We present the Multimodal Music Stand (MMMS) for the untethered sensing of performance gestures and the interactive control of music. Using e-field sensing, audio analysis, and computer vision, the MMMS captures a performer's continuous expressive gestures and robustly identifies discrete cues in a musical performance. Continuous and discrete gestures are sent to an interactive music system featuring custom designed software that performs real-time spectral transformation of audio.

We define the research fields of experiential signal processing (ESP) and experiential telecommunications (ET), which are concerned with sensing, communicating, and presenting an Environment, Event, or Experience at a distance. We develop our vision of ESP and ET and describe key components and research fields. We highlight the challenges of presenting multichannel, multimedia information and present an example for panoramic video using the Allosphere, a 3-story sphere housed in an anechoic chamber, that has been constructed at UCSB.

As a combination of time and frequency modeling,sparse atomic representation provides a means for effective and interesting time-frequency modifications of signals. A drawback is the intensive computation required to find the representation. New tools however greatly speed the process and facilitate experimentation with real signals. We have experimented with the modification of audio signals, specifically pitch-shifting, using sparse atomic approximations found by the matching pursuit algorithm. A na ve approach,where phase is not taken into account, produces surprisingly good results for signals having soft or no *** artifact sounding like amplitude modulation appears however, which we show can be reduced by a phase optimization algorithm. Finally we discuss a more sophisticated approach to time-frequency modifications in general using atomic representations. © 2006 ACM.

Voice is the preferred method of human communication. Although there have been times when it seemed that the voice communications problem was solved, such as when the PSTN was our primary network or later when digital cellular networks reached maturity, such is not the case today. This paper addresses the challenges and opportunities starting from the basic issues in speech coder design, developing the important speech coding techniques and standards, discussing current and future applications, outlining techniques for evaluating speech coder performance, and identifying research directions. The most prominent speech coding standards are presented and their properties, such as performance, complexity, and coding delay, analyzed. Particular networks and applications for each standard are included. Further, reflecting upon the issues and developments high-lighted in this paper, it becomes evident that there is a diverse set of challenges and opportunities for research and innovation in speech coding and voice communications. © 2005 IEEE.

Effectively teaching introductory media signal processing (MSP) to students requires a means of communicating complex concepts without advanced mathematics. At the media arts and technology program at UCSB we are teaching graduate media arts students concepts of MSP. These students, while interested in learning how their digital tools work, have an incredibly tough time working through the material the way traditional engineering students do. To address this we have used MATLAB to build a comprehensive suite of exploratory demonstrations and applications tailored to illustrate sophisticated concepts, and to inspire students that may not possess a strong background in mathematics. Our application, "Signals and Systems Using MATLAB" (SSUM), is presented here, and its use in a course designed to teach MSP to media arts students is discussed. Its usefulness extends beyond media arts to engineering and computer science curriculum. SSUM can be obtained for free from http://***/***. © 2005 IEEE.

A hybrid HMM/DPA adaptive gesture recognition method

We present a hybrid classification method applicable to gesture recognition. The method combines elements of Hidden Markov Models (HMM) and various Dynamic programming Alignment (DPA) methods, such as edit distance, sequence alignment, and dynamic time warping. As opposed to existing approaches which treat HMM and DPA as either competing or complementing methods, we provide a common framework which allows us to combine ideas from both HMM and DPA research. The combined approach takes on the robustness and effectiveness of HMMs and the simplicity of DPA approaches. We have implemented and successfully tested the proposed algorithm on various gesture data. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.

We investigate the issues in voice communications over tandem heterogeneous network connections which require multiple source decoding/encoding operations. While it is known from speech coding research that tandem connections of different speech coders can extract a substantial performance penalty, it is shown that the use of error concealment and source re-encoding can improve system performance in the presence of channel impairments such as bit errors and packet losses. A new protocol is proposed for wireless LANs that reduces retransmissions and discarded packets, and hence reduces system delay and facilitates packet loss concealment.

In MEMO systems, where multiple antennas are used at both transmitter and receiver to achieve high spectral efficiency, channel impulse reponses are often assumed to be constant over a block or packet This assumption of block stationarity on channels is valid for most fixed wireless scenarios. However, for communications in a high mobility environment, the assumption will result in considerable performance degradation. In this paper, we focus on channel estimation for a MIMO system with OFDM transmission technique. In our system, pilots are placed on NP subcarriers for a novel channel estimation at the receiver with Kalman filters. With the channels estimated by a Kalman filter, we apply the QRD-M algorithm for suboptimal data detection with reasonable computational cost The outputs of data detection are fed back to another Kalman filter for an improved channel estimation. By alternatively and iteratively using these two Kalman filters, a better channel estimation can be obtained. A simulation result of the bit error rate shows the improvement of 10 dB in SNR with four iterations over non-iteration.

In this paper, we propose an algorithm for robust 3D motion estimation of wide baseline cameras from noisy feature correspondences. The posterior probability density function of the camera motion parameters is represented by weighted samples. The algorithm employs a hierarchy coarse-to-fine strategy. First, a coarse prior distribution of camera motion parameters is estimated using the random sample consensus scheme (RANSAC). Based on this estimate, a refined posterior distribution of camera motion parameters can then be obtained through importance sampling. Experimental results using both synthetic and real image sequences indicate the efficacy of the proposed algorithm. ©2004 IEEE.
