Protection (IGDP) is introduced to protect each SRLG in the operator's list. The proposed evolutionary algorithm aims to minimize the amount of reserved spare bandwidth. As a result, the solution is resilient against all failures in the SRLG list while the simplicity of 1+1 protection in signaling and switching is maintained. Extensive simulation is conducted to compare our evolutionary approach with previously reported optimal and heuristic solutions for the IGDP problem, by which its merits are further demonstrated.

This paper considers the problem of out-of-band failure localization in all-optical mesh networks using bidirectional monitoring trails (bm-trails) for localizing any shared risk link group (SRLG) failure. We firstly prove NP-completeness for the problem of unambiguous failure localization (UFL) under the considered SRLG failure scenario with the minimum number of bm-trails. Next, a necessary and sufficient condition is provided for the feasibility of the formulated problem, which further serves as the foundation of the proposed heuristic, namely Link Code Construction (LCC). Extensive simulation is conducted on hundreds of randomly generated planar topologies to verify the proposed approach and compare it with some previously reported counterparts in terms of the number of required bm-trails and the computational efficiency.

In the future, robots will use various robot H/W platforms and their services will be composed of S/W components. Accordingly, it needs a robot S/W platform that provides standardized components and interfaces for fast robot development. OPRoS (Open Software Platform for Robotics Services) is a robot S/W platform that provides standardized components and interfaces. It uses the UPnP (Universal Plug and Play) as communication middleware. In the UPnP protocol, a UPnP control point finds and connects to a UPnP device using the name of the UPnP device. Thus, this mechanism can cause a problem in the multi-SBC or ubiquitous computing environments. Because most robots or ubiquitous computing environments may have components of similar name such as arm, actuator and sensor, a UPnP control point can not distinguish a right one from other components of the same name in this case. In this paper, we define the discovery configuration XML file and propose a component connection mechanism using IP based permission assignment to solve the problem.

Monitoring trail (m-trail) provides an efficient way to achieve fast and unambiguous link failure localization in all-optical networks. To remove the electronic alarm dissemination, the original m-trail concept has been extended to allow trail status checking at each on-trail node by tapping the supervisory optical signal. By properly allocating such extended m-trails, each monitoring node can ail-optically localize every link failure using its locally collected optical alarm signals. This not only speeds up failure localization, but also minimizes monitoring resources by sharing supervisory wavelength-links among different monitoring nodes. However, the existing ILP design is very time-consuming and could hardly reach optimality. In this paper, we propose an efficient greedy algorithm to allocate the (extended) m-trails and minimize the total wavelength cost Our heuristic is based on a novel “Min Wavelength Max Information” principle which quantifies the contribution of each m-trail on failure localization, and a set of advanced techniques (such as trail-splitting and trail-sharing, etc) to intelligently allocate m-trails. Simulation results substantially attest the superior efficiency and performance of the algorithm in terms of minimizing the total wavelength cost, the required number of m-trails, and the algorithm running time.

This paper presents the study, design, fabrication, and measurement of a vertically polarized compact biconical antenna that can be used as a reference antenna. The study from simulation results suggest that the optimal antenna shall have the flare angle of 60° which gave the most stable vertical beamwidth in the broadside direction and the fewest ripples in the main beam region, a cone length of one wavelength of center frequency (7 GHz) to make the antenna most compact, and the feed gap was 0.5 mm. The return loss was -10 dB on average across the bandwidth. The simulation results were validated by the experiments. The fabricated antennas worked across 2-12 GHz as desired, and were used as reference antennas especially for UWB 3.1-10.6 GHz applications.
