Many control systems have large, infinite state space that can not be easily abstracted. One method to analyse and verify these systems is reachability analysis. It is frequently used for air traffic control and power plants. Because of lack of complete information about the environment or unpredicted changes, the stochastic approach is a viable alternative. In this paper, different ways of introducing rechability under uncertainty are presented. A new concept of stochastic bisimulation is introduced and its connection with the reachability analysis is established. The work is mainly motivated by safety critical situations in air traffic control (like collision detection and avoidance) and formal tools are based on stochastic analysis.

Multiagent systems (MAS) can be employed to solve a great many problems. When combined with an organization model, a MAS becomes an even more useful structure capable of taking on problems that require self-organization, adaptation, and recovery. To capture and understand the concept of organization and reorganization, we must define organization transition. Specifically, we describe a formal process of organization transition.

A distributed, real time, collaborative visualization (DRCV) system for four dimensional datasets like fMRI images, can be a valuable tool to support scientific and medical research. Software applications supporting DRCV are lagging due to complex challenges, such as real time rendering, coordinated, real time navigation, dataset management, data location transparency, heterogeneous node management, data replication policies, and so on. In addition, people using DRCV tools are tightened to computing devices with specific configuration, which lower opportunities for remote visualization collaborations. We present a novel middleware to facilitate development of DRCV applications which guarantee high data availability and scalability in terns of collaborative groups and members, and are adaptable to computing devices with varying display capabilities. We also show our prototype implementation of this middleware with performance measurements.

On the field of battle, a continual flow of information is necessary to achieve information superiority. The required information potentially originates from numerous information producers. Unfortunately, due to dynamic and often dangerous conditions, these information producers can be incapacitated or destroyed. To be successful, a battlefield information system must provide a continuous flow of information and thus adaptability and fault tolerance are key features. In this paper, we show how we build adaptive and fault tolerance information systems using an organizational model. We introduce our organizational model and provide details pertaining to its use in the development of a battlefield information system.

This paper proposes a model for caching database data in mobile ad-hoc networks through caching the queries and their responses. The approach makes a distinction between the queries and their responses and caches them on separate mobile nodes. This method is driven by the fact that queries do not become invalid unless when the design of the database entities changes while data changes depending on the application that feeds information into the database. The architecture we use is hierarchical and employs three types of designated nodes: a query directory (QD), service manager (SM), and caching node (CN). The one or more QDs are responsible for caching the queries and are assigned and supervised by the SM that also oversees the mobility activities and the availability of nodes in the network and makes "managerial" decisions accordingly, including appointing backup nodes. With this model, any node that joins the ad hoc network will either contribute services to other nodes (willingness to become an SM, a QD, or a CN) or consume services offered by other nodes. This model attempts to coordinate the query executing and query caching mechanisms in a seamless manner while maintaining minimal communication among nodes. We present preliminary results of a model that was simulated using the NS-2 software and show the viability of the proposed approach.

We investigate preconditioned iterative solutions of large dense complex valued matrices arising from discretizing the hybrid integral equations of electromagnetic scattering. Due to the specific data pattern, we propose to construct two-level (TL) preconditioners to treat the conducting and dielectric parts more efficiently. The main purpose of this study is to show that the TL preconditioning is effective with the MLFMA and can reduce the number of Krylov iterations substantially by using subdivided domain of the near part matrix for each level. Our experimental results indicate that the TL preconditioning maintains the computational complexity of the MLFMA, but converges much faster, thus effectively reduces the overall simulation time for the coated material objects.

We describe a generic programming model to design collective communications on SMP clusters. The programming model utilizes shared memory for collective communications and overlapping inter-node/intra-node communications, both of which are normally platform specific approaches. Several collective communications are designed based on this model and tested on three SMP clusters of different configurations. The results show that the developed collective communications can, with proper tuning, provide significant performance improvements over existing generic implementations. For example, when broadcasting an 8 MB message our implementations outperform the vendor's MPl/spl ***/Bcast by 35% on an IBM SP system, 51% on a G4 cluster, and 63% on an Intel cluster, the latter two using MPICH's MPl/spl ***/Bcast. With all-gather operations using 8 MB messages, our implementation outperform the vendor's MPI/spl ***/Allgather by 75% on the IBM SP, 60% on the Intel cluster, and 48% on the G4 cluster.

the IEEE 802.11e standard has been introduced recently for providing quality of service (QoS) capabilities in the emerging wireless local area networks. This standard introduces a contention window based enhanced distributed channel access (EDCA) technique that provides a prioritized traffic to guarantee the minimum bandwidth needed for time critical applications. However, the EDCA technique resets statically the contention window of the mobile station after each successful transmission. This static behavior does not adapt to the network state hence reduces the network usage and results in bad performance and poor link utilization whenever the demand for link utilization increases. This paper proposes a new adaptive differentiation technique for IEEE 802.11e wireless local area networks that takes into account the network state before resetting the contention window. The performance of the proposed technique is evaluated compared to the original differentiation techniques of the IEEE 802.11a and IEEE 802.11e standards. Preliminary results show that the proposed adaptive technique enhances the channel utilization and increases throughput.

The popularity of Web services demands data storage over the network. iSCSI is a newly emerging protocol with the goal of deploying storage over the mature TCP/IP in an economic and convenient way. In a typical Web service using iSCSI storage systems, I/O requests issued by Web users can be satisfied by different parties, such as client cache, proxy cache, Web server cache, iSCSI target cache, and disks, along the I/O path from Web clients to iSCSI storage. Understanding the characteristics of I/O traffic under such environment is increasingly important as the networked storage prevails. This paper profiles I/O for Web services using iSCSI storage systems and identifies how these I/O requests are distributed and satisfied. Both simulation and benchmarking results show that the I/O profiling is helpful to identify I/O performance bottleneck of Web services and helps to improve iSCSI performance.

The tutorial presents state-of-the-art visualization techniques inspired by traditional technical and medical illustrations. Such techniques exploit the perception of the human visual system and provide effective visual abstractions to make the visualization clearly understandable. Visual emphasis and abstraction has been used for expressive presentation from prehistoric paintings to nowadays scientific and medical illustrations. Many of the expressive techniques used in art are adopted in computer graphics, and are denoted as illustrative or non-photorealistic rendering. Different stroke techniques, or brush properties express a particular level of abstraction. Feature emphasis or feature suppression is achieved by combining different abstraction levels in illustrative rendering. Challenges in visualization research are very large data visualization as well as multi-dimensional data visualization. To effectively convey the most important visual information there is a significant need for visual abstraction. For less relevant information the dedicated image space is reduced to enhance more prominent features. The discussed techniques in the context of scientific visualization are based on iso-surfaces and volume rendering. Apart from visual abstraction, i.e., illustrative representation, the visibility of prominent features can be achieved by illustrative visualization techniques such as cut-away views or ghosted views. The structures that occlude the most prominent information are suppressed in order to clearly see more interesting parts. A different smart way to provide information on the data is using exploded views or other types of deformation. Furthermore intuitive feature classification via 3D painting and manipulation with the classified data including label placement is presented. Discussed non-photorealistic and illustrative techniques from visualization and graphics are shown from the perspective as tools for illustrators from medicine, botany, archeology
