Lattice Boltzmann algorihms are a mesoscopic representation of nonlinear continuum physics (like Navier-Stokes, magnetohydro dynamics (MHD), Gross- Pitaevskii equations) which are ideal for parallel supercomputers because they transform the difficult nonlinear convective macroscopic derivatives into purely local moments of distribution functions. The macroscopic nonlinearities are recovered by relaxation distribution functions in the collision operator whose dependence on the macroscopic velocity is algebraically nonlinear and thus purely local. Unlike standard computational fluid dynamics codes, there is no loss in parallelization in handling arbitrary geometric boundaries, e.g., using bounce-back rules from kinetic theory. By encoding detailed balance into the collision operator through the introduction of discrete H-function, the lattice Boltzmann algorithm can be made unconditionally stable for arbitrary high Reynolds numbers. It is shown that this approach is a special case of a quantum lattice Boltzmann algorithm that entangles local qubits through unitary collision operators and which is ideally parallelized on quantum computer architectures. Here we consider turbulence simulations using 2,048 PEs on a 1,6003-spatial grid. A connection is found between the rate of change of enstrophy and the onset of laminar-to- turbulent flows.

This paper presents a highly efficient and accurate link-quality measurement framework, called EAR (Efficient and Accurate link-quality monitoR), for multi-hop wireless mesh networks, that has several salient features. First, it exploits three complementary measurement schemes: passive, cooperative, and active monitoring. EAR maximizes the measurement accuracy by (i) dynamically and adaptively adopting one of these schemes and (ii) opportunistically exploiting the unicast application traffic present in the network, while minimizing the measurement overhead. Second, EAR effectively identifies the existence of wireless link asymmetry by measuring the quality of each link in both directions of the link, thus improving the utilization of network capacity by up to 114%. Finally, its reliance on both the network layer and the IEEE 802.11-based device driver solutions makes EAR easily deployable in existing multi-hop wireless mesh networks without system recompilation or MAC firmware modification. EAR has been evaluated extensively via both n.s-2-based simulation and experimentation on our Linux-based implementation. Both simulation and experimentation results have shown EAR to provide highly accurate link-quality measurements with minimum overhead. Copyright 2006 ACM.

This paper addresses the underlying sources of performance degradation (e.g. latency, overhead, and starvation) and the difficulties of programmer productivity (e.g. explicit locality management and scheduling, performance tuning, fragmented memory, and synchronous global barriers) to dramatically enhance the broad effectiveness of parallel processing for high end computing. We are developing a hierarchical threaded virtual machine (HTVM) that defines a dynamic, multithreaded execution model and programming model, providing an architecture abstraction for EEC system software and tools development. We are working on a prototype language, LITL-X (pronounced "little-X") for Latency Intrinsic-Tolerant Language, which provides the application programmers with a powerful set of semantic constructs to organize parallel computations in a way that hides/manages latency and limits the effects of overhead. This is quite different from locality management, although the intent of both strategies is to minimize the effect of latency on the efficiency of computation. We will work on a dynamic compilation and runtime model to achieve efficient LITL-X program execution. Several adaptive optimizations will be studied. A methodology of incorporating domain-specific knowledge in program optimization will be studied. Finally, we plan to implement our method in an experimental testbed for a HEC architecture and perform a qualitative and quantitative evaluation on selected applications. © 2006 IEEE.

The performance of V-BLAST symbol detection can be seriously degraded if channel information is not perfect. We derive a new nulling matrix at the receiver using the modified TLS (total least squares) solution under channel uncertainties. Using the new nulling matrix, we propose a modified vertical Bell laboratories layered space-time (V-BLAST) detection algorithm to reduce unexpected effects due to channel uncertainties. The proposed algorithm requires only one more scalar value, an upper bound on the 2-induced norm of a channel error matrix, which is relatively robust to the statistical changes of the channel environment, than the conventional algorithm does, but the performance is better especially at high SNR. We simulate the proposed algorithm in the presence of receiver's mobility

The proposed algorithm requires only one more scalar value, the maximal norm of a channel error matrix, than the conventional algorithm does, but the performance is better especially at the high SNR. We simulate the proposed algorithm under correlated MIMO channels with Gaussian channel coefficients.

Volume imaging, defibrillation electrode models, and finite element modeling are employed in patient-specific procedural modeling in pediatric patients with cardiac arrhythmias. Due to variable size and anatomy, these patients may not be well-served by devices designed for adult defibrillation. A pipeline for rapid creation of image based models that can be interactively interrogated to determine optimal defibrillation scenarios and preliminary proof-of-concept work are presented. This approach has potential clinical applications for therapy planning and broad applications for finite element modeling in anatomical models. Clinical studies investigating the effects of body size, habitus, and anatomical variation on myocardial voltage gradients are planned. © 2006 IEEE.

In this paper, design principles and application of a thin and flexible intravascular top hat monopole probe with increased signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and improved longitudinal and radial coverage are described and compared with the conventional monopole probe. The top hat probe is constructed by removing a segment of the shield of a coaxial cable. A flexible thin copper foil in contact with the inner conductor of the cable is added to the end section of the cable. The copper foil acts as an antenna top hat load increasing the uniformity of the current distribution on the probe and establishes a uniform region of SNR distribution around the probe. Improvement of the SNR distribution of the top hat probe relative to the conventional monopole probe is evaluated using quantitative indices. Experimental results show that for the top hat probe, the ratio of the maximum image SNR to its relative standard deviation (SR) is 2.73 times higher than that of a conventional probe. © 2006 IOP Publishing Ltd.

The MPI-IO standard creates a huge opportunity to break out of the traditional file system I/O methods. As a software layer between the user and the file system, an MPI-IO library can potentially optimize I/O on behalf of the user with little to no user intervention. This is all possible because of the rich data description and communication infrastructure MPI-2 offers. Powerful data descriptions and some of the other desirable features of MPI-2, however, make MPI-IO challenging to implement. By creating a new collective I/O implementation that allows developers to easily tinker and play with new optimizations or combinations of different techniques, research can proceed faster and be quickly and reliably deployed

Distributed computing systems are a viable and less expensive alternative to parallel computers. However, concurrent programming methods in distributed systems have not been studied as extensively as for parallel computers. Some of the main research issues are how to deal with scheduling and load balancing of such a system, which may consist of heterogeneous computers. In the past, a variety of dynamic scheduling schemes suitable for parallel loops (with independent iterations) on heterogeneous computer clusters have been obtained and studied. However, no study of dynamic schemes for loops with iteration dependencies has been reported so far. In this work we study the problem of scheduling loops with iteration dependencies for heterogeneous (dedicated and non-dedicated) clusters. The presence of iteration dependencies incurs an extra degree of difficulty and makes the development of such schemes quite a challenge. We extend three well known dynamic schemes (CSS, TSS and DTSS) by introducing synchronization points at certain intervals so that processors compute in pipelined fashion. Our scheme is called dynamic multi-phase scheduling (DMPS) and we apply it to loops with iteration dependencies. We implemented our new scheme on a network of heterogeneous computers and studied its performance. Through extensive testing on two real-life applications (the heat equation and the Floyd-Steinberg algorithm), we show that the proposed method is efficient for parallelizing nested loops with dependencies on heterogeneous systems.
