With advancements in the science of detection and attribution studies, the influence of climate change over many events has now been quantified. Because of the rapidly increasing temperatures, vulnerable populations (adults older than 65 years, and children younger than one year of age) were exposed to 3·7 billion more heatwave days in 2021 than annually in 1986–2005 (indicator 1.1.2), and heat-related deaths increased by 68% between 2000–04 and 2017–21 (indicator 1.1.5), a death toll that was significantly exacerbated by the confluence of the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the local cooling and overall health benefits of urban greenspaces, only 277 (27%) of 1038 global urban centres were at least moderately green in 2021 (indicator 2.2.3), and the number of households with air conditioning increased by 66% from 2000 to 2020, a maladaptive response that worsens the energy crisis and further increases urban heat, air pollution, and greenhouse gas emissions. Playing an instrument is a physical skill learned through observation, repetition and rehearsal. Students of orchestral instruments seek one-to-one tuition from expert musicians. However as they become more accomplished, the number of suitable tutors becomes more concentrated, especially for less common instruments. Often a tutor-student relationship develops over several years and temporary separation due to overseas performing, auditioning and teaching commitments is problematic. Some music education organisations use video conferencing as a solution to these problems, however it has long been recognised that interaction mediated by video conferencing is not analogous to a co-present experience. In this paper, ethnographic video analysis is used to study the interactions in co-present and separated instrumental music lessons. We find that the musical score represents more than a physical embodiment of the music - it plays an important role in coordinating activity and interaction. In video mediated lessons a single physical score can no longer be shared and interaction is changed as a result. © CogSci *** rights reserved.

There is an increasing desire to remain connected when physically distant and computer-mediated communication (CMC) is one means of satisfying this desire. In particular, there is a growing trend for individuals to use commercially available technology to connect with friends and family in social and leisure settings. Drawing on this trend, performative arts and existing telecommunications research, we identify the social practice of sharing a meal together as ripe for reinterpretation within CMC. We explore the opportunities to design a technology platform that supports remote guests in experiencing togetherness and playfulness within the practices of a traditional dinner party. Through both visual and aural channels as well as remote agency, the dinner guests were able to share a holistic telematic dining experience comparable to a traditional co-presence dinner. Based on the findings, we propose that one must consider the social structure and cultural background of users to inform the design of a technological intervention. © 2012 ACM.

People's willingness to share where they are, what they are doing and with whom using location-based technology has led to the emergence of applications which are being used to create new ways to represent and navigate space. One of the most popular applications in this area is Foursquare. In this paper we report the results of a short ethnographic study of the use of Foursquare in East London, combined with further analysis using the developer site to acquire data in order to investigate findings further. We describe how the Foursquare community appropriates the relatively simple communication capabilities of the application to develop their own informal rules of interaction. This behaviour is important to both application designers and businesses using social networking sites to reach and engage with consumers. Specifically we argue that tips are used for more than the intended purpose of commenting on a venue and that mayorships are a vehicle for cheating the leaderboard. We conclude by noting that designing functions to fulfill a specific purpose in media space offers no guarantee that the community will use them solely for the intended purpose. © 2011 IEEE.

In this paper, we propose the necessary steps in implementing strong WLAN security for companies using our visual security assessment framework for wireless information assurance. Through real case studies on the organisations with various security measures and by showing complete execution paths of our framework, we suggest the importance of continual assessment of the WLAN for strong corporate security assurance using our Corporate WLAN Security Assessment Framework.
