Modern HPC applications produce increasingly large amounts of data, which limits the performance of current extreme-scale systems. Lossy compression, helps to mitigate this issue by decreasing the size of data generated by these applications. SZ, a current state-of-the-art lossy compressor, is able to achieve high compression ratios, but its prediction/quantization methods contain RAW dependencies that prevent parallelizing this step of the compression. Recent work proposes a parallel dual prediction/quantization algorithm for GPUs which removes these dependencies. However, some HPC systems and applications do not use GPUs, and could still benefit from the fine-grained parallelism of this method. Using the dual-quantization technique, we implement and optimize a SIMD vectorized CPU version of SZ (vecSZ), and create a heuristic for selecting the optimal block size and vector length. We propose a novel block padding algorithm to decrease the number of unpredictable values along compression block borders and find it reduces the number of prediction outliers by up to 100%. We measure performance of our vecSZ against an CPU version of SZ using dual-quantization, pSZ, as well as SZ-1.4. Using real-world scientific datasets, we evaluate vecSZ on the Intel Skylake and AMD Rome architectures. vecSZ results in up to 32% improvement in rate-distortion and up to 15× speedup over SZ-1.4, achieving a prediction and quantization bandwidth in excess of 3.4 GB/s.

Low latency inference has many applications in edge machine learning. In this paper, we present a run-time configurable convolutional neural network (CNN) inference ASIC design for low-latency edge machine learning. By implementing a 5-stage pipelined CNN inference model in a 3D ASIC technology, we demonstrate that the model distributed on two dies utilizing face-to-face (F2F) 3D integration achieves superior performance. Our experimental results show that the design based on 3D integration achieves 43% better energy-delay product when compared to the traditional 2D technology.

Audio-visual active speaker detection (AV-ASD) aims to identify which visible face is speaking in a scene with one or more persons. Most existing AV-ASD methods prioritize capturing speech-lip correspondence. However, there is a noticeable gap in addressing the challenges from real-world AV-ASD scenarios. Due to the presence of low-quality noisy videos in such cases, AV-ASD systems without a selective listening ability are short of effectively filtering out disruptive voice components from mixed audio inputs. In this paper, we propose a Multi-modal Speaker Extraction-to-Detection framework named ‘MuSED’, which is pre-trained with audio-visual target speaker extraction to learn the denoising ability, then it is fine-tuned with the AV-ASD task. Meanwhile, to better capture the multi-modal information and deal with real-world problems such as missing modality, MuSED is modelled on the time domain directly and integrates the multi-modal plus-and-minus augmentation strategy. Our experiments demonstrate that MuSED substantially outperforms the state-of-the-art AV-ASD methods and achieves 95.6% mAP on the AVA-ActiveSpeaker dataset, 98.3% AP on the ASW dataset, and 97.9% F1 on the Columbia AV-ASD dataset, respectively. The global increase in life expectancy poses challenges related to the safety and well-being of the elderly population, especially in relation to falls. While falls can lead to significant cognitive impairments, timely intervention can mitigate their adverse effects. In this context, the need for non-invasive, efficient monitoring systems becomes paramount. Although wearable sensors have gained traction for monitoring health activities, they may cause discomfort during prolonged use, especially for the elderly. To address this issue, we present an intelligent, non-invasive Software-Defined Radio Frequency (SDRF) sensing system, tailored red for monitoring elderly people's falls during routine activities. Harnessing the power of deep learning and machine learning, our system processes the Wireless Channel State Information (WCSI) generated during regular and fall activities. By employing sophisticated signal processing techniques, the system captures unique patterns that distinguish falls from normal activities. In addition, we use statistical features to streamline data processing, thereby optimizing the computational efficiency of the system. Our experiments, conducted for a typical home environment while using treadmill, demonstrate the robustness of the system. The results show high classification accuracies of 92.5%, 95.1%, and 99.8% for three Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithms. Notably, the SDRF-based approach offers flexibility, cost-effectiveness, and adaptability through software modifications, circumventing the need for hardware overhaul. This research attempts to bridge the gap in RF-based sensing for elderly fall monitoring, providing a solution that combines the benefits of non-invasiveness with the precision of deep learning and machine learning.

The growing incorporation of renewable energy sources into hybrid energy networks requires creative ways to maintain voltage stability. This work investigates using reinforcement learning (RL) algorithms to autonomously regulate voltage levels in hybrid energy systems that include solar, wind, and traditional power sources. It presents an innovative RL-based controller that dynamically modulates the output of distributed energy resources (DERs) in response to variable load demands and generation fluctuations. This research addresses voltage fluctuations in hybrid energy networks using RL. The proposed RL-based system improves voltage stability, flexibility, and efficiency, outperforming traditional techniques in both simulations and practical applications. The RL agent uses real-time data to learn optimum control techniques to reduce voltage variances successfully. The efficacy of the proposed system is assessed by simulations on a benchmark microgrid model, revealing substantial improvements in voltage regulation and system resilience relative to traditional control approaches. The results demonstrate that the RL-based method improves voltage stability and optimizes overall energy utilization efficiency within the grid. It emphasizes the possibility of incorporating AI-driven solutions in managing hybrid energy systems, facilitating the development of more sustainable and dependable energy infrastructures.

