The research of metamaterial is one of most important global activity that promises to change the lives in many different ways. Flexibly controlling the properties of metamaterials by tunable designs makes metamaterials more colorful and thus enables a family of new electromagnetic devices. In this paper, the use of ferrites on design of tunable metamaterials has been reviewed. Owing to the novel properties of ferrites, including broadband negative permeability and tunability of permeability, a great many researchers have focused on investigating ferrites based metamaterials and the relevant applications. This paper reviews the design, theoretical analysis, numerical and experimental demonstrations, and the potential applications of the ferrite based metamaterials.

This paper describes in vitro cytotoxicity of bismuth nanoparticles revealed by three complementary assays (MTT,G6PD, and calceinAM/EthD-1). The results showthat bismuth nanoparticles are more toxic than most previously reported bismuth compounds. Concentration dependent cytotoxicities have been observed for bismuth nanoparticles and surface modified bismuth nanoparticles. The bismuth nanoparticles are non-toxic at concentration of 0.5 nM. Nanoparticles at high concentration (50 nM) kill 45, 52, 41, 34 % HeLa cells for bare nanoparticles, amine terminated bismuth nanoparticles, silica coated bismuth nanoparticles, and polyethylene glycol (PEG) modified bismuth nanoparticles, respectively;which indicates cytotoxicity in terms of cell viability is in the descending order of amine terminated bismuth nanoparticles, bare bismuth nanoparticles, silica coated bismuth nanoparticles, and PEG modified bismuth nanoparticles. HeLa cells are more susceptible to toxicity from bismuth nanoparticles than MG-63 cells. The simultaneous use of three toxicity assays provides information on how nanoparticles interact with cells. Silica coated bismuth nanoparticles can damage cellular membrane yet keep mitochondria less influenced;while amine terminated bismuth nanoparticles can affect the metabolic functions of cells. The findings have important implications for caution of nanoparticle exposure and evaluating toxicity of bismuth nanoparticles. © Springer science+Business Media, LLC 2012.

We present a tunable triple-band μ-negative metamaterial composed of loop resonator and ferrite. The tunable triple-band-stop transmission spectrum of such metamaterial is investigated numerically by full wave simulations. Moreover, the corresponding effective parameters are retrieved to illustrate the tunable μ-negative characteristic.

Quantitative Trait Locus (QTL) analysis is a statistical technique that allows understanding of the relationship between plant genotypes and the resultant continuous phenotypes in non-constant environments. This requires generation and processing of large datasets, which makes analysis challenging and slow. One approach, which is the subject of this paper, is Partitioned Linear Modeling (PLM), lends itself well to parallelization, both by MPI between nodes and by GPU within nodes. Large input datasets make this parallelization on the GPU non-trivial. This paper compares several candidate integrated MPI/GPU parallel implementations of PLM on a cluster of GPUs for varied data sets. We compare them to a naive implementation and show that while that implementation is quite efficient on small data sets, when the data set is large, data-transfer overhead dominates an all-GPU implementation of PLM. We show that an MPI implementation that selectively uses the GPU for a relative minority of the code performs best and results in a 64 improvement over the MPI/CPU version. As a first implementation of PLM on GPUs, our work serves as a reminder that different GPU implementations are needed, depending on the size of the working set, and that data intensive applications are not necessarily trivially parallelizable with GPUs.

In harsh operational conditions, machines lose components on a frequent basis, causing a significant footprint to the surrounding environment. This affects operational up-time, safety measures and cost effectiveness. This paper proposes the use of an integrated RFID-WSN architecture to reduce the footprint of mining equipment used in the Canadian Oil Sands industry. Sensors and RFID tags provide both identification and positioning data for detecting broken parts from Ground Engaging Tools (GETs), such as huge shovel teeth. A delay-tolerant delivery approach utilizes mobile couriers, placed on loading trucks available in the vicinity, to store and carry data from readers and relays to remote base-stations. Delivering data in such harsh mining environments poses several challenges including power scarcity, vast transmission distances and the lack of an accessible communication infrastructure. We provide a use case to demonstrate how this architecture successfully overcomes these challenges within the harsh industrial environment of the Oil Sands.

The future power grid is expected to further expand with highly distributed energy sources and smart loads. The increased size and complexity lead to increased burden on existing computational resources in energy control centers. Thus the need to perform real-time assessment on such systems entails efficient means to distribute centralized functions such as state estimation in the power system. In this paper, we present our experience of prototyping a system architecture that connects distributed state estimators individually running parallel programs to solve non-linear estimation procedure. Through our experience, we highlight the needs of integrating the distributed state estimation algorithm with efficient partition and data communication tools so that distributed state estimation has low overhead compared to the centralized solution. We build a test case based on the IEEE 118 bus system and partition the state estimation of the whole system model to available HPC clusters. The measurement from the test bed demonstrates the low overhead of our solution.

Miniaturised ultrasound transducer arrays with integrated electronics will in future enable significant advances in high resolution medical imaging and in acoustic tweezing for bioscience research. However, their development has been limited by challenges in scaling down conventional piezoelectric ultrasound transducer fabrication and interconnection techniques. Piezoelectric thin film transducers on silicon substrates can overcome these challenges by reducing dimensional constraints in fabrication and facilitating integration with electronics, including allowing low drive voltages in transmission. We present the design, fabrication and testing of diaphragm transducers to evaluate the feasibility of integrated piezoelectric micromachined ultrasonic transducers (PMUTs). Transducers have been designed, then fabricated with 80 μm and 130 μm diameter diaphragms, the latter in arrays with ～500 diaphragms. Receive measurements demonstrate functionality of both devices, with pulse-echo bandwidths of approximately 90% for the 80 μm diaphragms, demonstrating initial feasibility for ultrasound imaging.

In a number of types of documents, ranging from forms to archive documents and books with annotations, machine printed and handwritten text may be present in the same document image, giving rise to significant issues within a digitisation and recognition pipeline. It is therefore necessary to separate the two types of text before applying different recognition methodologies to each. In this paper, a new approach is proposed which strives towards identifying and separating handwritten from machine printed text using the Bag of Visual Words paradigm (BoVW). Initially, blocks of interest are detected in the document image. For each block, a descriptor is calculated based on the BoVW. The final characterization of the blocks as Handwritten, Machine Printed or Noise is made by a Support Vector Machine classifier. The promising performance of the proposed approach is shown by using a consistent evaluation methodology which couples meaningful measures along with a new dataset.

Photonic crystals realized in LiNbO 3 have a great potential to reduce the size and increase the functionality of integrated optical devices. In order to accomplish these aims, fabrication know-how must be mastered yet it remains relatively uncharted. In this work we report the fabrication and optical characterization of photonic crystal structures in annealed proton exchanged (APE) LiNbO 3 waveguides. In our work, channel waveguides were fabricated by photolithography patterning followed by immersing LiNbO 3 wafers in molten benzoic acid at 235°C for 5 h. The thickness and the composition profiles of the APE waveguides were measured using the secondary ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS) method. The experimental characterization of the photonic crystal waveguides was performed and a photonic stop band with good sharpness can be observed from the transmission spectra.