Audio-visual target speaker extraction (AV-TSE) aims to extract the specific person’s speech from the audio mixture given auxiliary visual cues. Previous methods usually search for the target voice through speech-lip synchronization. However, this strategy mainly focuses on the existence of target speech, while ignoring the variations of the noise characteristics, i.e., interference speaker and the background noise. That may result in extracting noisy signals from the incorrect sound source in challenging acoustic situations. To this end, we propose a novel selective auditory attention mechanism, which can suppress interference speakers and non-speech signals to avoid incorrect speaker extraction. By estimating and utilizing the undesired noisy signal through this mechanism, we design an AV-TSE framework named Subtraction-and-ExtrAction network (SEANet) to suppress the noisy signals. We conduct abundant experiments by re-implementing three popular AV-TSE methods as the baselines and involving nine metrics for evaluation. In this paper, we propose a contact-free wheat moisture monitoring system, termed Wi-Wheat+, to address the several limitations of the existing grain moisture detection technologies, such as time-consuming process, expensive equipment, low accuracy, and difficulty in real-time monitoring. The proposed system is based on Commodity WiFi and is easy to deploy. Leveraging WiFi CSI data, this paper proposes a feature extraction method based on multi-scale and multi-channel entropy. The feasibility and stability of the system are validated through experiments in both Line-Of-Sight (LOS) and Non-Line-Of-Sight (NLOS) scenarios, where ten types of wheat moisture content are tested using multi-class Support Vector Machine (SVM). Compared with the Wi-Wheat system proposed in our prior work, Wi-Wheat+ has higher efficiency, requiring only a simple training process, and can sense more wheat moisture content levels. © 2022 Chongqing University of Posts and Telecommunications

In this paper, the performance optimization of federated learning (FL), when deployed over a realistic wireless multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication system with digital modulation and over-the-air computation (AirComp) is studied. In particular, a MIMO system is considered in which edge devices transmit their local FL models (trained using their locally collected data) to a parameter server (PS) using beamforming to maximize the number of devices scheduled for transmission. The PS, acting as a central controller, generates a global FL model using the received local FL models and broadcasts it back to all devices. Due to the limited bandwidth in a wireless network, AirComp is adopted to enable efficient wireless data aggregation. However, fading of wireless channels can produce aggregate distortions in an AirComp-based FL scheme. To tackle this challenge, we propose a modified federated averaging (FedAvg) algorithm that combines digital modulation with AirComp to mitigate wireless fading while ensuring the communication efficiency. This is achieved by a joint transmit and receive beamforming design, which is formulated as an optimization problem to dynamically adjust the beamforming matrices based on current FL model parameters so as to minimize the transmitting error and ensure the FL performance. To achieve this goal, we first analytically characterize how the beamforming matrices affect the performance of the FedAvg in different iterations. Based on this relationship, an artificial neural network (ANN) is used to estimate the local FL models of all devices and adjust the beamforming matrices at the PS for future model transmission. Ultrahigh field (UHF) Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) offers an elevated signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), enabling exceptionally high spatial resolution that benefits both clinical diagnostics and advanced research. How- ever, the jump to higher fields introduces complications, particularly transmit radiofrequency (RF) field (B+1 ) inhomogeneities, manifesting as uneven flip angles and image intensity irregularities. These artifacts can degrade image quality and impede broader clinical adoption. Traditional RF shimming methods, such as Magnitude Least Squares (MLS) optimization, effectively mitigate B+1 inhomogeneity but remain time-consuming and typically require the patient’s presence to compute solutions. Recent machine learning approaches, including RF Shim Prediction by Iteratively Projected Ridge Regression and other deep learning architectures, suggest alternative pathways. Although these approaches show promise, challenges such as extensive training periods, limited network complexity, and practical data requirements persist. In this paper, we introduce a holistic learning-based framework called Fast-RF-Shimming, which achieves a 5000× speed-up in RF shimming compared to traditional MLS optimization methods. In the initial phase, we employ random-initialized Adaptive Moment Estimation (Adam) to derive the desired reference shimming weights from multi-channel B+1 fields. Next, we train a Residual Network (ResNet) to map B+1 fields directly to the ultimate RF shimming outputs, incorporating the confidence parameter into its loss function. Finally, we design Non-uniformity Field Detector (NFD), an optional post-processing step, to ensure the extreme non-uniform outcomes are identified. By leveraging a residual learning paradigm, our approach circumvents the need for pre-computed reference solutions in the testing phase and remarkably reduces computational overhead. An important goal in quantum key distribution (QKD) is the task of providing a finite-size security proof without the assumption of collective attacks. For prepare-and-measure QKD, one approach for obtaining such proofs is the generalized entropy accumulation theorem (GEAT), but thus far it has only been applied to study a small selection of protocols. In this work, we present techniques for applying the GEAT in finite-size analysis of generic prepare-and-measure protocols, with a focus on decoy-state protocols. In particular, we present an improved approach for computing entropy bounds for decoy-state protocols, which has the dual benefits of providing tighter bounds than previous approaches (even asymptotically) and being compatible with methods for computing min-tradeoff functions in the GEAT. Furthermore, we develop methods to incorporate some improvements to the finite-size terms in the GEAT, and implement techniques to automatically optimize the min-tradeoff function.
